Wumart Stores, Inc. 4 Chairman’s Statement TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE GOODS OF PREMIUM QUALITY TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO CREATE WEALTH AND VALUE FOR SHAREHOLDERS Annual Report 2012 5 Chairman’s Statement Dear Shareholders, On behalf of the Board, I am presenting to you the results of operations of Wumart Stores, Inc. (the “Company”) and its subsidiaries (collectively the “Group”) for the year 2012 (the “Reporting Period”). 2012 was a very difficult year for retail enterprises in China. With the slowdown of the pace of economic growth, the shrinkage in consumption, the continual upsurge in staff costs and rental costs, the swift and robust development of electronic commerce, and the entry of other industries to the retail sector, retail enterprises experienced unprecedentedly fierce competition. Being encountered by the severe economic conditions and competitive landscape, the Group adhered to its principle of prudency, and continued to maintain stable results of operations. It achieved a total revenue of RMB17,334.077 million which represented 5.7% growth from that recorded in 2011. The net profit attributable to owners of the Group amounted to RMB601.706 million, an increase of 2.7% from 2011. During the Reporting period, adhering to the strategy of national expansion with regional prioritization, the Group continued to grow bigger and stronger in Beijing, Tianjin and Zhejiang province markets, and move on to tap Hebei province market. In 2012, 61 new stores were opened, meeting perfectly the pre-determined target for store network expansion and building Wumart brand in a wider geographical scope. In 2012, boosting operational capability in fresh merchandises was regarded by the Group as new opportunity for development under the new competitive landscape. The Group confirmed that “core competence represented by fresh fruits and vegetables” became the key operational target in 2012. During the Reporting Period, the Group strenuously uplifted its technology in fruits and vegetables operations, optimized the model of fresh items operations, increased the investments in human resources, physical resources and equipment, and established model shops. By adopting such measures, the Group achieved staged goals in its fruits and vegetables operations in 2012, with an excellent results of after-tax sales of comparable store growing by 21.1% and consolidated gross profit comparable growing by 46.8%. As a leading unit under the project of Fruits and Vegetables Farm-Supermarket Links Supply Chain System Integration and Application Demonstration, a scientific pillar project under the PRC’s Twelfth Five-Year Plan, the Group completed the research and integrated development of the information systems of quality traceability, electronic transactions, logistics and transportation optimization relating to Farm-Supermarket Links, in collaboration with four institutions namely Zhejiang University, Nankai University, Wuhan University of Technology and Research Institute of Forestry, Chinese Academy of Forestry, in addition to the compilation of the standards applicable to logistics tools and the standards applicable to professional technology, all of which explored ways for the future advancement of the Group’s work in its Farm-Supermarket Links initiatives. Meanwhile, the Group confirmed that Beijing Yongshunhua Vegetable Planting Co. Ltd and Shandong Zibo Zhongdeli Vegetables Specialized Cooperatives would become the cooperation bases in terms of thematic study and the study of organic vegetables. From theory to practice, the study will probe into the design proposals, planned applications of future key technologies and the proposals for information systems for the Group’s Farm-Supermarket Links business. While completing a nation-level technology project, it is meant to actively create the Farm-Supermarket business links which is more modernized and standardized. Wumart Stores, Inc. 6 Chairman’s Statement The formation of the Group’s supply chain system is currently on track in terms of the highly-attained standardization and professionalism, with the Group’s North China Distribution Centre receiving approximately 700,000 items of goods and having a throughput of 1.4 million items, delivering approximately 23,000 items of merchandise to superstores by means of cross-docking and approximately 3,500 items by “within-warehouse” mode. In 2012, Group’s North China Distribution Centre completed the change from the “within-warehouse” mode to “cross-docking” mode with the adoption of certain “within-warehouse” processes and the extension of the radius of distribution of the centre from 170 km to 300 km. This represented a radical change and new breakthrough in the entire supply chain model. In 2012, the logistics centre focused on enhancing service delivery to suppliers and stores. Quality and efficiency of service delivery to suppliers and stores were uplifted in terms of such basics as framework, processes, and systems. It effectively improved the efficiency of the Group’s supply chain and lowered the logistics costs involved, and laid an important foundation for the Group’s regional development in a larger scope. It is the Group’s long-term development strategy of focusing on “Technological Excellence” of Wumart as a primary goal of its work. Leveraging upon information technology, the Group adopted IT system management for all of the six items namely “Comprehensive Budget Management Project”, “Enterprise Warehouse Management Project”, “Order Approval Platform Project”, “WRF Mobile Store Management Project”, “Human Resources Management Project” and “Mobile OA Office Project”, thereby effectively uplifting the operational efficiency and quality in the Group’s operation and management. With the support of information technology, the Group achieved its marketing innovation by establishing its new network sales and marketing system which was based on O2O (online to offline) e-commerce. Through electronic means, marketing information would be directly pushed to the targeted consumer groups, which is an effective, precise and low-cost means of marketing. Not only did it actively apply technologies in supporting its operations and management, the Group also converted technologies into productivity,

    ROMANIZATION POLICIES FOR CATALOGING CHINESE MATERIAL: SUPPLEMENT TO THE CHINESE ROMANIZATION GUIDELINES Revised September 22, 2004 This supplement builds on the Chinese romanization guidelines that appear on the Library of Congress pinyin home page (http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/chinese.pdf). The revision of the Chinese guidelines corresponded with the conversion of Wade-Giles romanization in authority and bibliographic records to pinyin on October 1, 2000. The revised romanization guidelines will replace the Wade-Giles guidelines in the ALA-LC romanization tables when it is next updated. The supplement is intended to help catalogers make certain important distinctions when romanizing Chinese personal and place names. RULES OF APPLICATION Romanization 1. ALA-LC romanization of ideographic characters used for the Chinese language follows the principles of the Pinyin ("spell sound") system. The Pinyin system was developed in the mid 20th century for creating Latin script readings for Chinese script ideographic characters. It replaces the Wade-Giles system of romanization specified in earlier editions of the ALA-LC Romanization Tables. The Pinyin system as outlined in Han yu pin yin fang an 汉语拼音方案 (1962) is followed closely for creating romanizations except that the ALA-LC guidelines do not include the indication of tone marks. 2. Standard Chinese national (PRC) pronunciation is used as the basis for creating the Latin script reading of a character. When it is necessary to make semantic distinctions between multiple readings of a single character, rely upon the usage of the most recent comprehensive edition of Ci hai 辞海 (published in China by Shanghai ci shu chu ban she).

SECOND, THE EMPHASIS IS HEAVILY ON THE SPOKEN LANGUAGE, ALTHOUGH THERE EXISTS AN ABUNDANT LITERATURE ON THE CHINESE WRITING SYSTEM. IN VIEW OF THESE SHORTCOMINGS, I HAD RESERVATIONS ABOUT PUBLISHING THE BIBLIOGRAPHY IN ITS PRESENT STATE. HOWEVER, IN THE LIGHT OF OUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR, IT IS CLEAR THAT A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME AND EFFORT IS STILL NEEDED TO PRODUCE A COMPREHENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY THAT IS AT ONCE PROPERLY BALANCED AMD COMPLETELY ACCURATE (AND, PERHAPS, WITH ANNOTATIONS ON THE IMPORTANT ENTRIES).

Eno 4.3 THE RISE OF THE HAN The emergence of the Han Dynasty represents the full confluence of two seemingly contradictory trends that had been increasingly paired since the time of Shang Yang: meritocracy and autocracy. The First Emperor, through his conscious exaltation of his throne and his thorough rejection of Zhou feudalism and hereditary privilege, had created the conditions for the institutionalization of these forces. The founder of the Han Dynasty, Liu Pang, was from a peasant family; during the Qin he served as a petty official in a peripheral region of China. He succeeded to the imperial throne only by prevailing in a civil war that lasted for over four years after the surrender of Ziying, the last ruler of the Qin. His principal opponent during that period was a man named Xiang Yu, who represented everything that Liu Bang was not. Xiang Yu was of patrician stock, a scion of the house of Chu, and the model of a Zhou-style warrior: brave, skillful, elegant, and bloodthirsty. Xiang Yu began as the leader of the very forces that brought Liu Bang to power, and was, for a time, acknowledged by all, including Liu, to be the founder of the successor dynasty to the Qin. Yet he was destroyed by the supporters of a subordinate from the peasant class. Liu Bang ascended the throne in 202 B.C.,* less than twenty years after the end of the Warring States period. MAZANEC Princeton University, USA This is a translation of one of the most influential poetic series of the late-ninth century, the twenty-four “Mountain-Dwelling Poems” written by the Buddhist monk Guanxiu (832–913). Focusing on the speaker’s use of imagery and allusion, the translations are accompanied by annotations which clarify obscure or difficult passages. An introduction places these poems in their historical context and high- lights some of the ways in which they build syntheses out of perceived oppositions (original and revision; Buddhism, Daoism, and classical reclusion; solitude and community; reader’s various perspectives; poem and series). An afterword briefly sketches the method and circumstances of the translation. Sawyer, Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, University of Calgary “The ruthless have always won and the benevolent have always failed” General Chi Haotian The PRC is changing with incredible velocity, rendering many of the numerous books and analytic papers produced over the last decade virtually obsolete even as they are published. To simply catch a glimpse of China’s soul it is necessary to read extensive PRC and PLA websites, numerous government pronouncements and independent reports, a sheaf of academic and technical journals, and a variety of Chinese newspapers on a daily basis. Nevertheless, explaining its explosive growth and analyzing its strategic intentions has become an overpopulated, highly competitive, even acerbic industry, with pundits of every description pontificating upon the immediate and long­term future. Many without any inkling of China's history, topography, or civilization ­­ not to mention cognizance of the Chinese language and its characters ­­ readily offer pronouncements based upon theoretical constructs and inherent prejudices. The China issue has also become highly politicized, virtually intransigent positions having been fervently staked out by numerous self­interested groups including business coalitions, the American Democratic and Republican Parties, a variety of conservative and liberal think tanks, and several government­sponsored research ©Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, Canadian Defence & Foreign Affairs Institute, 2007.
