NN: You guys are no rookies, how many years have you been an off-ice offi cial? Tim Wheeler: I’ve been with the Condors since day one, although I spent most of the 2006- 07 season on the disabled list after suffering a Match-Major Slashing Penalty of my right leg. Diane Wiggins: 13 years!?!? NN: How did you guys get into it initially? TW: I began my time with the Condors after meeting the original radio voice, Deric Voelker, at a Blaze game, where I told him I used to go to LA Kings games as a kid and I always wanted to be a goal judge. Well, it was a serendipitous meeting, as he was in charge of as- sembling the off-ice offi cials, and I was in. I served as a goal judge for several years as well as fi lling in as the game clock/scoreboard operator until I was asked to be the scorer and off ice offi cial assigner around 2002/03 (the position Fred Olague took over after that aforemen- tioned Major Slashing). DW: I was playing inline hockey at the time and got a heads up on how to become a volun- teer for the Bakersfi eld Fog. NN: When you’re not helping out as an off-ice offi cial, what are you up to? TW: I also serve as the offi cial scorer for the Blaze during the baseball season. DW: I work at California State University, Bakersfi eld for the AVP of Academic Programs. NN: Do you have a favorite story from over a decade of off-ice offi ciating? TW: It has to be the game in which Ken Baker got to start the fi nal home game of the season after spending the year gathering material for a book, although I don’t think he saw any action during the year. Baker had overcome some personal medical issues and if memory serves me, Baker and the Condors won the game, and I think it may have been in a shootout. My other favorite memories involve the handful of line-brawls I’ve witnessed over the years. DW: A few years ago two players went into the boards (north end) and shattered the glass. The glass blew out into the fans several rows up (it used to be on the jumbo tron before each game). That took my breath away!
