Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. Key words: Anthracia ephialtes, Noctuidae, faunistics, Catalonia, Iberian Peninsula.

COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY OF THE MALE GENITALIA IN LEPIDOPTERA. By DEV RAJ MEHTA, M. Sc.~ Ph. D. (Canta.b.), 'Univefsity Scholar of the Government of the Punjab, India (Department of Zoology, University of Oambridge). CONTENTS. PAGE. Introduction 197 Historical Review 199 Technique. 201 N ontenclature 201 Function • 205 Comparative Morphology 206 Conclusions in Phylogeny 257 Summary 261 Literature 1 262 INTRODUCTION. In the domains of both Morphology and Taxonomy the study' of Insect genitalia has evoked considerable interest during the past half century. Zander (1900, 1901, 1903) suggested a common structural plan for the genitalia in various orders of insects. This work stimulated further research and his conclusions were amplified by Crampton (1920) who homologized the different parts in the genitalia of Hymenoptera, Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Trichoptera Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Strepsiptera with those of more generalized insects like the Ephe meroptera and Thysanura. During this time the use of genitalic charac ters for taxonomic purposes was also realized particularly in cases where the other imaginal characters had failed to serve. In this con nection may be mentioned the work of Buchanan White (1876), Gosse (1883), Bethune Baker (1914), Pierce (1909, 1914, 1922) and others. Also, a comparative account of the genitalia, as a basis for the phylo genetic study of different insect orders, was employed by Walker (1919), Sharp and Muir (1912), Singh-Pruthi (1925) and Cole (1927), in Orthop tera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and the Diptera respectively. It is sur prising, work of this nature having been found so useful in these groups, that an important order like the Lepidoptera should have escaped careful analysis at the hands of the morphologists.

INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately.

Day 1 Sunday 21st May London to Lyon St. Exupery – La Chapelle en Vercors Seven group members met with Paul at Lyon St. Exupery Airport, after catching flight BA360 from London Heathrow, Terminal 3. After completing immigration formalities and collecting our luggage, we made our way to the car park, where our vehicle was waiting. With luggage loaded, we set off travelling towards Grenoble, on the A43 and A48. Along the way White Stork, several Black Kites and Common Buzzard were noted. We stopped for our picnic lunch at a motorway rest area, Aire Burcin. With our lunch completed, we had a look for some butterflies, finding Common Blue, Heath Fritillary, Small White, Small Heath and Black-veined White. We also found Burnet Companion moths. For the birds, there was Common Chaffinch, Spotted Flycatcher and Great Tit. Continuing on down the A48, we left the motorway, and made our way the area immediately around Grenoble Isère Airport. Here we found Common Buzzard, European Stonechat, Serin and Common Kestrel. Along the arable margins we found Cruciata laevipes (Crosswort), Gallium mollugo (Hedge Bedstraw) and Papaver rhoeas (Common Poppy). We decided to take the inland route onwards, so we drove up through Saint-Marcellin, from where we made our way up onto the Vercors plateau, via Pont-en-Royans and the spectacular Petit Goulets.
