NOVICE

This grade is a pre-cursor to Beginner (Bun) Grade. It is only available to a dancer in their first open (i.e. not a class feis) for each particular dance.

CONTENT OF WORK – NOVICE AND BEGINNER (BUN) GRADE

Basic Work e.g.: 2,3s, sevens, heels, points, skips, knocks, basic trebles.

Beginners Reel, Light Jig, Single Jig, slip Jig, Treble Jig to consist of a circle and side and steps up to required length of dance.

PRIMARY (TUS)

CONTENT OF WORK:

Basic Work e.g.: 2,3s, sevens, heels, points, skips, knocks, basic trebles, up and over

Plus difficult movements such as boxes, drums, long kicks, cross keys, rocks.

One or two difficult movements can be done per step, for example cannot perform two difficult movements in succession but can perform two difficult movements in a step with basic movements in between.

No, pivots, twists, no syncopated rhythm.

Light dances to consist of: lead, side steps or 16 bar lead and 2 steps up to required length of dance

MEAN GRAD 1 (This grade is optional)

Only open to dancers who have never been placed in top 25 in any National Girls Championship or in the Top 25% in their respective State Girls Championship and open to dancers who have never won a National or State Boys Championship.

1. A section must have a minimum of 2 schools entered for an upgrade to apply.

2. A section must have a minimum of 5 competitors entered for an upgrade to apply. Each state is able to adjust that number up.

3. Unless rule 7 applies Dancers aged 5 years and under are not to be graded and Dancers aged 6 years will only be graded to Primary (Tus Grad).

4. If there are 20 or more competitors in any one section that section will be split at discretion of each branch.

5. The number of times a dancer wins a section of less than 5 dancers and 2 schools shall be determined by each state for a grading to apply.

6. Dancers can compete in sections they are not graded out of. This means a dancer can compete in Beginners (Bun Grad) or Primary (Tus Grad) even if they are dancing open grade.

7. Sub minor 7 years and under and 8 years open championship winners are graded out of the 3 dances of the championship but are eligible to dance in other grades for other dances. Any other open level championship winner aged 9 years and above are graded to Ard Grad for all dances.

8. An Open graded (Ard Grad) dancer who has not won a particular dance for 2 years can apply to go back to Intermediate (Mean Grad) for that dance.

9. A dancer who competes interstate is subject to the grading rule of region they are competing in and the grade registrar of that region is to notify the registrar of the region the dancer is registered in of any graded result.

MAKE UP RULE

To be included in Grading Rules / General Rules:

Make up, leg tan and wigs will not be permitted for any dancer in Novice and Beginner (Bun) for 11 years and under.

Make up and leg tan will not be permitted for any dancer in Primary (Tus) for 11 years and under.

In all other grades, including elementary, intermediate (Mean) and Open (Ard) – dancers of age 9 years and under are not permitted to wear Make-up (including false eyelashes and / or tanner on the face) in either solo or team (ceili / choreography) competitions unless they are dancing in a higher age group. However they are permitted tanning products on legs.

COSTUME RULE

Rule 5.1.1 of Rules of CLRG for Teachers and Adjudicators changed to rule below effective 1.2.20

5.1.1 Costume Length: Length of costumes must adhere to principles of modesty and enable dancers to safely execute their movements and steps. Adjudicators who determine a costume to be too short or to lack modesty may ask a competitor to change into black tights (of a denier not less than 70 per cent) in order for the dancer to continue in the competition. When wearing body suits with skirts (commonly known as black-out attire) black tights (of a denier (not) less than 70) must be worn from the age of 14 and above. Effective date: 1st February, 2020.
