I noticed photos Belinda had of some of their young patients holding these cuddily stuffed ani- camls. Belinda explained how, unbeknownst to any of us, Linda Cobarrubias had come up with this idea of creating a Treasure Box full of stuffed animals for the sometimes anxious kids that come to the clinic for treatment. According to Wells, this has been a very successful element added to the clinic.

After driving through a patch of drizzle on the way to the rendezvous in Redlands, the “Porsche Driving Gods” smiled, and the weather cleared for the twisty tour to the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary and Pioneertown. Hwy 38 is a “Porsche Road” with many twists and turns, and best of all we caught only one slow moving truck who immediately pulled over to let all 16 cars pass. After crossing the 8400 foot Onyx Summit, there was a steady serpentine descent past Big Bear Lake to the California high desert destination of the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary. (www. wolfmoutainsanctuary.net) Wolf Mountain is a Federally Licensed Rescue and Reha- bilitation Facility that offers interactive wolf education. Many of the wolves and wolf hybrids that have been rescued as young pups go on to be trained as drug or bomb sniffing animals. Their sense of smell is many times more acute than a dog. After learn- ing about wolf habits and habitat, it was time to meet them face to face. Being very social animals, they love to nuzzle and sniff. In the wild such as Yellowstone, the reintroduction of the wolf stabilized the deer and elk population that had over-grazed the valleys and river banks so beaver and otters have returned. After that it was an easy drive across the High Desert to Pioneertown. It was built as a Western movie set in the 1940’s by Roy Rogers, Tom Mix and other western movie stars. These were complete buildings not just facades so many remain today as stores or exhibits. The most popular is the “world famous” Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace restaurant and music venue. The food was good, the portions large, and the sound check by the band that was playing that night was loud. (https:// www.pappyandharriets.com)
