However, the lack of knowledge among the local communities about the reptiles may accelerate the decline of its population. To overcome the problem, community-based conservation is a valuable tool to educate and carry out sustainable conservation programs. In this study, the knowledge and awareness of a local community in Mukim Bota, Perak,were accessedusing a questionnaire. This study found that members of the local community in Mukim Bota werewell awareof the existence of river terrapins in their county, with 56% of 397 respondents replying in the affirmative. A total of 62% of respondents knew that sandbanks were the nesting habitats for river terrapins and 70% noticed that the landings and population were decreasing every year.This study strengthened the theory that a knowledgeable and participative community could produce better outcomein sustaining a terrapin conservation programme. Approach: Two PCR- based methods, Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus-PCR (ERIC-PCR) and restriction analysis of the Internal Transcribed Spacer and 5.8S regions (ITS+5.8S regions) were used to characterize Fusarium Oxysporum F. sp. Cubense (FOC) isolates from different banana cultivars. The genetic relationship of the FOC isolates were analyzed using Un-weighted Pair-Group Method with Arithmetic Averages (UPGMA) cluster analysis based on Jaccard Similarity Coefficient. Results: Restriction patterns of the ITS+5.8S regions using nine restriction enzymes namely, Alu I, Eco RI, Eco 88I, Bsu RI, Bsu 15I, Hin fI, Hin 6I, Msp I and Taq I and ERIC-PCR showed low variation among the FOC isolates studied, indicating close relationship among the isolates. Un- weighted Pair-group Method with Arithmetic Averages (UPGMA) cluster analysis based on Jaccard Similarity Coefficient showed that the FOC isolates were grouped into two main clusters with similarity value of 41.4-100% in PCR-RFLP of ITS + 5.8S and 45-100% similarity based on ERIC- PCR analysis, respectively.

This study was conducted to solve the problem of looking for the graveyards’ location by using ICT applications. This paper also discusses the application and procedure for mapping of the point of the graveyards’ coordinates for the tomb sites which were visited during the conduct of this study. The findings of this study will help the heirs of the Sultanate of Perak, the local authorities and the public to find and access the late Sultans of Perak’s graveyards easily and systematically. Overwhelming rainfall was noted as one of the main factors causing such impact, which was claimed to be unprecedented to some extent. The state of Perak, which is blessed with four cascading dams had also experienced flood damage at a scale that was considered the worst in history. The rainfall received had caused the dam to reach danger level that necessitated additional discharge to be released. Safety of the dams was of great importance and such unavoidable additional discharge was allowed to avoid catastrophic failure of the dam structures. This paper discusses the dam pre-release as a significant dam management strategy in reducing flood impact. An important balance between required dam storage to be maintained and the risk element that can be afforded is the crucial factor in such enhanced operation strategy. While further possibility in developing a carefully engineered dam pre-release strategy can be explored for dam operation in Malaysia, this has already been introduced in some developed countries. Australia and South Africa are examples where pre-release has been practiced and proven to reduce flood risk.

Good interpretation enhances our understanding, appreciation, and therefore, provides protection of cultural heritage. This research has two aims; 1) to identify the cultural heritage significance; 2) to designate interpretation plan of the potential cultural heritage for new tourist attraction in the state of Perak. The method of this research involved three steps; inventory of resources, focus group survey and interpretation proposal. Results from focus group indicate the need to customize the interpretation and presentation of rural heritage especially on physical experience in community cultural activities. This study also highlights the most significance cultural resources in Perak Tengah Districts based on ranking. This research, basically exploring on how Rumah Kutai is being constructed from the beginning until the end. Also, to examine the construction techniques especially on the jointing system (tanggam) of several components in Rumah Kutai. Phillips and SIL International® All rights reserved Abstract The Semai language of peninsular Malaysia is rich in diversity: each Semai village speaks its own variety. This report1,2 documents the various Semai dialects and explores the relationships between them, with regard to choice of words as well as the phonological changes that affect the pronunciation of each. Systematic analysis shows the dialects to be different enough from each other that it is unlikely that any one dialect can be adequately understood by all speakers. Thus, in the strictest sense of the terms, it may be argued that the Semai varieties are a cluster of closely related “languages” rather than “dialects.” Following local convention, however, the term “dialect” is maintained in this paper. This report lays the foundation for establishing which dialect or dialects could be used to provide an optimal means of communication across all the Semai dialects. 1This research was carried out under the auspices of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), part of the Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia.
