Introduction Both Harry Baldwin and Thomas Fry proposed to travel to California to undertake a field trip to primarily study the genus Quercus, as well as other major tree species in a variety of habitats, in addition to attending the 9th International Oak Society Conference at U.C Davis Arboretum. The field trip was an organised pre-tour which was led by Stewart Winchester, a dendrologist who is very familiar with the flora of the west coast of the USA. The week long tour took participants around some of the most species rich areas of California, from the coastal redwoods in the north, to the dry oak chaparral savannas of the Sierras and to the mountainous regions of Inyo Mountains. In just a week, we were able to explore these oak rich habitats, understand the ecology, and ask why many Californian environments rely on oaks and conifers. Following the tour, we attended the triennial 9th International oak Society Conference, which took place at UC Davis Arboretum over three consecutive days. With over 35 speakers varying in topics, ranging from climate change, pest and disease, oaks in practical horticulture and arboriculture, conservation and scientific research (among many others), allowed us to gain a broad insight into the importance of oaks worldwide in several different capacities. This not only allowed us to improve our knowledge in the genus Quercus, but also allowed us to undertake some important networking opportunities with oak experts and enthusiasts from all over the world. We hope that this report demonstrates the importance of oaks in the Californian landscape, as well as portraying the great opportunity we had as well as the knowledge gained from the trip. We thoroughly recommend travelling to the west coast to gain an insight into this fascinating landscape as there is a huge amount to learn and see in a relatively small area. Aims and Objectives: 1. Coder, Professor of Tree Biology & Health Care / University Hill Fellow University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources Quercus (oak) is the largest tree genus in temperate and sub-tropical areas of the Northern Hemisphere with an extensive distribution. (Denk et.al. 2010) Oaks are the most dominant trees of North America both in species number and biomass. (Hipp et.al. 2018) The three North America oak groups (white, red / black, and golden-cup) represent roughly 60% (~255) of the ~435 species within the Quercus genus worldwide. (Hipp et.al. 2018; McVay et.al. 2017a) Oak group development over time helped determine current species, and can suggest relationships which foster hybridization. The red / black and white oaks developed during a warm phase in global climate at high latitudes in what today is the boreal forest zone. From this northern location, both oak groups spread together southward across the continent splitting into a large eastern United States pathway, and much smaller western and far western paths. Both species groups spread into the eastern United States, then southward, and continued into Mexico and Central America as far as Columbia. (Hipp et.al. 2018) Today, Mexico is considered the world center of oak diversity. (Hipp et.al. 2018) Figure 1 shows genus, sub-genus and sections of Quercus (oak). History of Oak Species Groups Oaks developed under much different climates and environments than today. By examining how oaks developed and diversified into small, closely related groups, the native set of Georgia oak species can be better appreciated and understood in how they are related, share gene sets, or hybridize.

Old-growth western juniper stands that established in presettlement times (before the 1870s) occur primarily on sites of low productivity such as claypan soils, rimrock, outcrops, the edges of mesas, and upper slopes. They are generally very open and often had sparse understories. Western juniper has established and spread onto low slopes and valleys in many areas, especially areas formerly dominated by mountain big sagebrush. These postsettlement stands (woodland transitional communities) are denser than most presettlement and old-growth woodlands. They have substantial shrub understories in early to midsuccession. Western juniper establishes from seed. Seed cones are first produced around 20 years of age, but few are produced until at least 50 years of age. Mature western junipers produce seeds nearly every year, although seed production is highly variable across sites and years.
