S P E C I A L I Z E D A G E N C I E S TOWARDS THE KALMAR UNION Dear Delegates, Welcome to the 31st Annual North American Model United Nations 2016 at the University of Toronto! On behalf of all of the staff at NAMUN, we welcome you to the Specialized Agency branch of the conference. I, and the rest of the committee staff are thrilled to have you be a delegate in Scandinavia during the High Middle Ages, taking on this challenging yet fascinating topic on the futures of the three Scandinavian Kingdoms in a time of despair, poverty, dependence and competitiveness. This will truly be a new committee experience, as you must really delve into the history of these Kingdoms and figure out how to cooperate with each other without sending everyone into their demise. To begin, in the Towards the Kalmar Union Specialized Agency, delegates will represent influential characters from Denmark, Norway and Sweden, which include prominent knights, monarchs, nobles, and important religious figures who dominate the political, military and economic scenes of their respective Kingdoms. The impending issues that will be discussed at the meeting in Kalmar, Sweden include the future of the Danish and Norwegian crowns after the death of the sole heir to the thrones, Olaf II. Here, two distant relatives to Valdemar IV have a claim to the throne and delegates will need to decide who will succeed to the throne. The second order of business is to discuss the growing German presence in Sweden, especially in major economic cities. -

In the Name of God University of Tehran Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures Reconciliation of Paganism and Christianity in Beowulf: The Role of Epic Poetry as a Reconciler of Opposing Cultural Elements a New-Historicist Reading By Farbod Azsan Supervisor Dr. Maryam Soltan Beyad Reader Dr. Hamed Habibzadeh A thesis submitted to the Graduate Studies Office in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of M.A. in English Language and Literature April 2019 Abstract: Epic poems lend themselves greatly to new-historical reading, because they embrace their role as exposers of power relations in their society, so much in fact that there is not much need for reading between the lines; the epic poet proudly presents cultural elements, historical figures and norms that the dominant hegemony endorses. Beowulf, as one of these epic poems, is a portal to many Anglo-Saxon, Pagan and Germanic cultural norms, namely Comitatus, boasting before battle and the warrior code related to the Germanic Pagan culture. However, it is ultimately a promoter of Christian values. So it is clear that Beowulf is a Pagan story retold by a poet with Christian sensibilities. The writer of this thesis, using Seamus Heaney‘s translation, approaches the text of Beowulf with special regard to the juxtaposition of Pagan and Christian cultural elements in its text. The relationship between these two opposing cultural elements is manifested in Pagan and Christian tensions which the poet tries to resolve: 1. Wyrd (or the fate that drives men to destruction) and the mercy of the Christian God 2. The presence of mythological monsters in a Christian world 3. -

1 The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research Report to be discussed at the 28th Congress of Nordic Historians, Joensuu 14-17 August 2014 2 Preface This report is written by members of a working group called Nordic Reformation History Working Group, that was established as a result of a round table session on the reformation at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Tromsø in Norway in August 2011. The purpose of the report is to form the basis of discussions at a session on “The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research” at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Joensuu in Finland in August 2014. Because of its preliminary character the report must not be circulated or cited. After the congress in Joensuu the authors intend to rework and expand the report into an anthology, so that it can be published by an international press as a contribution from the Nordic Reformation History Working Group to the preparations for the celebration in 2017 of the 500 years jubilee of the beginning of the reformation. Reformation, Manors and Nobility in Norway -L00--AN- By Arne Bugge Amundsen Introduction Since the nineteenth century, Norwegian historians have debated the im- The manor of Laurvigen portance of manors and the nobility. Norway was colonized by a Danish elite that used the Lutheran Refor- mation in the sixteenth century to take over the positions and the prop- erties of the old Roman Catholic Church and the weakened Norwegian aristocracy. The parts of Norway that were most influenced by this devel- opment were the eastern and western sides of the OsloNord, and parts of Trøndelag and western Norway. In these regions, manors and the nobil- ity were major forces in creating new social, economic, cultural and sym- bolic systems for ruling, for the exercise of power, and for religious and legal control, systems which have many similarities to those of many other European countries. Manors and manor houses constituted important encounters between local and continental cultures, important links be- tween Norway and the political centre in Copenhagen, the capital of Den- mark-Norway, and – not least – provided career opportunities to young and aspiring members of the country’s ruling elite. -

Chapter 3 The Viking Diaspora Introducing the Viking Diaspora The Long, Broad Viking Age – Continuities in Time and Space Archaeologists recognise that Scandinavia is characterised by ‘remarkable patterns of continuity which link the distant past to the present’.1 These patterns can be seen, not just in archaeological evidence, but in many cultural practices particularly associated with the Viking Age. The continuities suggest that some evidence for the Viking Age is best considered in a chronological context broader than even the generous framework of 750-1100. This broader chronological context was outlined in Chapter 1, where it was argued that it should be extended to c. 1500. Because the Viking Age is the period when many Scandinavians left Scandinavia, often permanently, it is also important to widen the geographical range, and consider evidence from all the areas touched by Scandinavian settlement in that period. Just as much of the evidence stretches the chronological boundaries of the Viking Age, so there is also much evidence, whether natural, artefactual or linguistic, that stretches those geographical boundaries, and which can only be considered in the context of the larger Viking world. This geographical framework was outlined in Chapter 2, above. 1 Hodder and Hutson 2003, 140. 1 The purpose of this chapter is to show by means of a small number of examples how this long, broad Viking Age works in practice, in connection with various kinds of natural, artefactual and linguistic evidence for the Viking Age. This does not mean that there is no space for the local, the regional and the otherwise particular. -

Paternal Legacy in Early English Literature Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Erin Marie Szydloski Shaull Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Christopher A. Jones, Advisor Leslie Lockett Karen Winstead Copyright by Erin Marie Szydloski Shaull 2015 Abstract This dissertation argues that literature in Old English and early Middle English characterizes legacy-giving as a serious obligation of fatherhood and key paternal role. I contend that the father’s legacy in this cultural context can be understood to include property, heirlooms, wisdom, and kin ties. This project contributes to the emerging study of fatherhood, which has begun to examine fatherhood as a previously under-explored phenomenon that is both a cultural institution and a part of many men’s lived experiences. I examine Anglo-Saxon law-codes, Old English wisdom poetry, Beowulf, and the Middle English texts The Proverbs of Alfred and Layamon’s Brut in order to argue for the cultural importance of this fatherly role. I argue that many of the same cultural markers of Anglo-Saxon paternal legacy continue to be relevant after the Norman Conquest, but that the Norman practice of strict patrilineal primogeniture alters certain aspects of fatherhood. While Old English literature prizes a relationship between father and son that includes an ongoing giving of self on the part of the father, early Middle English literature prefers an ideal father who serves as a prototype for the son, dying just as the son reaches adulthood. -

La Universidad de Valencia tiene establecido con esta universidad un convenio de intercambio de alumnos y profesores dentro del programa Sócrates-Erasmus. En este contexto hemos entablado relaciones prometedoras con profesores del área de lengua y literatura de dicha institución y estamos estudiando la puesta en marcha de un grupo conjunto de trabajo en tomo al bilingüismo. En una reciente visita a Valencia la profesora Maagerjil impartió una conferen cia sobre la diversidad lingüística y cultural en Noruega y su tratamiento en la escuela. En Noruega conviven diversos dialectos orales del noruego junto con dos versiones oficiales de lengua escrita y dos lenguas no indoeuropeas de las minorías étnicas lapona y finlandesa, a las que hay que añadir las múltiples len guas de las minorías de inmigrantes. El interés del tema, la singularidad del caso noruego y la oportunidad de estar preparando este número monográfico de Lenguaje y textos nos movieron a pedirle un artículo para incluir en nuestra revista. Creemos que puede constituir una interesante contribución al debate en tomo al tratamiento de la diversidad lingüística y cultural. Departamento de Didáctica de la Lengua y la Literatura. INTRODUCTION Only 4,5 million Norwegians, two written Norwegian languages, a lot of dialects which have such a strong position that they can be spoken even from the platform in the parliament, and no oral standard language which children are taught in school.
