2018 Annu Al Repor T ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL HISTORIC 2018 ENTERTAINMENT AS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION OUR MISSION IS TO ENHANCE THE NORTH FLORIDA COMMUNITY’S QUALITY OF LIFE BY PROVIDING DIVERSE AND MEMORABLE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCES, AND BY PRESERVING A UNIQUE HISTORIC JACKSONVILLE LANDMARK. 2 | FLORIDATHEATRE.COM | BOX OFFICE: 904.355.2787 FROM THE PRESIDENT A few weeks ago, toward the end of Frankie Valli’s Florida Theatre concert, we stood at the front of the theatre and looked back at you, the audience. Mr. Valli’s show climaxes with a slamming sequence of hits: “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Let’s Hang On,” and fittingly, “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night).” As each song ended and the first notes of the next song were revealed to the audience, the increasing energy in the room was palpable. 2,000 people who mostly don’t know each other forgot about the world outside the theatre’s doors and shared a communal experience. Whether it’s a veteran artist like Frankie Valli, who’s done this thousands of times, or a brand new artist who has never been here before (there were 30 new artists this year!), these are the moments we strive to provide for you. A great performance to electrify your soul, give you something to cheer for, and even something grand to ponder and think about once in a while. Tom Bolling Chairman Any city can build themselves a concert venue, but for music, dance and theatre artists who love giving great performances, and for audiences who enjoy seeing and hearing those performances in an intimate and authentic venue, there’s only one Florida Theatre. The historic Florida Theatre has been managed, programmed and preserved by the Florida Theatre Performing Arts Center, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, since 1987. We are proud to be the stewards of this historic theatre and an organization that connects the world’s greatest performers with Jacksonville audiences. We take our role as stewards of the historic Florida Theatre seriously, because it’s this 92 year old building that brings us all together. Part of being a good steward of a nonprofit corporation is being transparent about our operations, and we are pleased to present this 2018 Annual Report to you, our sponsors, donors and audience members. The Cultural Organizations of Jacksonville and the Unions Representing Stagehands and Musicians in Northeast Florida Announce they will Maintain their COVID-19 Protocols Jacksonville, Fla. (March 29, 2021) – The cultural organizations of Jacksonville, joined by the unions representing stagehands and musicians in Northeast Florida, announce that they will maintain their COVID-19 protocols for the time being. We thank Mayor Curry and the City of Jacksonville for their leadership on public health and relief funding, which made a limited return to business possible for the cultural community. We recognize that we have a duty of care to those who enter our institutions, and participate in our programs. Continuing our COVID-19 protocols is necessary at this time to protect the health and safety of our employees, volunteers, artists, and audience members. The COVID-19 protocols of each organization may vary, but they contain common elements such as temperature checks, requiring masks, and social distancing measures. The public is encouraged to contact each individual institution for specific measures that are in place at that organization. Each organization will continue assessing its protocols based on local data and the CDC guidelines, and we all look forward to the day when we can enjoy the arts and entertainment again without restrictions. Florida’s largest city has everything from entertainment and history to sports and, yes, W beaches. Groups of all sizes and interests are discovering Ken McCray Ken that Jacksonville really does have it all. EverBank Field is home to the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville, or “JAX,” has a long history in the entertainment and music business. Back in 1916 there were 30 movie companies that called Jacksonville home. Unfortunately, the locals thought that the studios were just too loud. The movie companies packed up and moved to California. The rest is history. This minor setback did not keep entertainment away for long. Beginning in 1956, Elvis Presley performed in Jacksonville eight times. At one of The King’s early appearances, a local judge sat through the performance. He believed it necessary to monitor Presley’s body movements and assure they were not too suggestive. I’m wondering how Visit Jacksonville Visit that worked out. The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra performs September to May. Fast forward to the present and you’ll quickly see that Jacksonville Landing on the St. Johns River in downtown Jacksonville is a hub of continuous entertainment.
