AN EXCITING NEW SENIORS TENNIS EVENT FOR QUEENSLAND IN 2015 Put a note in your diaries now for the 17th to 20th April 2015. A fantastic new tournament is to be staged at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Brisbane. This will be the only event on the Seniors Calendar in Australia to be played largely on plexicus hion courts, although the older age groups (which groups will depend on entry numbers) will play on the clay and grass courts at the Centre. The TSQ Tennyson Championships will effectively replace the TSQ Claycourt Championships which have been played at the George Alder Centre in Ipswich for the past few years. The ITF Seniors Committee will grade this tournament when they meet in November 2014, but we have applied for a minimum ITF3 grading. Now we know that there will be some comment about playing on plex icushion, as opposed to clay or artificial grass. These are not hard courts as you know them ! The surface is constructed of a blend of latex, rubber and plastic particles and has much more "give" than traditional hard courts, although there is not as muc h "slide". Many would say that they are not any tougher on your body than artificial grass - if in doubt, give the m a try beforehand! Venue Aerial view - Queensland Tennis Centre This is a fantastic centre - an $82 million facility completed in 2009, located adjacent to the Brisbane River. Most of the courts (23) are plexicushion, the surface used for the Australian Open. There are also 4 clay courts and 4 grass courts. The centre hosts the ATP World Tour "Brisbane International" which has been won previously by Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt, as well as numerous Davis and Federation Cup ties. Roger Federer has been secured again for the 2015 tournament. The centre court is named Pat Rafter arena, after the grand slam Queensland winner. This is a wonderful facility and indeed we are fortunate that the management have agreed to make it available for this event. Two coffee shops and a pro-shop/restaurant are on site!! Main entrance and Pat Rafter arena - west view Brisbane Brisbane is now a great international city and Australia's third largest after Sydney and Melbourne. At present, no seniors event is held in the city, a situation we are wanting to rectify. The centre is well located to the city with bus and train transport nearby, and obviously ample accommodation. The TSQ Tennyson Championships The tournament will host IPIN singles for all age groups, and a range of age and round robin doubles events. Most matches will be played on the plexicushion courts, but our intention is to play older age groups on the clay and grass courts. A number of finals will be played on centre court. We are hopeful that it will be a great success, but we need you to make that a reality! See you there!! .
