Freethinkers always existed in minority protecting reason and sanity of society. Progress in morals and human rights, development of technology and science is rooted in freethinking. This magazine is an attempt to make sure that the spirit of freethinkers is not lost in a society of conformity and mediocrity. “Freethinkers” magazine discusses issues that are not freely discussed in society. It is a proud effort to spread awareness of freethinking to general public and reduce the irrational nonsense going around the world. Freethinkers will criticize anything irrational or wrong. Freethinkers will promote science and rational thinking so that people can make better decision themselves rather than follow tradition, culture, authority and other shit. Freethinkers will expose anything nonsensical going on around the world. One more idea behind the magazine is that in future if a day comes when you start sensing the stupidity around you and feel something is wrong with the world, you will have a companion which will assure you of reason and freedom. This magazine will act as single source of vast ideas, references and help you make an informed decision. This will present you other side of argument.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is perhaps the best example of widespread pseudoscience in the world. It is basically developed by Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. He believed that a life force flowed in the human body and diseases are nothing but disturbance in this flow. Many pseudoscientific medical systems aka junk systems depend on this assumption which is believed when micro-organisms are not yet known. Modern science made many discoveries about bacteria, fungus and virus. However these discoveries are not accepted by Homeopathic Practioneers. This is how the nonsense of homeopathy is still spreading in the world. Thousands of its makers and proponents instead of checking the validity of what they are preaching try to protect their interests. Today there are several institutes in India which award degrees in Homeopathy. This is the sorry state of affairs not only in India but also the world.

TRUTH IN MATHEMATICS
ABSTRACT The search for truth in religion and philosophy hasn't led to any improvement in human condition but the search for truth in mathematics led to astonishing results. For many, mathematics is truth. When they calculate 2+2=4, they know it's true because mathematics says it is so. This naive belief in certainty of truth obtained from mathematics is precisely what this article is aimed to shatter. Starting with Irrational numbers, Calculus, Quaternions, Set theory, Non-Euclidean geometry, it is shown why the idea of absolute truth is a lost cause. Even going further, the idea of formalism and it's destruction by Gödel’s Incompleteness theorems and Turing Halting problems are discussed, and the limits of mathematics are shown. What mathematics tells us about truths or theoretical limits on knowable and unknowable are discussed. Then the work of G.J.Chaitin is introduced and it is shown how the very idea of truth is shaken by recent development in mathematics where some truths are true randomly or cannot be accessed logically. It begs for pragmatic mathematics since a harmony between experimental and theoretical mathematics is essential to delve deeper into truths as mathematics is the only way of knowing truths if any.

Introduction Humans are curious and this curiosity led to knowledge and wisdom. To seek truth is a terrible urge every human is born with. Every time humans thought they finally grasped the truth, new discoveries shattered their comfort zone uprooting the old truths and replacing with newer truths. This journey in search of truth in mathematics is discussed in this article. The results of the journey are as astonishing as the journey itself.
LOGIC Describing mathematics is easier than defining it. The same goes for truth. Imagine someone saying “1+1=2”. We know it’s true. How we know it’s true depends on our counting. What about “1000+1000=2000”? We obviously don’t count it. Instead we rely on intuition. What about “14327+54632=68959”? The only way we can say whether it’s true or not is by following a mathematical method called addition. How can we say addition method tells us truth? The certainty of addition is a direct result of using mathematical logic.

The study of logic is the study of the methods and principles used in distinguishing correct from incorrect argument. Logic can be defined as laws of thinking. But more precisely reasoning.[1] all reasoning is thinking, but not all thinking is reasoning. Aristotle first systemized logic and popularized it.[2]
When we reason, we are sure. Logic gives certainty. Logic plays a crucial role in Mathematics. Logic and Mathematics are inseparable. There’s a controversy whether logic is an extension of mathematics or mathematics is an extension of logic or whether they are same. However logic permeates throughout the mathematics. So armed with logic, mathematicians find truths. But we need axioms or hypotheses on which the rules of logic can be applied.
Axiomatic System Axioms are self-evident truths. These are intuitively known to be true. Using them we construct new truths or at least access truths if they exist by the application of logic. Logic + Axioms = Axiomatic System
Axioms of Euclidean Geometry (in simple terms): 1. Any two points can be connected by one and only one straight line. 2. Any line segment is contained in a full (infinitely long) line. 3. Given a point and a line segment starting at the point, there is a circle that has the given point as its center and the given line segment as a radius. 4. All right angles are equal to each other. 5. Parallel Postulate: Given a line and a point P that is not on the line, there is one and only one line through P that never meets the original line. These axioms when combined using logic gives the entire Euclidean Geometry. It is so successfully that it hasn’t changed for 2000 years. axioms. We cannot be certain that the axioms are true. Hence to minimize the errors that may be resulted if axioms are false, we try to minimize the number of axioms as much as possible. The term the unproved data is, the better the results would be. Using logic, we can be sure that the result is always true. This system worked very well. There have been attempts to reduce the parallel postulate that says parallel lines don’t meet into a consequence of other four axioms. But the attempts failed. The parallel postulate remains as independent as other axioms.[3]
INTUITIVE MATHEMATICS However there is another school of mathematics which developed by sensing or perceiving truth intuitively. The development of numbers is an example of this. Born out of necessity, developed as a tool for calculations, numbers are still the main core of mathematics. Hindu mathematicians invented the concept of zero, partly born out of Indian philosophy- Nirvana or nothingness. Greeks represented numbers with measurements of lengths of geometric figures. meant to be perfect, quantifiable, and accessible. They felt that they had an absolute method of measuring nature. They thought they can measure and represent the truths of nature. This hope was shattered when they discovered that the diagonal of a square is not a multiple of its side, no matter what the basic unit of measurement is. When they constructed a right triangle with sides of 1 unit, they found out that they cannot measure hypotenuse perfectly. When they developed rational numbers, they are happy that they can always find a measuring unit which will measure any given two lengths perfectly. If two lengths are 7.5 and 3.5, they will change their basic measuring unit to be 0.5, and the lengths become 15 and 7 respectively. So their idea of nature in perfect ratio is shattered with the discovery of √2 , the irrational numbers which cannot be expressed in p/q form.[4] They were so shocked by this discovery that they kept as a closely guarded secret hidden from the world. But truth cannot be hidden. Mathematicians have learnt to accept it.

Mathematicians gritted and kept on discovering truths about irrational numbers, complex numbers and transcendental numbers. They eventually made up to quaternions. These numbers successfully explained many physical processes. Studying and solving electrical circuits had been simplified by using complex numbers. As mathematicians kept on discovery/inventing number systems, these numbers seem to be part of nature making mathematicians confident once again that they can access truths. However, the success of Euclidean geometry is unmatched. It explained everything that people regarded it as absolute truth in the universe. It is the only branch of mathematics which continued to be perfect and absolute giving hope that mathematicians gotten hold of universal truth. A few mathematicians questioned the parallel postulate and tried to develop new geometry without it or using different axioms. These were regarded as mental gymnastics of mathematicians and purely imaginary.

But in the 19th century, Einstein developed relativity theory and showed that universe is four dimensional where the parallel postulate is no longer true. Suddenly, non-Euclidean geometry[5], where parallel lines don’t meet is no longer true, became the reality, the truth of nature. The idea of absolute truth is forever gone. SET THEORY However, mathematicians were happy that they could create whole new branches of mathematics purely by mental process and arrive at truth without any help from nature. One such mathematician, George Cantor, invented a theory of infinite sets. This is a revolutionary concept. To get intuitive feel, let us assume a circle inside another circle with same origin. Now we draw straight lines from origin to the interior circle. Since the number of points we can plot on a curve is infinite, we can draw infinite straight lines. Now extend the straight lines to meet the exterior circle.

We can see that there are gaps between the straight lines or in other words, points on the outer circle are more than inner circle even though both have infinite set of points. So some infinities are greater than other infinities. Cantor using diagonalization showed that infinity of real number is much bigger than infinity of Natural number. Infact he showed that natural numbers are countable while real numbers are uncountable using diagonal argument.[6] He went on to show that if set of natural numbers is given by 1,2,3,4,...... w, where w is first transfinite number(infinity). He went on to 1,2,3,4,...... w...w^2....w^w and continued up to w^w^w.... and it is the smallest solution of x=w^x.[7] Many mathematicians regarded this as mere fantasy and that these numbers are not real. Adding to this mess is Bertrand Russell’s paradox. It is a paradox of set theory and is equivalent to a barber stating “I will shave those who don’t shave themselves.” Now the question is should the barber shave himself or not. contain itself, it should be a member of itself.[8] Many such paradoxes were found out and many branches of mathematics like modern topology and other mathematics depended on this set-theoretic approach were in trouble. We cannot have a theory which gives out paradoxical result which cannot be true or false. Mathematicians struggled a lot to keep mathematics from falling apart. Mathematics doesn’t seem to give out truths easily.
FORMALISM David Hilbert, a French mathematician, decided to clear the mess mathematics led itself into. Since the axioms taken and logic rules applied are vague and often in words with guidance of intuition, he proposed to get rid of these problems by coming up with finite number of axioms and symbolic logic. Using symbolic logic, he wanted to eliminate human intuitive factor out of mathematics. Mathematicians followed his advice and started making foundations of mathematics using symbolic logic.[9] Symbolic logic doesn’t use human language. intuition, understanding taken out, the formal mathematics is a strict calculating machine, in which logic rules when applied on axioms churns out truth like a grinder. Even though the truths are relative, all the truths seem to be achieved by just various combinations of axioms and logic. Formalism=Formal Axiomatic System = Axioms + Symbolic Logic Hilbert envisioned a set of axioms and rules of logic that will give all the mathematical truths with absolute certainty. All truths will then be just a matter of combining axioms and logic. This is Formalism.[10]The results seemed to be encouraging this view and soon mathematics started looking out for programs which will calculate all the mathematics. So, the goal is have no human errors, no interpretations, no paradoxes, and no uncertainty in mathematics. All the truths could be accessed. Whenever somebody claims they have a proof, it should be absolutely clear, mechanical, to check it and verify its truth or falsity. The atmosphere of mathematics heated up as the quest for mathematical truths seemed to be within the reach of mathematicians.

Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems Kurt Gödel, poured cold water on the formalization of mathematics. He shocked the world by proving two theorems called “Incompleteness” theorems which showed we cannot completely formalize the entire mathematics. The idea of absolute truths or mechanical way of knowing truths or making mathematics absolutely clear is dead by a stroke of Gödel’s genius. Before learning what Gödel did, we have to understand the concepts of completeness and consistency of formal axiomatic system. A formal axiomatic system is complete if for any question A, it can settle by proving A or it’s negation ~A. So if we are able to prove or disprove a statement framed in that axiomatic system, then it’s said to have property called completeness. For example: “Prime numbers are infinite.” we should be either prove it or prove its opposite- “Prime numbers are finite.” Therefore we should be able to find truths from false in the system.[11]

But what if we could prove both the statement and its negation? Then we can no longer distinguish truth from false. This is called Inconsistency. If we can prove that a statement is true or else false then the system is consistent. Mathematicians envisioned that a formal axiomatic system could prove all the truths and disprove all the false statements in it. This certainty was broken by Gödel with the help of his two Incompleteness theorems. His results are based on simple yet profound self-referential paradoxes: 1. “This statement is false.” 2. “This statement is unprovable.” First Incompleteness theorem based is based on liar’s paradox: “ This statement is false.” This statement is true if it is false and therefore it is neither true nor false. Gödel’s genius is such that he is able to convert this statement into a concrete mathematical statement. Now this mathematical statement cannot be either true or false. So he proved the existence of statements that can be constructed using the axioms but cannot be proved true or false using logic.

Second Incompleteness theorem is based on the paradox: “This statement is unprovable.” Gödel converted it into a statement in elementary number theory. Arithmetic is considered queen of mathematics and there’s a paradoxical statement. Just think about the statement once again. If that statement is provable then it’s unprovable. Therefore a false statement. So we proved false statement. If that statement is unprovable, then it is indeed unprovable. So it’s true but unprovable. So, there are truths that cannot be proved and false statements that can be proved. Either way there is incompleteness in formal axiomatic theory.[12] In short, Gödel showed that a consistent formal axiomatic system is Incomplete. There are statements that neither true nor false. And there are statements which are true and cannot be proved or worse there are statements that can be proved but false. So, however hard we may try, there are truths that are not accessible by proofs. Regardless of how many truths we find, we cannot say that we found all. Since Gödel showed that unprovable true statements exist but didn’t give any way to know when we encounter them. So, we are forever tormented to find all truths-a task we will never finish.

Since all of the sciences or any other system of knowledge bases itself on certain hypotheses, not matter how many truths we find, there are always truths that will remain unknown to us or truths we cannot be certain of their truth since they are unprovable by the system. So all systems are by virtue of being a system, which depends on unproved assumptions are inherently incomplete. All truths cannot be known for certain and some are neither true nor false. We cannot even distinguish between provable and unprovable truths until we prove.
ALAN TURING: HALTING PROBLEM Mathematicians regarded this as mere anamoly or a curiosity. They thought they can circumvent the incompleteness by adding more axioms or by discovering better rules of logic. However Alan Turing, a British Mathematician in his paper, “ On computable numbers”, showed that this incompleteness discovered by Gödel is throughout mathematics. Computable numbers include numbers like pie or e or √2 etc., whose digits can be computed with precision. For example, we can compute digits of pie using the formula

up to infinite precision. Turing showed that there are real numbers which are uncomputable, i.e., we cannot calculate digits of them to precision. Infact he showed most of the reals are uncomputable. We know only a few reals of all the real numbers. Turing machine can do every possible computation. Think of Input as axioms, program as logic rules and output as truths. So, Turing machine gets outputs(truths) that can be done by any other machine or human. This is a universal computer idea and is precursor of today’s computers. So, Computer science was born out of mathematicians trying to know their limits of calculation. Turing is honored “now” as father of computer science but in his time, he is persecuted for being homosexual and cruelly compelled to suicide. In World War II, he along with other mathematicians broke enemy codes and thereby helping the defeat of Hitler from conquering the world. Great men mostly are not honored but instead suffered in their times.

Turing asked a simple question: “ What is that impossible for Turing machine?” he showed that there are limitations on what Turing machine can compute. He gave one such example: The Halting Problem. Halting problem is a simple question- Is there a program or method of knowing if all programs stop(halt) or continue(run) forever. He showed that there is no way of deciding in advance if any program will eventually halt. [13] He proved it by applying cantor’s diagonal argument to programs. What this means is that if we want to check proofs using formal axiomatic theory, we can write a program into Turing machine to verify that every proof is true or not. But Turing showed it is impossible. Such a program doesn’t exist and hence any formal axiomatic theory have to use logic or reasoning to check proofs, reasoning cannot always verify truth. This is a hole in all axiomatic theories, not just any one. So, all formal axiomatic theories are incomplete. They cannot always check all the truths. The uncomputability or unknowability is universal and inherent in any system. This is like generalizing Gödel’s incompleteness idea.

So, we are trying to understand all the truths or facts of mathematics from just a few axioms and logic. This is understanding. If we cannot reduce all truths to some simple truths, then we cannot understand something. Complex data is said to be non-random if it can be generated by simpler data i.e., lesser than complete data. For example take all even numbers. Listing all even numbers is infinite data(i.e., bits of memory) but they can all be generated by simple data with formula 2n and instruction to increase n one at each step. So, to program to find even numbers, we don’t have to give complete list of natural numbers, we can give simple instruction on how to find them. If we cannot do that, we call the data random. This is the basis of algorithmic information theory-that a given data is random if we cannot compress it into less data and get it back. Since we cannot get al l the truths out of finite axioms of formal axiomatic systems, does that mean truths are random?

OMEGA Indeed, G.J.Chaitin, a mathematician and computer scientist discovered a real number Omega, which cannot be computed. This Omega is the halting probability i.e, the probability that a computer program generated at random, by choosing each of its bits using toss of a fair coin will eventually halt. So a k bit program contributes 1/2^k to omega.[14]
P is program bits. Once we fix a programming language we start checking whether simplest p-bit programs halt or not, then Omega becomes a real number between 0 and 1. Chaiting proved that the bits of Omega are both computationally and logically irreducible i.e., 1) You need an N-bit program to calculate N bits of Omega (any N bits, not just the first N) and so Computationally irreducible or random.

So, to find the bits of Omega using any lesser bits is impossible. Each bit of Omega is equivalent to solving Halting problem. CONCLUSION Mathematics has been more and more certain about uncertainty while uncertain about certainty. There are random irreducible truths without any pattern or reason throughout mathematics. So we are living in a world with islands of truth achievable by reason with a vast sea of random truths below going unnoticed. Unless a radical new insight is brought, the humble conclusion by mathematics is that they will be beyond our grasp. The present suggestion is that we accept some truths like Riemann Hypothesis on experimental basis rather than logical proof since it may be one of the unprovable truths and just include it as another axiom and continue finding new truths. This is a pragmatic approach to mathematics which includes intuitive and axiomatic mathematics for best results until a paradigm shift happens. While at one extreme, Election commission is busy covering the statues of leaders to ensure that voters are not influenced, on the other extreme a blatant form of voter influence happens by media. Election commission has taken note of the situation and which resulted in disqualification of an MLA and even charges against chief ministers! But the disastrous consequences and extent to which paid news had spread is much more than what one can imagine. The matter of how the paid news phenomena should be dealt is still murky. A few mention governments intervention but others prefer self regulation. However both have their limits. Paid news by default show that media doesn’t regulate itself very much and is ready to give itself free passes. But government intervention would create the same problem but then paid news will then become government news. So the issue of tackling paid news is tricky. Perhaps a mixture of both may be right. However intellectuals fear that a small giving away of media’s freedom would result in landslide government intervention which are authentic claims looking back at the history. So, media has to self-regulate itself. Otherwise it would lose the faith public had in it. Media would cease to be change bringers and would be left passive and rotten. Already entertainment and masala are becoming media’s sole function. If media doesn’t wake up now and remove it’s cancer, then it has to face the loss of power and sure extinction.
