  • 1960'S SHIP's LOGS
By Sam185 1960’s SHIP’S LOGS Last Updated 1st December 2020 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION Page 2 LIST OF SHIP’S LOGS Page 3 1964 Page 4 1965 Page 11 1966 Page 26 1967 Page 31 1968 Page 37 ©Sam185 2012, 2013 Page 1 INTRODUCTION The information contained in the following pages has been transcribed directly from the official SHIP’S LOGs of HMS RELENTLESS which can be viewed at the National Archives in Kew. In the main, these logs were completed by the Officer of the Watch (OOW) when the ship was at sea and by the Quartermaster (QM) when the ship was in harbour. Each log, representing one calendar month, was completed in PENCIL, with no erasure allowed. Any errors were crossed out and the correct data entered, and each log was signed and dated by the Captain on a weekly basis. There does not appear to be any strict rule regarding what goes in the logs. Some OOWs were diligent in completing the logs, some were not. The same is true of entries made by the QM. Quite a few log entries have NOT been transcribed. When at sea, there are numerous entries regarding changes of course eg.”a/c to avoid fishing vessels” and in harbour, many references to the Guard Boat or MOD Police patrols, or ships passing. As is the way of things, many entries are abbreviated, have acronyms or are accepted Naval terms or expressions and these are shown ‘as is’. Ships names are shown in upper case eg. JUPITER or RFA OLMEDA. Shore Establishments are styled as follows: HMS Mercury Any data show in italics is information added to clarify or question the log entries, and entries shown in quotes are verbatim.

153 Preliminary Report upon the Fauna ~nd Flora of Plymouth Sound. By Walter Heape, II.1\.. THIS Preliminary Report upon the Fauna and Flora of Plymouth Sound is almost entirely composed of lists of species which have been recorded as either actually taken in Plymouth Sound, or common to the neighbourhood. The list of Marine Algre is a repr'int of the late Mr.T. Boswarva's catalogue, with a few additions kindly furnished me by Mr. Holmes. Mr. C. Spence Bate has been kind enough to prepare a list of Crustacea, and is largely responsible £01'the information upon that group of animals contained herein. Mr. Baker has been good enough to provide a list of the Mollusca of the Sound and neighbouring coast, which has been of great nse ~o me; while to several fishermen I am indebted for the names o£ some of the rarer fishes caught in the locality. • Bounded by Heritage and the Tamar: Cornwall As 'Almost an Island'
Island Studies Journal, 15(1), 2020, 223-236 Bounded by heritage and the Tamar: Cornwall as ‘almost an island’ Philip Hayward University of Technology Sydney, Australia [email protected] (corresponding author) Christian Fleury University of Caen Normandy, France [email protected] Abstract: This article considers the manner in which the English county of Cornwall has been imagined and represented as an island in various contemporary contexts, drawing on the particular geographical insularity of the peninsular county and distinct aspects of its cultural heritage. It outlines the manner in which this rhetorical islandness has been deployed for tourism promotion and political purposes, discusses the value of such imagination for agencies promoting Cornwall as a distinct entity and deploys these discussions to a consideration of ‘almost- islandness’ within the framework of an expanded Island Studies field. Keywords: almost islands, Cornwall, Devon, islands, Lizard Peninsula, Tamar https://doi.org/10.24043/isj.98 • Received May 2019, accepted July 2019 © 2020—Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Introduction Over the last decade Island Studies has both consolidated and diversified. Island Studies Journal, in particular, has increasingly focussed on islands as complex socio-cultural-economic entities within a global landscape increasingly affected by factors such as tourism, migration, demographic change and the all-encompassing impact of the Anthropocene. Islands, in this context, are increasingly perceived and analysed as nexuses (rather than as isolates). Other work in the field has broadened the focus from archetypal islands—i.e., parcels of land entirely surrounded by water—to a broad range of locales and phenomena that have island-like attributes.
