LOVES CADILLACS & LA SALLES c o v e r Heavenly sent ‘47 A genuine Don Lee delivery! August 2014 finzOfficial magazine of The Cadillac La Salle Club of NZ [Inc] formed 1973 www.cadillacclubofnz.org Sub-compact Winner 11 & 12 6 5 8178 9 Hi all. As I type this, it is the coldest day of the year (so far) from the beautiful Bay of Plenty. A dusting of snow on the Kaimai ranges and a wind chill factor of just 7c for much of the day, whilst a good dose of snow fell in a number of 4 3 places here in the North Island - winter indeed. So it’s great to reminess from just a few months back when the temps were seven times what they were today at a balmy 35c and made even more special when you are riding ‘shot-gun’ in a so original ‘47 Caddy owned by member and the very generous Chris Blakely. It was by accident that yours truly got to ride in my favourite ‘Perth Caddy’. You see, on the day of the Cave and lighthouse visit, a handful of us elected to go by bus (actually we missed out 16 on a ride). Just a kilometre down the road we spotted 3 Caddies parked up on the side of the highway where a group of men’s heads were stuck under the hood of a gorgeous ‘57 Eldorado Brougham. We stopped to check out what was happening and ascertained the Brougham’s tranny was mis-behaving. The cool-down helped and after maybe half an hour the Brougham was on the road again, meantime it was suggested the small number of bus passengers might like to cruise in style (the ‘Cadillac way!!!’) and we had a choice of a ‘53 Eldorado, the Brougham or the ‘47. I chose the later and I am glad I did. Read about my amazing journey that day in a nearly 70-year-young icon! The second instalment of the WOW museum is worth a read, love that ‘57 pictured at right . 5 Our Perth adventure continues with a light house and cave exploration this 12 month whilst we begin Part 2 of the History of La Salle. Befitting winter is a 50s Caddy ad with everyone wrapt up warm and there’s a “dash of class” on the ‘Tail Lights page’ (pun intended!) The 2014 Cad Nats and AGM accomodation and Ferry crossing details are printed here. Well counting down to the AGM, come a few months time and we will no doubt see a new Governance team - Pres; VP; Treasurer and I hear there could be a few Regional Delegate spaces filled as well. I hope you have your nomination forms completed. Grant is staying on as Secretary and I am happy to remain as Editor is you are happy for me to do so? The November edition of FINZ will carry all the details of the new team. Lastly congrats to our great Aussie CLC mate, Peter Ratcliffe who is this years recepient of the 2014 Yann Saunders International Activity Award. What a great honour to be bestowed on you Peter for all your hard CLC work over many decades! 7 Until next issue, Ron 14 Some images on this page courtesy of World of Wearable Art & Classic Cars Museum, Nelson Editor: Ron Melville recipient of (CLC) The Yann Saunders International Activity Award 2013 Contributions: Send to: [email protected] The Editior reserves the right to accept or reject any contributions. New Deadline is 20th of each month 20 2finz www.cadillacclubofnz.org Melbourne and Busselton - here we come! Steve and Ron’s big adventure... On April 4th, Steve Gill - BOP Regional Delegate and Ron Melville 3 - FINZ Editor (both from Mt. Maunganui) landed in Melbourne to check out the 2014 Australian Cadillac Nationals. This is their story: Our story continues here in Busselton. With the exception of Perth, our lowly ‘no star’ accomodation continues and it is true ‘you get what you pay for!’ Still it’s only a place to put our heads and us Kiwis can cope! Next outing is a trip to a historic light house and nearby caves not far from Margaret River town. It’s 100% pure Ozzie scenery - the gum trees, the red clay - even the odd kangaroo! Steve and I choose different routes today but me and a few locals miss the rides so we are taken by bus coach. Five minutes down the road we come across an Eldo Brougham with it’s hood up. Long-story short (because you will read the rest elsewhere), I am lucky enough to ride in an amazing ‘47 and spend the whole day with cruising nearly 70 years past! The light house is amazing and well worth the visit. We then venture more than ten stories under ground to explore the historic caves. You have to be reasonably fit and agile and not suffer narrow or dark places. The temperature dropped about 10c below ground but worth seeing. Afternoon tea was spent in Margaret River town itself at an amazing eatery. In convoy on the way back home to ‘base camp’, the Brougham’s tranny finally gave up and the it got ‘flat-decked’ all the way back to Perth where we would see it again in company with a collection of Caddies in a ‘shed tour’ that really was the ‘cherry on the top’ for this tour. Enjoy the pictures - a visual memory for Steve and me and the reason why all you Kiwi members should come along to these events! Ron (Ed) More than 110 years young, this was built of solid block stone to guard against the elements and time. It still functions and we saw it working. We had a guided tour and history lesson at the same time. Note the weather report - beware of snakes! I had to climb a big tree to get this shot above! Amazing views of the Indian Ocean and Geographe Bay were awesome. 3finz www.cadillacclubofnz.org Melbourne and Busselton - here we come! Steve and Ron’s big adventure... On April 4th, Steve Gill - BOP Regional Delegate and Ron Melville - FINZ Editor (both from Mt. Maunganui) landed in Melbourne to check out the 2014 Australian Cadillac Nationals. This is their story: The ‘Ngilgi’cave tour was a real highlight. Look at these photos which turned out great. This cave was was discovered over a 100 years ago by a local who saw a ‘hole in the ground’ and decided to climb in and have a look! Then we stopped off at the scenic ‘Canals on the coast’. Three old Caddies, it really did look like ‘parking up at Malibu beach! (no, never been there!) Until next month’s continuing episode. Ron Look at the height of these stairs and looking back up into the daylight. There was a large collection of stones that can be found here in the area - Jasper etc. Canal walk was very scenic. The ‘park-up’ was a photo-shoot to behold and will make for a great future photo essay. Ed 4finz www.cadillacclubofnz.org Following on last month’s first part, we continue the contribution from our Anne and great input from Jahmiel. This is a ‘must see’ place to visit on out South Island tour. Let’s pray for nice weather as we pull into Cadillac Drive! Another instalment next month with more cool pics!
