Li Bai and his poetry works are comprehensively arranged and deeply studied from the perspective of tourism, thereby providing an important basis for developing tourism resources and enriching cultural connotation of tourism products in various regions, and further promoting inheritance and development of China tourism culture. Keywords: Li Bai; tourism resources; tourism culture; tourism aesthetics. 1. Introduction Li Bai is a great romantic poet of China, who 'traveled many famous mountains for his life'. He 'studied immortals in his fifteenth year and never stopped immortal trips'. He 'went to far places with sword' at the age of 25. Li Bai stayed in Dangtu of Anhui at the age of 60 till his death. Li Bai traveled all year round since 15 years old. His steps were radiated to the whole China. Li Bai was repeatedly frustrated in his political career and failed to realize his political ambition especially from 44 to 55 years old. Therefore, he mainly focused on travelling during the period. Such a long and extensive travel is rare among ancient Chinese literati, which also enabled him to transcend his status as a poet. -

CENTER FOR RESEARCH ON INTELLIGENT PERCEPTION AND COMPUTING Message from Director The Center for Research on Intelligent Perception and Computing (CRIPAC) is an independent department at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA). With focuses on three key research platforms, namely SIR (Smart Identity Recognition), DIG (Data Intelligence Gathering) and iSEE (Intelligent Scene Exploration and Evaluation), CRIPAC Biometric Acquisition and Recognition aims to establish intelligent information processing systems that integrate the power of humans, computers and things, and to provide scientific theories, key technologies, pioneering applications and innovative talents for the era of intelligence. The past year 2015 witnessed the flourishing developments of our center. Currently, CRIPAC has an energetic team including four full professors, six associate professors or senior engineers, seven assistant professors, two post-doctoral research fellows, twenty-six technicians and sixty- two postgraduate students. The Reception and Translation of Classical Chinese Poetry in English
NCUE Journal of Humanities Vol. 6, pp. 47-64 September, 2012 The Reception and Translation of Classical Chinese Poetry in English Chia-hui Liao∗ Abstract Translation and reception are inseparable. Translation helps disseminate foreign literature in the target system. An evident example is Ezra Pound’s translation based on the 8th-century Chinese poet Li Bo’s “The River-Merchant’s Wife,” which has been anthologised in Anglophone literature. Through a diachronic survey of the translation of classical Chinese poetry in English, the current paper places emphasis on the interaction between the translation and the target socio-cultural context. It attempts to stress that translation occurs in a context—a translated work is not autonomous and isolated from the literary, cultural, social, and political activities of the receiving end. Art and Religious Beliefs of Kangju: Evidence from an Anthropomorphic Image Found in the Ugam Valley (Southern Kazakhstan)
ART AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF KANGJU: EVIDENCE FROM AN ANTHROPOMORPHIC IMAGE FOUND IN THE UGAM VALLEY (SOUTHERN KAZAKHSTAN) Aleksandr Podushkin South Kazakhstan State Pedagogical Institute Shymkent, Kazakhstan his article analyzes a unique anthropomorphic health, abundance, protection from evil forces, etc. Its T image on a ceramic vessel used as a container for iconographic sources are related to the representative liquids, which was found at the 1st–4th-century CE art and religious beliefs of the ancient ethnic groups site of Ushbastobe in the valley of the Ugam River, of Eurasia of the late Iron Age but also have features Southern Kazakhstan. Miceli** Abstract: Throughout history, religious and political authorities have had a mysterious attraction to each other. Rulers have established state religions and adopted laws with religious origins, sometimes even claiming to have divine powers. We propose a political economy approach to theocracy, centered on the legitimizing relationship between religious and political authorities. Making standard assumptions about the motivations of these authorities, we identify the factors favoring the emergence of theocracy, such as the organization of the religion market, monotheism vs. polytheism, and strength of the ruler. We use two sets of data to test the implications of the model. We first use a unique data set that includes information on over three hundred polities that have been observed throughout history. We also use recently available cross-country data on the relationship between religious and political authorities to examine these issues in current societies. The results provide strong empirical support for our arguments about why in some states religious and political authorities have maintained independence, while in others they have integrated into a single entity. Han Shan (Gary Snyder) (http://www.hermitary.com/articles/han-shan.html) Two distinct biographical traditions exist about the ninth-century Chinese poet and recluse who called himself Han-Shan (Cold Mountain). The first version emphasizes his eccentricity, his visits to a Buddhist temple for stints of odd jobs or to poke fun at the monks' self-importance. This tradition associates him with two other eccentric hermits, Shih-te (Pickup) and Feng-kan (Big Stick). The second tradition is based more solidly on the biographical elements found in his three-hundred-plus poems. These clues to the biography of Han-shan center around his life after the An Lu-shan Rebellion (755-763). For forty years the benign emperor Ming Huang had witnessed unprecedented prosperity under his rule. War, trade, social reform, and the proliferation of the arts had bestowed wealth on nearly every strata of T'ang dynasty China. But in dotage, the emperor's obsession with a concubine grew. He appointed the concubine's unscrupulous brother to full power while disappearing behind a veiled curtain of private pleasures. When the brother's rule inevitably brought about rebellion, the revolt was led by a Tatar official An Lu-shan, and the blood-letting and turmoil continued unabated for eight years. -

A good translation of a Chinese verse can promote the prevalence of Chinese culture. In the translation of Chinese poetry, translators should not only keep the characteristics of Chinese poems, but also embody the English characteristics. This article analyzed some versions of translation and proposed factors affecting the translation of Chinese poetry. Keywords: Chinese Poetry, Translation, Contrast 1. Introduction Chinese poetry is one of the most important parts in Chinese literature. Since The Book of Odes, the first poetry collection written by Confucius in the spring-autumn period was known by people, Chinese poetry has developed quickly. In the Tang Dynasty, Chinese poetry was at its peak. In this period, many immortal poems were written and had great influence on the later Dynasties. In the later Dynasties, Chinese poetry went on its development. But because of the development of other literary styles—Yuan Songs (drama created mainly in Yuan Dynasty), novels, and essays, poetry is no longer the major literary style. In this article, I’d like to talk about the contrast of Chinese and English in the translation of Tang-poems. Tang-poems has very strict phonological format. In each stanza, there are five (in quatrains) or seven (in regulated verses) words. Using limited words to express unlimited sense is the major characteristic of Chinese poetry. -

Zide The Department The Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations is a multidisciplinary department comprised of faculty with expertise in the languages, literatures, histories, philosophies, and religions of South Asia. The examination of South Asian texts, broadly defined, is the guiding principle of our Ph.D. degree, and the dissertation itself. This involves acquaintance with a wide range of South Asian texts and their historical contexts, and theoretical reflection on the conditions of understanding and interpreting these texts. These goals are met through departmental seminars and advanced language courses, which lead up to the dissertation project. The Department admits applications only for the Ph.D. degree, although graduate students in the doctoral program may receive an M.A. degree in the course of their work toward the Ph.D. Students admitted to the doctoral program are awarded a six-year fellowship package that includes full tuition, academic year stipends, stipends for some summers, and medical insurance. Experience in teaching positions is a required part of the 2 Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations program, and students are given opportunities to teach at several levels in both language courses and other courses. -

“Notes on the Yuezhi - Kushan Relationship and Kushan Chronology”, by Hans Loeschner Notes on the Yuezhi – Kushan Relationship and Kushan Chronology By Hans Loeschner Professor Michael Fedorov provided a rejoinder1 with respect to several statements in the article2 “A new Oesho/Shiva image of Sasanian ‘Peroz’ taking power in the northern part of the Kushan empire”. In the rejoinder Michael Fedorov states: “The Chinese chronicles are quite unequivocal and explicit: Bactria was conquered by the Ta-Yüeh-chih! And it were the Ta-Yüeh-chih who split the booty between five hsi-hou or rather five Ta-Yüeh-chih tribes ruled by those hsi-hou (yabgus) who created five yabguates with capitals in Ho-mo, Shuang-mi, Hu-tsao, Po-mo, Kao-fu”. He concludes the rejoinder with words of W.W. Tarn3: “The new theory, which makes the five Yüeh- chih princes (the Kushan chief being one) five Saka princes of Bactria conquered by the Yüeh- chih, throws the plain account of the Hou Han shu overboard. The theory is one more unhappy offshoot of the elementary blunder which started the belief in a Saka conquest of Greek Bactria”.1 With respect to the ethnical allocation of the five hsi-hou Laszlo Torday provides an analysis with a result which is in contrast to the statement of Michael Fedorov: “As to the kings of K’ang- chü or Ta Yüeh-shih, those chiefs of foreign tribes who acknowledged their supremacy were described in the Han Shu as “lesser kings” or hsi-hou. … The hsi-hou (and their fellow tribespeople) were ethnically as different from the Yüeh-shih and K’ang-chü as were the hou… from the Han. -

Twelfth in this series is the mid-Qing dynasty figure of Jixing Chewu |£|IfS(ti§, a Chan monk in the Linji line who, in mid-life, abandoned the practice of Chan and devoted himself exclusively to the Pure Land path. After this change of direction, he put his energy into building up his home temple, the Zifu Temple |f^§# on Hongluo Mountain HiiULl in Hebei, into a center for Pure Land practice, and his talks and essays focused on issues related to Pure Land practice, philoso phy, and apologetics.
