The Show

Embark on a musical trek to kingdoms long forgotten and bustling towns now vanished. Follow the stories of vagabond queens, pauper poets and lovers lost to the sea, all set to spellbinding arrangements of old Sephardi songs worthy of symphonic film scores. Wrap these tales up with lush soulful harmonies evoking Flamenco’s gutsiness and the longings of Fado, all combined with heart-pounding percussion, masterful narration and intricate soundscapes.

Journey through the Balkans to the Mid-East beginning in Sarajevo and winding through Salónica and Jerusalem. Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom is a sonic adventure brought to life by the Guy Mendilow Ensemble, an award-winning quintet of world-class musicians from Israel, Palestine, Argentina, Japan and the USA. The intertwining music and storytelling whisks audiences into multicultural metropolises like Sarajevo and picturesque island towns like Rhodes, conjuring an imagi-nation lost to war and upheaval, recorded in a language that blends archaic Spanish with Arabic, Hebrew and Greek.

This ensemble of internationally savvy world musicians delivers a richly textured global experience of haunting beauty.

Presenters’ Testimony: Audience Impact

“The Guy Mendilow Ensemble was magical! They performed superbly and let us dream throughout the Mediterranean world.” — Peter Steinfeld, ACES Series, Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, IA “...A contemporary exploration of the rich heritage of Balkan and Mediterranean communities. The audience was obviously engaged and moved by this culturally significant performance as Guy created a very unique vibe with his casual yet sophisticated stage presence. Heart, soul, and history, all in one show! He is an incredible talent and we would love to bring him back to our theatre.” — Bruce Halliday, Port Theatre Society, Nanaimo, BC, Canada

“... captivates the audience... The ensemble brings a vitality to the music that I hadn’t experienced with other Sephardic artists.” — Jordan Peimer, Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA “... a great evening of beautiful music and exceptional musicianship!” — John Chicherio, Huntington Summer Arts Festival, Huntington, NY

“... transports the listener to a place far removed from the concert hall or outreach service site.” — Steven Schmidt, Riverside Concerts, Rochester, MN “…The ensemble takes you on a tour through an almost lost world that is filled with stories, beautiful melodies, and traditions. Guy and his ensemble have a way of capturing this tradition while making it ac- cessible and engaging for a contemporary audience...the music has a broad appeal that reaches in a way that’s entertaining and enlightening. Simply said, you come to enjoy a concert, but the cultural experience and learning is much deeper. From his showmanship to his skill as a convener, teacher, and cultural explorer, Guy Mendilow is reviving an important culture though his music, one that I believe has much value throughout the world.” — Laura Mandel, New Center NOW, , MA “The group is truly a topflight ‘world music’ group …the Guy Mendilow Ensemble enthralled, educated and engaged the audiences with its artistic excellence.” — Dr. Lynn L. Siebert, Arts Council of the Morris Area

In addition, we were thrilled to have the group conduct a choral vocal workshop...the students had the opportunity to learn about a unique musical tradition while enjoying the chance to sing with and be coached by experienced professional singers, musicians and educators. I would not hesitate to recommend Guy Mendilow Ensemble for its high level of artistry, tuneful and accessible music, and great work with kids.” — David Mann, Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam, BC, Canada “Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom tenders an incredible gift; a resurgent force of musical settings that explode with artistry, refinement, and excitement.” — Yvon F. Media Recognition

“...music of hope and affirmation, sophisticated in its delivery but easily accessible to listeners anywhere. ” —Chicago Tribune “...an international tour de force.” — Bethlehem Morning Call “The Guy Mendilow Ensemble embodies world music at its best.” —The Cedar Rapids Gazette “Guy Mendilow is quickly developing a reputation as a masterful, deeply passionate and sincere performer.” — Global Rhythm Magazine “One of the most ear-opening albums of the year. During the 1960s, Kaleidoscope featuring David Lindley stretched the boundaries of world music within a rock band about as far as they could be stretched, walking away with a reputation as heroes for sonic adventurers. The Guy Mendilow Ensemble may not be quite as rambunctious, but they are no less daring. ” — The Boomer’s Guide to Music & News “One of Boston’s most original world-music acts.” — Boston Herald “This isn’t for quirky ears, it’s for jaded ears that need to be shaken awake with something substantially different that keeps the interest on the beam throughout. Delightfully different, even when it seems like it might be familiar. ” —Midwest Record “This is, to folk, what Bela Fleck is to Foggy Mountain Breakdown. This is unusual and exciting.” — Folk Song Society “The glory of what [Mendilow] does is finding a common ground a ong different cultures. And that’s what makes his music so exciting.” —Jewish Advocate “Auditory magic” — Wildy’s World “A magical, shape-shifting world music quintet hailing from four countries…Often reminiscent of David Lindley’s all encompassing,stripped-gear approach to pan-genre explorations.” — Iowa City Press-Citizen “…Vibrant musical storytelling awash with warm harmonies, captivating rhythms and rollicking, fast-paced vocal improvisations.” — Cambridge Chronicle

GUY MENDILOW (Israel/UK/USA — Musical Director / Vocals, Berimbau, ) A citizen of Israel, Great Britain and the United States, Guy Mendilow grew up in what seemed like a global game of hopscotch with homes in Israel, the United States, South Africa and, later, stints in Mexico and Brazil. He began his professional stage career at age ten, touring internationally and domestically with the American Boy choir and singing some two hundred concerts a year in venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Mendilow grew up listening to Ladino songs in his boyhood Jerusalem home and attended school in one of the area’s larger Ladino communities. Yet it wasn’t until later that he started listening through other artists’ interpretations to the traditional songs themselves and their tales — and got hooked. Today, Mendilow connects diverse listeners with the adventure, humor and grit of old Sephardi songs, combining cultural scholarship with a strong understanding of his audiences honed over nearly thirty years of touring and a love of crafting compelling stage productions. By transporting audiences on a cinematographic musical adventure to distant places and times, the semitheatrical Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom sparks fascination with little known Sephardic communities from the Balkans and Mediterranean, largely destroyed in WWII. The show captivates general audiences regardless of any prior knowledge or even interest in Ladino, increasing awareness of these cultures, their endangered language and their rich heritage of song and story.

Mendilow earned his Bachelor of Arts from , his Masters in Music from Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA, and his International Certification in Dalcroze Eurhythmics from the Longy School of Music. He is currently a candidate for the advanced Dalcroze Eurythmics License degree under the mentorship of Lisa Parker.

Alongside enthusiastic reception at performing arts centers like the Shalin Liu Performance Center (Rockport, MA), Port Theatre (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada), Teatró Principal (Zamora, Spain) and the Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles, CA), Mendilow's ensemble adds to the strength and diversity of festivals like the Chicago World Music Festival (Chicago, IL), International Festival of Arts and Ideas (New Haven, CT) and Festival Mémoire et Racines (Joliette, QC, Canada). Mendilow is a frequent visiting artist in universities including Harvard University, University of Washington, Emory University, Cornell University and Brandeis University, where he presents on a range of topics from the responsibilities of artists working with traditional material to improvisation as a tool for leadership. He and his ensemble are sought out by leading cultural organizations like Celebrity Series of Boston for their community impact through immersive residencies and thoughtful outreach. These programs include Spanish-English programs and collaborations with student string and choral ensembles.

Process: Springboarding from Tradition into Modern Imagination

It should be stated from the start that Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom does not aim for ethnomusicological authenticity. My creative process with Ladino song begins with ethno-musicological field recordings, followed by research into the songs’ traditional function and context. Most of these songs were sung primarily by women, in the home or community events like weddings, unaccompanied except perhaps for a drum. The themes may be dark, but the songs were normally sung in a familiar way, without being taken overly seriously and certainly lacking much of the theatricality in which they are commonly presented today.

My next steps often lead me away from tradition, knowingly and deliberately. I ask compositional questions: “What can I imagine the mood of the story, or the emotions of some of the characters, to be, despite the traditional ways the song would have been sung? Was I to create a soundtrack for this story, how would I use the musical tools available to me, and the expertise of the Ensemble members, to bring these tales, moods and emotions to life in a way that will feel personally real, and that will give audiences a powerful emotional experience?”

It is risky to recast such old, rich material this way. We leap from tradition into modern imagination. My hope is that the resulting arrangements bring the stories to life in a way that will be vivid and fresh for you and for me.Obviously whatever flaws you will find in this project are mine — not the tradition or the songs themselves, songs that, after all, have been around for quite some time and will, I trust, endure.
