2021 Spring Convocation We are Future Focused Humber is focused on our students’ future. In response to rapidly advancing technology and a constantly evolving workforce, a Humber education helps students prepare for their career. Our programs blend theory and hands- on learning, giving students the opportunity to gain practical experience in class and through work-integrated learning. Students learn from professors with industry experience who know what skills are in demand. A wide range of credentials including certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, Ontario graduate certificates and degrees help prepare students for what’s next, whether that be furthering their education, or the start of their career. Students also receive credit for current and prior learning through many pathways and transfer opportunities. With Humber’s diverse experiential learning opportunities ranging from placements, internships, applied research projects and more, students graduate as career-ready, global citizens. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Alders” in Michi Saagiig language, the region is uniquely situated along the Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. I know this is not how you probably imagined celebrating your achievements this spring. While the celebrations look different, your Humber family applauds your success and we look forward to the new beginnings and possibilities that await you. We are proud of your accomplishments and wish you continued success in your next adventure. You are now part of an exclusive club of fellow Humber alumni. From the felds of business and technology to healthcare, communications, media, hospitality and the arts, our more than 278,000 alumni have been making an impact locally and around the world for over half a century. Amidst the exceptional circumstances of a global pandemic and all of the unknowns it brings with it, you have risen to the challenge and you have succeeded. You have demonstrated your resilience and adaptability and are now part of the growing community of Humber alumni around the world who are leading communities to new opportunities and making a difference. At Humber, we are committed to life-long learning and academic excellence, and I hope that you’ll never stop seeking out innovation, discovery, new knowledge and ways to inspire change. Many of you graduating today will soon begin your careers. You will go on to be our business leaders, educators, public servants, philanthropists, inventors and innovators. THE 21st CENTURY INSTITUTION As we move boldly forward with our strategic plan, a strong foundation will be integral to our success. 7 2021 SPRING CONVOCATION Humber’s Academic Regalia The academic regalia worn by Humber’s faculty, students and administration represent centuries of tradition. The style and colour of gowns, hoods and caps is specifc to individual institutions and disciplines. Faculty and administrative staff wear the academic dress appropriate to the highest credential they have earned. The gowns, vee stoles and hoods worn by our graduates refect Humber’s offcial colours of blue and gold. Graduates of Humber’s certifcate and diploma programs wear a three-toned vee stole. The vee stole colours consist of antique gold, navy blue and the velvet trim associated with the discipline of the area of study. Recipients of Humber’s Ontario graduate certifcates wear a gold satin hood with a navy blue stripe around the exterior trim and is lined with navy blue. Graduates of Humber’s Baccalaureate degree programs wear a hood that is three feet long. Each hood has a navy blue shell with one antique gold cord around the exterior trim and is lined with antique gold satin. The colour of the velvet trim on each hood is associated with the discipline of the degree received: • Bachelor of Behavioural Science: Navy Blue • Bachelor of Child and Youth Care: Maize • Bachelor of Commerce: Beige • Bachelor of Community Development: Peacock Blue • Bachelor of Creative Advertising: White • Bachelor of Digital Communications: Crimson • Bachelor of Film and Media Production: White • Bachelor of Industrial Design: Chamois • Bachelor of Interior Design: Mauve • Bachelor of International Development: Peacock Blue • Bachelor of Journalism: White • Bachelor of Music: Maroon • Bachelor of Paralegal Studies: Purple • Bachelor of Public Relations: Crimson • Bachelor of Social Science - Criminal Justice: Navy Blue Graduates of the University of New Brunswick (UNB) - Humber Collaborative Bachelor of Nursing program wear academic dress that refects UNB’s traditions, including black gowns, black caps with tassels, and hoods with apricot satin interiors. Members of the platform party wear a hood based on the institution from which they graduated and the credential they hold. Some members will wear the standard black hood with white velvet trim and antique gold satin lining with two dark blue chevrons. Honorary degree recipients wear white hoods. 8 20212020 SPRINGFALL CONVOCATION CONVOCATION Humber’s Mace Coat of Arms The mace is a symbol of authority, deriving from its original function as a weapon. Today, maces are frequently carried in formal processions, especially in ceremonies related to government or higher education.
