    Aesthetic Apparatus Midwesterners Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski of Aesthetic Apparatus have carved a niche as designers of iconic band posters for the likes of the Meat Puppets, Art Chantry, Frank Black the Ames Brothers and about a zillion more. Over the years, their limited edition, screen-printed concert posters and art prints have created a certain aura about their work. Their growing reputation has landed them gigs for Blue Q, Stella Artois, Harper Collins, American Cancer Society and Criterion Collection, and their work has been featured in Print, Step Into Design, Communication Arts, Creative Review, and Rolling Stone (among others), as well as in the recent Chronicle Books rock art Bible, "The Art of Modern Rock." Kinsey Los Angeles-based Kinsey is a powerhouse of the graffiti-turned-fine-art set. His paintings and designs tend to find analogies for human culture and conflict in the natural and animal worlds, and the resulting images are both beautiful and unsettling. Coming of age just before the explosion of computer-based design and being trained as a fine artist in painting and drawing, it's perhaps natural that Kinsey's art has its roots in a painterly, "by hand" aesthetic that shines through even in works where the computer plays an important role. D. // BENICÀSSIM El Rototom Sunsplash se abre de nuevo este año para recibir a Sean Paul, uno de los artistas dancehall más importantes de la historia, que actuará por primera vez en el festival reggae, que este año se celebra en Benicàssim del 16 al 23 de agosto, el miércoles día 20. Con más de seis millones de copias vendidas en todo el mundo de su disco ‘Dutty Rock’, editado en 2002 y ganador del Grammy al Mejor Álbum de Reggae en 2004, Sean Paul ha contribuido de forma determinante a abrir nuevos mercados para la música jamaicana. Un triunfo que ha sido posible gracias a superhits como ‘Get Busy’, ‘Gimme the Light ‘y ‘I’m still in love with you’, temas que todavía hoy en día se bailan en las pistas de todo el mundo. Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion.     Finding Love in Hopeless Places: Complex Relationality and Impossible Heterosexuality in Popular Music Videos by Pink and Rihanna Marc Lafrance and Lori Burns KEYWORDS: Pink, Rihanna, music video, popular music, cross-domain analysis, relationality, heterosexuality, liquid love ABSTRACT: This paper presents an interpretive approach to music video analysis that engages with critical scholarship in the areas of popular music studies, gender studies and cultural studies. Two key examples—Pink’s pop video “Try” and Rihanna’s electropop video “We Found Love”—allow us to examine representations of complex human relationality and the paradoxical challenges of heterosexuality in late modernity. We explore Zygmunt Bauman’s notion of “liquid love” in connection with the selected videos. A model for the analysis of lyrics, music, and images according to cross-domain parameters ( thematic, spatial & temporal, relational, and gestural ) facilitates the interpretation of the expressive content we consider. Our model has the potential to be applied to musical texts from the full range of musical genres and to shed light on a variety of social and cultural contexts at both the micro and macro levels. To illustrate the relevance of our approach, we have selected two songs by mainstream female artists who offer compelling reflections on the nature of heterosexual love and the challenges it poses for both men and women.
