Dear Member,

TART SPREADING THE NEWS for our Season Opener events and activities throughout the month of November. Our staff is working harder than ever to make this another great year! Our annual Evening Tennis Exhibition and Dinner on November 8 will get us started. Next up, on November 9 & 10 is our annual Golf tournament followed by the next weekend’s Tennis and Pickleball events. Join us on Friday, November 15 for a Night in Morocco … an exotic evening that will bring you to a land of unimaginable beauty and mystical wonder. As you journey from Marrakesh to the Casbah on your “magic carpet” while taking in all of the sights in between, this will be an evening filled with magic and fantasy that is not to be missed! Rounding out the month will be our Spa Fair on Saturday, November 23 and the annual Turkey Trot Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, November 30. As you can see by the photo below, our garden, created in memory of our former director of golf, Brad Luken, is really starting to take shape. The live oak, his favorite tree on all our courses, was planted in March. Pavers and landscaping were added during the month of May. A sitting area as well as a commemorative plaque will be in place soon. As you know, the Fitness Center and Spa renovation began last month and will continue through the end of September. The details regarding this period of time can be found on page 19. Of course we will keep you updated as needed throughout the project. I’m pleased to announce that we recently welcomed Tracy Bradbury to our management team as the new director of food and beverage. Tracy comes to us with years of experience in the industry, such as Tiburon Golf Club and Ritz Carlton Hotels. In addition, we have recently promoted Alev Ersoy to director of restaurants. Please welcome Tracy and congratulate Alev as you see them both. We are scheduled to launch our new website and mobile app the first of October. This new app will bring everything you need to your fingertips and allow you to personalize your applications for even further ease of use. For those of you who may not be so tech savvy, we are working on a schedule of classes that will be offered to help you navigate your way around. This schedule will be announced in the very near future. Your annual Membership Dues package has been mailed. If you have not received yours yet or have any questions, please contact the Membership department at 488-6934 and they will be happy to assist in any way possible. In closing, I wanted to once again express a heartfelt Thanks on behalf of the employees and their families who attended our Family Fun Day (aka Picnic) back in June. It was a wonderful day filled with excitement, good food and camaraderie and it was sincerely appreciated. As always, I welcome and encourage your thoughts, comments and suggestions regarding your Club and look forward to seeing you around. Wishing you all a very happy and healthy summer!

Sincerely,

Matthew Linderman, CCM President, COO & General Manager

BOCA WEST 17 | FITNESS, AQUATICS & SPA Bodyweight Before External Resistance In regards to exercise programs, it is always stressed that we should gradually build up. This rule applies to strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Yet you will still be see someone get on a treadmill and start running immediately. The same goes By Julie Ross, with walkers, someone will get on a treadmill and start Fitness Coordinator at 3.5 miles per hour and never increase their speed. The problem with that isn’t the speed itself, but the fact that you’re starting at your max speed. If 3.5 mph is your max speed, that’s fine, however you should start slower and give your body a chance to get warmed up so it can gradually get accustomed to the exercise. The same goes for weight training, however we seem to miss an important step. Starting gradually doesn’t mean starting the weight low, it means working with what you have naturally, your own body weight. Regardless of your goal, one thing is the same for everyone. Before we even think about adding an external load (weights and / or machines) you need to be able to stabilize, control and move efficiently in all three planes of motion (front to back, side to side and rotation). For most people the body weight they carry around everyday is enough to create challenging exercises if they have control and are able to stabilize in those positions. External load is important, but it has been overemphasized. The bench press (chest press) is often included in a basic workout program. The exercise performed on a bench or on a machine requires very little control and stabilization. The exception to this would be someone performing the chest press with free weights on an unstable surface (such as the ball or BOSU). You can work a similar muscle group add control, stabilization and an incredible amount of core work by doing a push-up instead. Many people will reaction to that with, I can’t do a push up. Sure you can! There are many different levels of push ups. You can start up right, doing a push up against a wall. Doing a push up with the body parallel to the floor would be a more advanced version. There is a level of push up out there for everyone. The same goes for the lower body. Step up, squats and lunges can be performed with both legs or only one leg. Those should all be mastered before adding an external load, such as with a machine. When performing any of those three exercises you are working almost all the muscles in the lower body and using your core to stabilize. By performing exercises such as those noted above you master movements not just exercises. Once you have a solid foundation, only then can you build on top of it (add an external weight). Your bodyweight should be the first tool we think about in a workout program. The second should be something to enhance bodyweight training such as, a medicine ball, balance (Airex) pad and or stability ball. An effective quality program should consist of push-ups, squats and step-ups. Other exercises can be added in as necessary, but don’t forget about your solid foundation.

BOCA WEST 33 | CHAIRMAN’S LETTER

Y NOW YOU SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED YOUR 2019/20 DUES PACK ET. I would like to thank our budget chairman and vice-chairman, Bob Winikoff and Joel Macher, as well as Kathy Campbell, Director of Finance, Kris Nielsen, Controller, and Matthew Linderman for delivering a budget that will enable the Club to continue to provide the quality of services we at Boca West have become accustomed to, while at the same time preserve its financial health. The budget was approved by the Board of Governors at its June meeting increasing social dues by $470. As Bob Winikoff indicated in his letter accompanying the dues packet, three areas unto themselves accounted for the net increase in year over year budgeted costs; that is (i) an increase in the BWMA assessment, (II) increases in Property/Liability and medical insurance, and (iii) increased employee wages, benefits and housing and transportation. Other line items in the budget showed increases and decreases that, in the aggregate, netted to a negligible difference from that which was budgeted last year. There is one area of concern however on the revenue side that needs to be addressed, and that is catering. The presentation to the membership which gained the approval for the Golf and Activities Center anticipated that with the opening of the new building and its related restaurants in 2016, the Club would be presented with the opportunity to increase the number of bookings for catering events at Panache. In seizing this opportunity, based on the assumption that Prime Cut and MyPi would provide sufficient evening dining venues to meet Member’s requirements, several catering events were booked in Panache on Saturday evenings in the height of the season within close proximity of each other. A number of members complained suggesting that MyPi was not a suitable dining alternative to Panache (particularly when having guests) in part due to its informal ambiance, and that reservations at Prime Cut were not as readily available and the menu was too expensive. Management therefore responded by reducing the number of dates available for future bookings. The results are as follows: Last year (fiscal 2017/18) catering’s contribution to our bottom line was equivalent to approximately $165 per member in annual social dues. We forecast to finish this year (2018/19) with catering contributing the equivalent of approximately $75 in annual social dues per member, and based on the bookings of events to date, the budget for 2019/20 anticipates little if any growth in the catering business. As you know, we plan to seek approval from the membership later this year for an extensive expansion to the Sports Center beginning sometime in 2021. Among many other benefits, this expansion should provide a more elaborate alternative for membership dining at MyPi, which will be more conducive to entertaining guests on weekends. As such, the Board has asked Management to be more aggressive in booking future catering events. While it is important to operate the Club for the benefit of the entire membership, it is also our responsibility to do so in a fiscally responsible way. I know we can accomplish both; that is offering alternative dinner venues on weekdays and weekends both with and without guests for all of our members, while at the same time taking advantage of our multi-faceted infrastructure in order to keep our annual social dues in check. As always, we thank all of the members for their patience and understanding as we move forward. Nominating Committee The nominating committee, chaired by Steve Forman, is attempting to get an early start in identifying the future leaders of the Club. If you are interested in being considered for nomination to run for the Board, contact Steve regarding the process and timing. Enjoy the rest of the summer, stay safe, and I look forward to seeing you in the fall for another great season. Howard Liebman Howard Liebman Chairman of the Board
