IT’S SHOWTIME! An Excellent Exhibition Of Awesome Talent by Teresa Jennings With this special all-school revue, we offer a venue for you to showcase your students’ talents however you like. The songs provided aren’t just fun to sing, they are perfect ways to set up performances by the many unique talents found in your classroom or the entire school. Use some or all of these songs to make up a program that displays your school’s star performers from dancers to singers, from instrumental soloists or small groups to acrobats. It’s Showtime!... as only your school can do it! From Volume 28 of MUSIC K-8 magazine, It’s Showtime! includes: • It’s Showtime! - Part show tune, part rock/country/pop anthem, the first song in the revue provides you with an enthusiastic opening statement that sets the tone for what will follow. Opportunities abound for adding show-like hand gestures, actions, and other simple movement. • This Is Where I Am - Let your youngest students, or a combination of younger and older students, sing about themselves and their place in the world. Happily, this is also a song that can be used in a cross curricular way, teaching children to think of perspective – an abstract idea, to be sure. Mostly though, it is just plain cute. • If Feet Could Talk - Accessible to singers of all ages, this jazzy swing tune features a terrific big band on the Performance/Accompaniment recording. Purposeful “holes” in the melody allow you to fill them with the rhythm of your young tappers’ feet. An instrumental interlude is perfect for a featured section of tapping. Use our choreography, or come up with your own! • Play In A Rhythm Band - This easy-going country folk style song gives you a chance to show off your percussion ensemble. While we have written out suggested parts for the instruments named in the lyrics, you can change the rhythmic patterns or instruments being used if you like. Vocally, this song is a duet. The second part is optional, but it adds a nice sound when incorporated. Use a small group of older students or other singers for reinforcement if you need a little help. For a neat effect during the second time through, the vocalists whistle instead of sing! • It Is To Laugh - Good luck getting your kids to keep straight faces during this silly piece. Not only does it have jokes, it asks performers to assume an air of pompousness while doing it. Therein, of course, lies the humor. • Give With Your Heart - Every revue needs at least one gentle song to balance it. In this case, we decided to make it a song with a message. A reminder of generosity, brotherhood, and good will is something we could all use. This song also provides an opportunity to include ukulele, guitar, and some optional percussion, if you wish. We have even suggested some optional movement with scarves, indicated on the music. • Miles Of Smiles - Wrap up the show with a lively send off! This rock march provides just that with a super simple verse and an easily remembered chorus hook to bounce along with. While there is a part 2, as usual it’s optional. Very simple, very catchy, very fun.

Our arrangement is fairly simple, treating it as a 3-part round, performed three times through. Optionally, you may choose to do the first time through as unison, then break into the round. • Start Your Day With A Song - This energetic big band piece sounds like it could have been featured in any number of old movie musicals. Of course, the most important thing you’ll want your students to do is sing out! After all, there’s a message here. And if you use this piece in a performance, a corresponding video demonstrating some terrific movement ideas is included. • Music In Our School - This song is a perfect vehicle to celebrate Music In Our Schools Month because it involves everyone. It has two vocal parts, two (optional) recorder parts, multiple percussion parts, and even optional clapping. The piece has a percussive mixture of Latin and worldbeat textures, and the melody is simple throughout allowing students of every age to participate. • We Believe In Music - Bold and assertive in its message and its style, this symphonic rock anthem is a lot of fun to sing and listen to. For this collection, though, we have selected special works that take us through outer space, through time, and into the imaginative world of the mind. And all of these tunes have creative settings that will really engage young players and make them sound great in performance. Recorders From Out Of This World includes the following tunes: • Starbeast - This driving orchestral rock tune with an infectious groove will appeal to sci-fi fans! There are two recorder parts for this tune – one for soprano and one for alto recorder. The soprano recorder part uses E, G, A, B, and C, and should be easy enough for most young players. The optional alto part uses the notes C, D, and E. It’s also a good tune to practice staccato playing. • Bella’s Blues - Beginning and ending with an orchestral nod to J. S. Bach’s “Toccata,” the song itself is a big band blues with a bit of fun thrown in. There are two recorder parts that work separately or together, one featuring G, A, B, and C, and the other just A and C – a real bonus for teachers who like to start with these two notes. The tune is also great for combining groups of players a year apart. • Bad Day At The Droid Works - Machine-like, yet with energy, a full orchestra and professional sound effects make this a fun tune for your kids to play B, A, and G. The recorder part is very straightforward, and aside from only using B, A, and G, it never gets more rhythmically complicated than quarter notes. However, the recorded accompaniment creatively bounds along in its own harmonic and melodic universe with lots of chromatics and whole tone sounds. At the very end, players are given the option to become droids gone awry. • Mission: 5 - We’ve had a number of requests to sink our toes into the less common time signatures, and this is a fun way to do it. This may seem like a daunting mission, but believe us, it is by no means impossible. Actually, we have designed the song to make 5/4 quite accessible and easy to learn. This original tune is exciting to listen to and play, but the students’ part is simple, and we limit the notes they play to G, A, B, and C. • Rockin’ Raptor - Whenever you’re ready to start your recorder students on the notes A and C, we’re sure this fun tune will capture their interest. The tune is driving shuffle rock, or perhaps rockabilly to some ears, complete with a big jazzy horn section. The rhythms are simple and repetitive, in a typical blues form, with your students playing half notes and quarter notes throughout. • March Of The Abominable Alien Aardvarks - If this tune sounds a little bit “alien,” it’s because the entire work is created with whole tone scales. Sort of march, sort of sci-fi, there are two recorder parts: Recorder 1 requires G, A, B, and C, while Recorder 2 uses G, A, B, plus low E. The tune can be played successfully with just the first part, but it’s much more fun with both recorder parts. There’s even an opportunity for students to add their own ad libbed “alien” sounds at the end. In Print Now!
