Issue 02 – 2013 Journal –Peer Reviewed ZOYA STREET Gamesbrief [email protected] Polygons and practice in Skies of Arcadia This paper features research carried out at the Victoria and Albert Museum into the design history of Sega’s 2000 Dreamcast title, Skies of Arcadia (released in Ja- pan as Eternal Arcadia). It was released by Overworks, a subsidiary of Sega, at an interesting point in Japanese computer game history. A new generation of video game consoles was in its infancy, and much speculation in the industry sur- rounded how networked gaming and large, open, tridimensional game worlds would change game design in the years ahead. Skies of Arcadia is a game about sky pirates, set in a world where islands and continents foat in the sky. I became interested in this game because it was praised in critical reviews for the real sense of place in its visual design. It is a Jap- anese Role Playing Game (JRPG), meaning that gameplay focuses on exploring a series of spaces and defeating enemies in turn-based, probabilistic battles using a system similar to that established by tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons. This research is based on interviews with the producer Shuntaro Tanaka and lead designer Toshiyuki Mukaiyama, user reviews submitted online over the past 10 plus years, and historically informed design analysis. It is grounded in a broader study of the networks of production and consumption that surrounded and co-produced the Dreamcast as a cultural phenomenon, technological agent and played experience. Through design analysis, oral history and archival research, in this paper I will complicate notions of tridimensionality by placing a three dimensional RPG in a broader network of sociotechnical relationships. -

※ 본 아티클은 CMP MEDIA LLC와의 라이선스 계약에 의해 국문으로 제공됩 니다 일본 RPG 게임 입문: 필수게임 20 선 (A Japanese RPG Primer: The Essential 20) 커트 칼라타(Kurt Kalata) 가마수트라 등록일(2008. 3. 19) http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3581/a_japanese_rpg_primer_the_.php [일본의 롤플레잉게임(role-playing game/RPG)은 게임 개발자들에게 게임플레이와 스토리텔링 측면에서 연구할 가지가 의외로 중요한 장르이다. 가마수트라는 이번 기회를 빌어 일본 게임 역사상 최고의 RPG 를 선정하여 ‘필수게임 20 선’으로 소개하고자 한다.] 서양의 RPG 와 일본의 RPG 는 둘 사이에 나타나는 차이점이 크기 때문인지, 마치 다른 장르의 게임처럼 보이기도 한다. 서양의 RPG 는 보통 “아무데나 가서 아무거나 해라”는 식의 성격을 지니는 별다른 틀이 없는 게임플레이를 선호하는 편이다. 반면에 일본의 RPG 들은 이야기식 구성과 전투 시스템에 중점을 두고 게이머가 캐릭터의 역할 수행에 쉽게 빠져들 수 있도록 하는 스토리의 진행을 중요시 한다. 사실 일본의 RPG 게임들은 뜬금없이 갑자기 등장한 것은 아니다. 그들의 뿌리를 거슬러 올라가면 80 년대의 초기 미국 컴퓨터 RPG 게임들로부터 그 흔적을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 울티마(Ultima)와 위저드리(Wizardry)는 당시 가장 인기를 끌었던 게임들 중 하나로 꼽히곤 했다. 두 게임 모두 열성적인 일본의 게이머들의 지지를 받긴 했지만, 어린 나이의 일반적인 콘솔 게임 사용자들이 쉽게 다가가기엔 어느 정도의 거리감이 있었다. 그런 이유로 에닉스의 게임 개발자였던 유지 호리이(Yuji Horii)는 흥미로운 시도를 해보기로 마음을 먹었다. 그리하여 울티마(특히 3 탄과 4 탄)의 필드 탐색(overhead exploration) 형식과 위저드리의 1 인칭 메뉴 기반의 전투 시스템을 결합하여 드래곤 퀘스트(Dragon Quest)가 탄생하게 된 것이다. 1986 년 닌텐도의 패미콤 용으로 발매된 드래곤 퀘스트는 엄청난 반향을 일으키며, 후에 등장하는 수많은 모방작들의 귀감이 되었다. 드래곤 퀘스트의 모방작들 대부분에 대해선 특별히 언급할 필요는 없다고 본다. -

Smith, Steven Anderson and Matthew Alt DARSHANA JAYEMANNE The interplay between the Japanese and Western game industries has been one of the most fruitful mass cultural exchanges of the past few decades. The circulation of gaming products between the two contexts has seen both brilliant successes and dismal failures, but also more than a few unlikely felicities. Shigeru Miyamoto, in his search for an English appellation for Mario’s disgruntled simian antagonist, hit upon the now iconic Donkey Kong. Many gamers will remember wondering how they could set up a match against Shen Long, trembling at the stark realisation that “Someone set us up the bomb,” and taking comfort in Barry Burton’s affirmation of Jill Valentine’s prowess in Resident Evil (Capcom 1997): “Jill, here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.” Though his syntactical choices may lead one to certain uncharitable conclusions about Barry, his foresight and canny allocation of limited team resources was in fact indispensable to his colleague’s survival into the game’s sequels. By the time of the GameCube remake (Capcom 2002), Barry had improved his communication skills considerably. While diegetically this may be attributed to robust training policy reform at the Racoon City Police Department, in an extra-diegetic sense can be seen as indicative of broader trends in localisation standards. -

Some of these accounts conflict with one another, so I try to present as coherent an account of the history as I can here. I do not claim that everything in this paper is true. Before Final Fantasy VII, console-based role-playing games (RPGs) were still a niche market, played only by a dedicated few who were willing to endure the long wait for the few games to cross the Pacific and onto American soil. Then came Final Fantasy VII in the September of 1997, wowing everybody with its amazing graphics, story and gameplay. The game single-handedly lifted console-based RPGs out of their little niche into the mainstream, selling millions of copies worldwide, and made Squaresoft a household name in video games.
