Effects of Overexposure (acute and chronic) Inhalation: Lung: Soluble barium compounds may cause irritation of the nose, throat and bronchi. In contact with moisture, this material can be corrosive and irritate mucous membranes. Long term exposure to barium compounds have been reported to cause a benign pneumoconiosis (baritosis). Dermal/Eye Contact: Other (specify): Ingestion causes severe gastroenteritis. Systemic effects include muscle paralysis, slow heart rate, ringing in the ears, and dizziness. This compound may be irritating and corrosive to moist skin. (LD50 orat rat - 150 mg/kg)
