  • ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: SLAVE SHIPS, SHAMROCKS, AND SHACKLES: TRANSATLANTIC CONNECTIONS IN BLACK AMERICAN AND NORTHERN IRISH WOMEN’S REVOLUTIONARY AUTO/BIOGRAPHICAL WRITING, 1960S-1990S Amy L. Washburn, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Deborah S. Rosenfelt Department of Women’s Studies This dissertation explores revolutionary women’s contributions to the anti-colonial civil rights movements of the United States and Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. I connect the work of Black American and Northern Irish revolutionary women leaders/writers involved in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Black Panther Party (BPP), Black Liberation Army (BLA), the Republic for New Afrika (RNA), the Soledad Brothers’ Defense Committee, the Communist Party- USA (Che Lumumba Club), the Jericho Movement, People’s Democracy (PD), the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA), the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP), the National H-Block/ Armagh Committee, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), Women Against Imperialism (WAI), and/or Sinn Féin (SF), among others by examining their leadership roles, individual voices, and cultural productions. This project analyses political communiqués/ petitions, news coverage, prison files, personal letters, poetry and short prose, and memoirs of revolutionary Black American and Northern Irish women, all of whom were targeted, arrested, and imprisoned for their political activities. I highlight the personal correspondence, auto/biographical narratives, and poetry of the following key leaders/writers: Angela Y. Davis and Bernadette Devlin McAliskey; Assata Shakur and Margaretta D’Arcy; Ericka Huggins and Roseleen Walsh; Afeni Shakur-Davis, Joan Bird, Safiya Bukhari, and Martina Anderson, Ella O’Dwyer, and Mairéad Farrell.

  • 1 an Interview with Danny Morrison Interviewer: John F. Morrison1
An Interview with Danny Morrison Interviewer: John F. Morrison1 Biography: This interview took place in the home of Danny Morrison, in west Belfast in March 2015. While no longer a prominent figure in Sinn Féin, during the Troubles alongside Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness he was one of the most recognisable faces of the republican leadership of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The former Provisional IRA prisoner was the Director of Publicity for Sinn Féin and was the founding editor of An Phoblacht/Republican News. For many he is best known for promoting the dual paramilitary and political strategy of ‘the armalite and the ballot box.’ 2 Context: In the immediate aftermath of the interview, it was announced by Sinn Féin was going to oppose the passage of the welfare bill in the Northern Assembly.3 While this was a key issue, which almost brought down the Stormont Assembly, the interviewer, and possibly the interviewee, was not aware of it at the time of the interview. Two days prior to the interview, the 2015 Sinn Féin ard fheis (annual conference) had finished in Derry. Throughout the ard fheis, various delegates outlined the party’s plans to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. However, while the party was celebrating their past achievements and future plans, they were once again being accused of involvement in criminality. The family of Paul Quinn, murdered in Cullyhanna in 2007, once again accused the Provisional Movement of being responsible for his death, a claim rejected by the party’s leadership.4 John Morrison: I was wondering if you would be able to give your assessment on the relevance to you as an individual of the centenary of the 1916 Rising, also how you feel it is relevant for the overall Republican Movement as well.

POLICY BRIEF #06 2020 Sinn Féin in the EU: The Evolution of Self-Determination Policy Post Brexit Executive Summary The European Union is the most ambitious regional integration project in the world. Yet, as the supranational entity has expanded, so have the number of minority nationalist parties seeking independence from their respective member states. There is much discussion in the literature about whether these parties trend pro- or anti-European. Sinn Féin is a Northern Irish republican party that has undergone an evolution in its EU policy. Brexit, and the related negotiations, have brought forth the issue of self- determination in Northern Ireland and the role of the European Union, twenty-years after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement ended the Troubles. This paper traces Sinn Féin’s EU policy from 1973 to the present and finds that the party has moved from opposition to critical engagement and, now, to a more positive partnership. 1 To: His Excellency Hojjatoleslam Sayed Mohammad Khatami, President of Iran BOBBY SANDS STREET, Tehran, Iran. THE name Bobby Sands is known throughout the world, symbolising the heroism of an Irish prisoner and his comrades who died on hunger strike in their unequal fight against their British jailors. Over the course of the past two years British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has been lobbying Iran’s Foreign Minister to change the name of Bobby Sands Street, where the British Embassy is situated, in the capital Tehran. (It was formerly known as Winston Churchill Street.) Bobby Sands was an Irish patriot and martyr, who died on 5 May 1981, after 66 days on hunger strike. Whilst in prison he was elected as a Member of Parliament [MP]. One hundred thousand people attended his funeral, including the Iranian ambassador to Sweden. The British government has no right to be in Ireland, just as it has no right to be interfering in the affairs of any other nation. We appeal to the Iranian government and its people not to bow to requests from the British government to rename Bobby Sands Street. Sincerely, Danny Morrison Michele Neylon [email protected] Kathleen Collins [email protected]. Addressing the event Sinn Féin’s Vice President, Michelle O’Neill, said a no deal Brexit is incompatible with the ‘Good Friday Agreement’ and if it occurs then a referendum on Irish Unity offers the only solution. Derry-Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013: What lies ahead? Peter Doak This article introduces the UK City of Culture initi- ative, and argues that the attractiveness of this title lies in the belief it can further urban regeneration within the city that holds it. Tracing the origins of Northern Ireland, this logic to Glasgow’s year as European Capital of Culture 1990, the paper challenges perceptions about that city’s regeneration, suggesting much of it UK and Ireland has been superficial. Thereafter it questions the ap- parently universal assumption that Derry will bene- fit from being the UK City of Culture, and concludes by positing the possibility of a better ‘model’ of re- generation emerging from the experiences of 2013. The Inception of United Kingdom City of Culture (UKCOC) The UKCOC title came into being as a mechanism designed to capitalise upon the “success of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture 2008” (culture.gov.uk), through the British government instituting a title which, although modelled on the European Capital of Culture (ECOC), was, from inception to execution, nationally administered. By Owen Polley, Belfast Newsletter Thursday, 1st April 2021, 12:57 pm Is there anybody in Northern Ireland who is surprised by this decision? In the immediate aftermath of the funeral, I wrote in this newspaper that “there is one rule in Northern Ireland for republicans and one for everybody else” (‘The Bobby Storey IRA funer- al was reminder of who is in charge of Northern Ireland,’ July 9, link) Unionists, I predicted, “will just have to suck it up,” because, “the peace process is based on appeasing Sinn Fein and their ilk”. So here we are, after ten months of delay and obfuscation and that forecast has finally been borne out. It took the police five of those months to or- ganise an interview with Michelle O’Neill about Bobby Storey, seen with Martin McGuinness and Martina Anderson in 2014, was a part of the IRA terror campaign, a jailbreaker, a her role in the event. bank-robber.
