A few fine poems in this tradition were written by some of the major English poets: Sidney, Spenser, Donne, Jonson, and Herrick. The genre was important for only three decades in England before it fell into the hands of minor poets and literary hacks. When the English Renaissance poets took up the epithalamic genre, it had a two-thousand year old tradition behind it, a tradition which began in Greece, flourished for a time in Rome, then disappeared until the Renaissance, when epithalamla were written in Italian, French, Spanish, Latin, and English poetry. After the Renaissance, the classical tradition lost its influence on English epithalamia, and not until the twentieth century have major English poets written marriage songs patterned on the classical models. ^To avoid confusion which might arise from the several forms of this word ending in -urn, -a, -ie, -ies, -on, and -ons, the Latin forms, epithalamium and epithalamla, will be used throughout this thesis except in quotations and titles where the original spelling will be raaintained. -

But most importantly, these poems must be read as political performances, bids at self-representation, performances whose success or failure depended on the courtly audiences that consumed them. Both Wyatt and Surrey mobilized the humanist rhetorical traditions they learned as schoolboys to craft lines designed to garner the attention of influential members at court (maybe even Henry VIII himself). If the poems could not soften the heart of Henry VIII, they might, at the very least, serve to soften the hearts of the courtly members of their social circles. -

In his rendering of the first three books of Gayantrra and Paritupel (five books, 1532- I 564) Urquhart consistently outdoes his original in verbal exuberance and bawdiness-he is a more “Rabelaisian” writer than Rabelais. Con- sequently the translation has grown in favor as “Rabelaisian” has developed into a term of critical approbation. Alastair Fowler’s judge- ment is representative of opinion over the last century: “Urquhart’s outstanding achievement . captured for our literature a domain that Sterne and Joycc h;ive since inhabited without noticeably exhausting its resources.”’ Yet if Urquhart’s Rabelais is testimony to “the greatest period of translation in English literature, one that had included Golding’s Ovid, Harington’s Ariosto, Chapman’s Homer, Florio’s Montaigne and the Authorized Version,” then it was forty years late.‘ Thomason records buying Urquhart’s version of books onc and two-issued separately but apparently simultaneously-on June 15, 1633, almost two months after Croniwell’s dissolution of the “Rump” I’arliament. Looking for Lovelace: Identity, Style and Inheritance in the Poetry of the Interregnum Thesis Submitted by Dosia Reichardt, BA (Hons) James Cook, BA York in September 2003 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Humanities Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences James Cook University Abstract This thesis discusses the work of the Cavalier poet Richard Lovelace in two contexts in particular: first, within the political and cultural constraints operating during the period of the English Civil War and the Interregnum; second, against the background provided by the work of contemporary, often obscure, poets whose aesthetic and political attitudes help illuminate Lovelace’s own. The study examines a number of apparent paradoxes in the work and status of poets in Lovelace’s milieu. The desire to fashion an individual and lasting literary persona in the mould of Ben Jonson, for example, conflicts with the practice of circulating essentially un-authored lyrics within an educated and exclusive male coterie. Lovelace’s amatory verse is viewed through the prism of contemporary attitudes towards female constancy, but also through seventeenth-century poets’ habitual borrowings from Latin and Greek sources. Lovelace’s attempt at a lengthy pastoral partakes of the cultural poetics of nostalgia for a vanished Court and the genres associated with it. His interest in music and the fine arts inspires many poems which comment on contemporary politics while participating in an immemorial debate about art and artificiality versus nature. His prison and drinking songs have earned him a place in anthologies of poetry as a minor classic, but they also crystallize a conjunction of genres peculiar to the years between 1640 and 1660. -

Woudhuysen and Dr. Alison Shell ii John Donne and the Conway Papers A Biographical and Bibliographical Study of Poetry and Patronage in the Seventeenth Century This thesis investigates a seventeenth-century manuscript archive, the Conway Papers, in order to explain the relationship between the archive’s owners and John Donne, the foremost manuscript poet of the century. An evaluation of Donne’s legacy as a writer and thinker requires an understanding of both his medium of publication and the collectors and agents who acquired and circulated his work. The Conway Papers were owned by Edward, first Viscount Conway, Secretary of State to James I and Charles I, and Conway’s son. Both men were also significant collectors of printed books. The archive as it survives, mainly in the British Library and National Archives, includes around 300 literary manuscripts ranging from court entertainments to bawdy ballads. This thesis fully evaluates the collection as a whole for the first time, including its complex history. I ask three principal questions: what the Conway Papers are and how they were amassed; how the archive came to contain poetry and drama by Donne, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton and others; and what the significance of this fact is, both in terms of seventeenth-century theories about politics, patronage and society, and modern critical and historical interpretations. These questions cast new light on the early transmission of Donne’s verse, especially his Satires and verse epistles. -

The meadow flowers spring and bloom where the waters annually deposit their slime, not where they reach in some freshet only. A man is not his hope, nor his despair, nor yet his past deed. We know not yet what we have done, still less what we are doing. Wait till evening, and other parts of our day’s work will shine than we had thought at noon, and we shall discover the real purport of our toil. -

Biography John Suckling
Biography John Suckling A popular label for many poets in seventeenth-century Britain has been "Cavalier," and the person who usually comes first to mind is Sir John Suckling. The classification implies an allegiance to Charles I in his political and military battles against various Parliamentarian or religious groups during the later 1620s through his execution on 30 January 1649. Included thus are the poets Thomas Carew, Richard Lovelace, Suckling, and Edmund Waller. "Cavalier" also implies that these poets were of a gentlemanly social class, that they bore arms and indeed rode horses in battle when the civil wars raged from 1641 to 1648 (cavalier derives from the French word for horse, cheval), and that they were carefree gallants. Suckling, at least, was of the aristocratic class and often a part of the courtly world of the précieuse life ushered in by Charles's queen, Henrietta Maria, and her French retinue; he was a soldier and was involved in political intrigue; and he was notorious as a gambler and for his conquests of women. A poem like "A Soldier" reflects these matters and at the same time employs the punning wit associated with the poetic group: I am a man of war and might, And know thus much, that I can fight, Whether I am i'th' wrong or right, devoutly. No woman under heaven I fear, New Oaths I can exactly swear, And forty Healths my brain will bear most stoutly. I cannot speak, but I can doe As much as any of our crew; And if you doubt it, some of you may prove me.
