That was the origin of our “Power 30 Healthcare” package: We were personally and professionally moved by the grit and determination of Long Island’s healthcare network. We wanted to record the work of top leaders who had to make life-and-death decisions in the early days of the pandemic. We wanted to learn about unheralded scientists and educators searching for breakthroughs to combat COVID-19, volunteering their time and expertise to this vital, often dangerous work. We also wanted to credit On behalf of the thousands who have trusted Gurwin those who kept the region healthy so that residents would to provide 5-star quality care when they need it not enter into the high risk category, and succumb to most, thank you for your lifelong dedication to the COVID and other illness. health and well being of Long Island’s seniors. MICHAEL DOWLING PRESIDENT AND CEO NORTHWELL HEALTH ichael Dowling is one of healthcare’s most in uential voices, taking a stand on societal issues that many health system CEOs shy away from, such as gun violence and immigration. As president and CEO of Northwell Health, he leads a clinical, academic and research enterprise with a work- M force of more than 72,000 and annual revenue of $13.5 billion. Northwell is the largest healthcare provider and private employer in New York State, caring for more than two million people annually through a vast network of nearly 800 outpatient facilities, including 220 primary care practices, 52 urgent care cen- ters, home care, rehabilitation and end-of-life programs, and 23 hospitals. Northwell pursues pioneering research at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and an approach to medical education highlighted by the Zucker School of Medicine, the Hofstra Northwell School of Grad- uate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies - one of the nation’s largest medical residency and fellow- ship programs. Dowling’s leadership took center stage during the COVID-19 pandemic. His forward thinking kept Northwell prepared with adequate personal protective equipment and able to create capacity on the y while still pursuing innovation, all while treating more COVID patients (76,000) than any other health system in the United States. He worked in lockstep with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to assist with the state’s battle against the pandemic. Dowling detailed these experiences in his latest book, “Leading Through a Pandemic: The Inside Story of Humanity, Innovation, and Lessons Learned During the COVID-19 Crisis.” Among his achievements navigating the crisis, Dowling invested $5 million in February for critical PPE and other equipment, including ventilators and lab supplies, to help manage patient surges and keep Northwell team members safe. He redeployed more than 1,400 clinicians out of their specialties to help those working the front lines and innovated when needed. When

Northwell Health 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment: Queens County Assessment Encompassing the following Northwell Health Hospital: Long Island Jewish Forest Hills 1 Queens County Health Indicator Status Since 2016 CHNA The 2016-2019 Implementation Plan activities have had an impact in improving and meeting New York State Prevention Agenda Objectives that were related to health disparities, chronic disease, safe environments, maternal child health, STD/HIV, vaccine preventable diseases, healthcare-associated infections and behavioral health as shown below. Since 2018, Northwell Health has delivered over 13,000 community health programs and over 22,000 health screenings. Examples of interventions that helped achieved these goals include robust chronic disease and cancer screening programs; implementation of culturally relevant evidence-based chronic disease self-management education; prevention of childhood obesity through school- based projects as well as promotion of policies and practices in support of breastfeeding; creation of community environments that promote and support healthy food and beverage choices and physical activity; elimination of exposure to secondhand smoke and prevention of the initiation of tobacco use by youth, especially among low socioeconomic status (SES) populations and the promotion of tobacco cessation, especially among low SES populations and those with poor mental health; and strengthened infrastructure to promote mental, emotional and behavioral wellbeing. However, the burden of health disparities, chronic disease, obesity and behavioral health issues is still present as demonstrated below by the indicators that have not met the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Prevention Agenda Objectives and/or have worsened indicating the need to continue to primarily address the 2019-2024 priority agenda items of Prevent Chronic Disease and Promote Well Being and Prevent Mental and Substance Use Disorders as well as including strategies that can improve other priority areas as well.
