November 19, 2015 Press Release Jamia Millia Islamia and University of Kashmir sign MoU for running a PG Course on Kashmir and South Asia Studies Jamia Millia Islamia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Kashmir for running M.A. Programme in Kashmir and South Asia Studies. The course will be spread over two years comprising four semesters. The academic session for this Postgraduate programme will commence in July each year following the national academic calendar. Each semester will have 4 courses of 4 credits each totaling 16 credits per semester, with the fourth semester having a dissertation paper, also of 4 credits. This makes a total of 64 credits for the Master’s degree. The 1st and 3rd semesters will be taught, evaluated/graded at the University of Kashmir, Srinagar. The 2nd and 4th semesters will be taught and evaluated/graded at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. The syllabus for the 1st and 3rd semesters for the said Master’s programme will be designed by the University of Kashmir. Jamia Millia Islamia, besides designing core courses, will provide a list of optional courses in related disciplines to be offered at the 2nd and 4th semesters under its Choice Based Credit Transfer System. The theme of the dissertation and nomination of supervisor will be finalized for each student before the end of the second semester. The dissertation will be submitted and evaluated before the end of the fourth semester. Jamia Millia Islamia and University of Kashmir will formalize a mutually agreed admission procedure, including a joint entrance examination to be conducted simultaneously in Srinagar and New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. K.I. Andrabi, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir said that MoU between the two universities was an outcome of out-of-the-box thinking done by the universities for academic advancement. He felt that the mutual support that existed between the two universities would take the programme forward with an active participation of South Asia Foundation. Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, JMI said that the real beneficiaries of the MoU would be the students who would have access to expertise in both universities. He hoped that Jamia would be able to develop teaching modules and provide top-quality human resources. There could also be co-supervision of Ph.D. research under the rubric of the MoU. He felt that the Meta University model that exists with between Jamia Millia Islamia and Delhi University would help to take this academic cooperation forward. Prof. Gull Mohammad Wani, Director, UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Institute, University of Kashmir observed that the SAARC students who had pursued the programme had benefited immensely and were gainfully employed. Ms. Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, a former member of the Planning Commission and former Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, felt that the signing of MoU between JMI and University of Kashmir with the help of SAF was a milestone in terms of creating greater awareness about Kashmir and South Asia. Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyer, Chairman, South Asia Foundation hoped that SAF will work as a catalyst for promoting international understanding and cohesion amongst the SAARC countries. Prof. Veena Sikri who earlier headed the Bangladesh Studies Programme at the Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia and an active member of South Asia Foundation gave a perspective on the academic cooperation between the two universities which was the first of its kind in respect of UGC-Dual Degree Programme implementation. Earlier, Prof. Mujtaba Khan, Director, Human Resource Development Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia welcomed the guests and observed that it was a historic moment for both the universities to enter into an academic collaboration for teaching and research.
