YOGHURT - The words “live and active cultures” on the container mean that your yogurt has probiotics, beneficial bugs that live in your digestive tract and help crowd out harmful microorganisms that can cause intestinal infections. But many varieties now also contain special strains of probiotics meant to help regulate your digestion or strengthen your immune system. One serving of yoghurt is a significant source of potassium, phosphorous, riboflavin, iodine, zinc, and vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). Yoghurt also contains B12, which maintains red blood cells and helps keep your nervous system functioning properly. Eating more yoghurt can help close the nutrient gap: An eight-ounce serving contains 1.4 micrograms of the vitamin, about 60 percent of what adult women need daily. !!! much has been written about Petra, but nothing really prepares you for this amazing place. It has to be seen to be believed. jordanrocks

Once a flourishing city in the heart of the Near East, Petra, the Ancient City was forgotten for centuries by the outside world, even veiled in mystery. Situated halfway I’d never really thought of going on holiday for the specific 1 million), the town remains a modest little place, with small purpose of looking at big bits of rock, because that’s really convenience stores, Arabic restaurants and many low budget between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, rests a what Petra is after all - exquisitely carved but still rock at backpacker hostels. Take in the view The only entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge, across the valley as you walk down over 1km in length, which is flanked on either side by soaring, 80m towards the Siq. high cliffs. Just walking through the Siq is an experience in itself with the colours and formations of the rocks looming overhead, horse carts gliding past as their clip clopping shoes echo all about you. It’s all quite surreal and as you near the end of the Siq, a vertical crack of light emerges and you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) – that of Indiana Jones fame.

The crack opens up into a vast clearing and towering above right in front of you is the enormous rock face with the Treasury carved from it. It’s impossible for any photograph to set the scale and it’s not until you have stood beneath it and asked the question in your head, the thing every visitor must wonder, “How on earth did they do that?”, that you finally understand why it is a wonder of the world. (Voted as the seventh wonder by over 100 million people). And that’s only the beginning of the big old bits of rock.

The unique city, was carved into the sheer rock faces by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in Petra more than 2000 years ago, turning it into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, and Rome. It’s is an awe-inspiring experience to see it in the flesh. The massive Treasury façade, 30m wide and 43m high, carved out of the sheer, dusky pink rock-face dwarfs everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabataean king and represents the engineering genius of these ancient people and as many as 30,000 people may have occupied it during this period. A large earthquake in 363 A.D. though destroyed at least half of the city and it never recovered from this destruction.

Petra was first established sometime around the 6th century BC, by the Nabataean Arabs, a nomadic tribe who settled in the area and laid the foundations of a commercial empire that extended into Syria. Despite successive attempts by the Seleucid king Antigonus, the Roman emperor Pompey and Herod the Great to bring Petra under the control of their respective empires, Petra remained largely in Nabataean hands until around 100AD, when the Romans took over. It was still inhabited during the Byzantine period, when the former Roman Empire moved its focus east to Constantinople, but declined in importance thereafter.

The Crusaders constructed a fort there in the 12th century, but soon withdrew, leaving Petra to the local people until the early 19th century, when it was rediscovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.

As you enter the Petra valley you will be overwhelmed by its natural beauty and outstanding architectural achievements. I’m 38 39 June 2011 n Issue 4 June 2011 n Issue 4

not sure what I expected but I hadn’t imagined much more than the usual images of the iconic Treasury featured on every promo for Petra. There are literally hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings - unlike the houses, which were destroyed mostly by earthquakes, the tombs were carved to last throughout the afterlife and 500 have survived, empty but bewitching as you file past their dark openings. Here also is a massive Nabataean- built, Roman-style theatre, which could seat 3,000 people in its day. There are obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets, and high above, overlooking the valley, is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery – a flight of 800 rock cut steps takes you there.

The climb is not for the feint-hearted and unless you are relatively fit you will struggle. But take your time and the well-worn pathway of winding stone steps will reward you with some stunning views of the valley below along the way, and of the smaller but more accessible carving of the Monastery once you reach the top. Your hosts at the Monastery tea shop, should you indulge in a refreshing cuppa, must be encouraged to chat as they are happy to pass the time of day with visitors - one even revealing his birthplace to be the very cave we were huddling around the fire in, taking the chill from our fingers and the icy wind blowing outside.

Within the site there are also two excellent museums; the Petra Archaeological Museum, and the Petra Nabataean Museum both of which represent finds from excavations in the Petra region and an insight into Petra’s colourful past. You’ll also come across several artisans from the town of Wadi Musa and a nearby Bedouin settlement have set up small stalls selling local handicrafts, such as pottery and Bedouin jewellery, and bottles of striated multi- coloured sands from the area. (One such elderly gentleman selling goat horns and ancient coins, goat bells and decorated shells even surprisingly claimed to be from Abu Dhabi).

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea must make the list of things to do before you die. It’s about 200km from Petra, is 407m below sea level, and flanked by mountains to the east and the rolling hills of Jerusalem to the west, giving it an almost other-worldly beauty especially when you see the mirror-like surface of the water reflecting the landscape to perfection.
