    THE SHOW MUST GO ON by Sean Aita Inspired by Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days www.schooltours.at @ All passengers on this epic journey This year, a small Theatre-in-Education company (consisting of four actors) is inviting you to join them on a trip around the world … sounds good, eh? However, there are a few (not so small) matters to sort out beforehand, such as: which play are they going to do? Who is going to play which part? And – who is going to pay for it all? As it happens, all four of them have to work second jobs and rehearse in the evenings, because it’s quite difficult to make a living without a fixed-term contract at a theatre. Money is only going to come in if and when they do a show. So they decide to put Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days on stage. Perhaps you’ve read the story, or seen a film version? Mr Fogg, a rich English Gentleman, bets two friends that he is able to go around the world in 80 days – which is less than three months! The story is set in the 19th century when travelling to faraway countries wasn’t as easy as it is nowadays. No cars, no planes, no fast trains, and some railway lines (in different countries) hadn’t even been built … Next problem: the casting. In the story, there hardly are any female characters. And guess what – after some discussion, the two main roles in the story, Mr Phileas Fogg and his French servant Passepartout, are played by the two girls! And lastly, just as the play seems to come together, the promised grant from the Arts Council is cancelled.

    Darya Makarishcheva Ms. Lindsay Benedict Journalism 21 June 2020 2020 Artist of the Year statement During the 2019-2020 school year I created cartoons and illustrations for The ​ Highlander, McLean High School’s newsmagazine. My focus this year was in creating an ​ independent staff that would be able to use relevant Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, all without my help, and to educate upcoming artists and designers on the intricacies of working on a publication staff. I created an outline of lesson plans and activities for the school year, making sure that by the end of the school year my classmates would learn to create anything they’d envisioned. I faced the challenge of giving everyone the attention they needed, as everyone was at different skill levels, but I did my best and was able to engage all of my classmates during our activities. As the 2019 NSPA/JEA convention was held close to our school this year, and I’ve been to the events before, I passionately advocated for my classmates to attend and absorb all of the information the convention had to offer. At one In-Design session a third of the room was full of my classmates, and I learned the most there - a lot about the intricacies of In Design’s tools. After being inspired at the convention I introduced the InDesign template and the Paragraph Style function to the staff. My favorite moment was learning about the importance of CMYK/RGB values after misprinting the color black. As my goal this year was to make sure that the staff would have all of my knowledge, I created a personal, detailed ​ ​ database of presentations, projects, and resources that anyone can access and use in the future.

    The Show Must go On Modesto High continues to adjust to the challenges brought on by the pandemic. Schools Reopening: Our Path Forward After almost an entire semester of distance learning, many students, teachers, and parents are eager for schools to reopen for in-person learning. In fact, according to a district survey, 66.75% of grade 7-12 parents said they would send their student back to school if MCS is able to safely transition back to in-person learning. Howev- er, with new cases of the Coronavirus surging, the question remains of how the district will be able to reopen schools while maintaining public health and safety. The school district has been meticulously work- ing on a plan to fulfill students’ and parents’ desires to reopen schools, while keeping safety at the forefront of their decision-making pro- cess. At the board meeting on November ninth, Modesto City Schools approved the “7-12 Safe Schools Reopening Plan.” According to the plan, students will be divided into two cohorts, groups A and B, which will attend in-person classes on different days. The district will also focus on enforcing mask-wearing and sanitizing practices during school hours. Carson Carranza, the Student Representative to the Board, supported the decision, stating that, “The longer we stay in distance learning, the more students are going to fall behind… these numbers keep slipping.” He elaborated by bring- ing attention to the fact that failing grades have nearly doubled during distance learning. Currently, grades TK-6 have already returned to in-person learning, which has proved to be suc- cessful thus far.

RW: Well, the idea for 'The Wall' came from ten years of touring, rock shows, I think, particularly the last few years in '75 and in '77 we were playing to very large audiences, some of whom were our old audience who'd come to see us play, but most of whom were only there for the beer, in big stadiums, and, er, consequently it became rather an alienating experience doing the shows. I became very conscious of a wall between us and our audience and so this record started out as being an expression of those feelings. TV: But it goes I think a little deeper than that, because the record actually seems to start at the beginning of the character's life. RW: The story has been developed considerably since then, this was two years ago [1977], I started to write it, and now it's partly about a live show situation--in fact the album starts off in a live show, and then it flashes back and traces a story of a character, if you like, of Pink himself, whoever he may be. But initially it just stemmed from shows being horrible. TV: When you say "horrible" do you mean that really you didn't want to be there? RW: Yeah, it's all, er, particularly because the people who you're most aware of at a rock show on stage are the front 20 or 30 rows of bodies.
