This year marks the 30th year since UIC consolidated its two Chicago campuses. The past three decades have been a time of profound change for Student Affairs as the direction has moved from providing basic services to strategically designed programs to nurture student success and improve degree completion. While Student Affairs historically served the students’ out­of­class needs through providing a wide array of programs and services, the mission has evolved to actively engage students in the learning process. From the addition of residence halls on the east side of campus to creation of the Student Services Building to continued focus on student learning in partnership with Academic Affairs, a more holistic approach has contributed to campus gains in student retention and graduation rates. The OVCSA nurtures student academic success from orientation through graduation by offering a well­rounded collegiate experience that fosters lifelong success. Alleviating barriers to degree completion is an important part of the OVCSA’s mission.

Officials reported that nothing was stolen or damaged inside the shop, VANDALIZED located on the first floor of the Wabash Campus Building, 623 S. Wabash Ave., but the outside glass was cracked, and a door handle to one of the offices was kicked in and broken off. Security guards and shop workers declined to comment on the incident.

Joseph, J.D. March 6, 2015 Georgetown University Washington, D.C. SPIRITUALIZING THE POLITICAL WITHOUT POLITICIZING RELIGION: R. SARGENT SHRIVER'S LEADERSHIP OF THE "WAR ON POVERTY" Robert T. Joseph, J.D. Mentor: Gregory Havrilak, Ph.D ABSTRACT In early 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson declared his administration's "unconditional war on poverty in America," urging Congress and the American people to join with him in the effort. As part of the War on Poverty, Congress later that year passed the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 (EOA). It created an Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) that would be headed by R. Sargent Shriver. Shriver had a strong Catholic piety and was an intellectually ardent student of theology and political philosophy. This paper examines how, in leading the OEO, Shriver expressed, used, or reflected various religious or spiritual values, ideals, and concepts, but without "politicizing religion." The analysis draws on biographic information about Shriver and materials pertaining to the history of the EOA. Speeches by Shriver are extensively cited. Chapter One briefly reviews the EOA. Chapter Two provides a short biography of Shriver, with attention to Shriver's Catholic faith and interest in religious figures and thinkers. With this background, Chapter Three reviews how Shriver involved faith- based organizations in EOA programs.

O’Brien, Ph.D. Committee Member ii ABSTRACT INSTITUTIONAL INNOVATOR: SARGENT SHRIVER’S LIFE AS AN ENGAGED CATHOLIC AND AS AN ACTIVE LIBERAL Name: Martin, Daniel Edwin University of Dayton Advisor: Dr. Anthony B. Smith This dissertation argues that Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr.’s Roman Catholicism is undervalued when understanding his role crafting late 1950s and 1960s public policies. Shriver played a role in desegregating Chicago’s Catholic and public school systems as well as Catholic hospitals. He helped to shape and lead the Peace Corps. He also designed many of the programs launched in President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. Shriver’s ability to produce new policies and agencies within a broader structure of governance is well known. However, Shriver’s Catholicism is often neglected when examining his influence on key public policy initiatives and innovations. This dissertation argues that Shriver’s Roman Catholic upbringing formed him in such a way as to understand the nature of large bureaucracies and to see possibilities for innovation within an overarching structure.
