Headway Last to First in Spring Cup Score Cont SUNDAY, 4 MARCH, 2018 WINX SETS GROUP 1 RECORD HEADWAY LAST TO FIRST The world number one mare Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) IN SPRING CUP SCORE made a seamless return to the races on Saturday, kicking off her autumn campaign with a facile seven-length score in Randwick=s G1 Chipping Norton S. Making her first start back since her historic third win in the G1 Cox Plate on Oct. 28, Winx was last from the gates under Hugh Bowman and was about seven lengths off the lead after the opening furlong. Bowman was still sitting chilly at the halfway point of the mile contest, and as they passed the 600 metre mark the mare began to make up ground, circling runners under a hold while up to five wide coming off the turn. The great mare had moved within two lengths of the lead without being asked as they straightened for home, and she took off when Bowman shook the reins passing the 300, drawing off to win under wraps from the Group 1-winning colt Prized Icon (Aus) (More Than Ready). The win was Winx=s 16th at Group 1 level, taking her one past the great sprinting mare Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}). It was also Winx=s 23rd Havana Gold=s Headway (outside) goes last to first consecutive win. Black Caviar won 25 times in her unbeaten in the Spring Cup | racingfotos.com career. Cont. in Worldwide News p6 Headway (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) bettered an Apr. 21 first-up second at Newbury with a three-length maiden win at Chester next time on May 27 before falling a head shy of glory in Royal Ascot=s June 20 G2 Coventry S. on stakes debut. Slipping to sixth in Goodwood=s Aug. 3 G2 Richmond S., he concluded a five-race juvenile campaign with a third in York=s Aug. 26 G2 Gimcrack S. last time and recovered from a seemingly hopeless position in Saturday=s Listed Spring Cup to secure a first black-type success in ultimately snug fashion. The May 5 G1 2000 Guineas entry was slowest of six into stride and trailed the field from flagfall. Stoked up on the home turn, he was six lengths adrift of clear leader Rufus King at the eighth pole, but delivered a blistering late burst to power by that rival in hand nearing the line for a career high. ATurning in I=d have been happy finishing second, Winx and Hugh Bowman after the Chipping Norton | Bronwen Healy but it was gob-smacking how he picked up because they=d gone a nice pace,@ admitted assistant trainer Maureen Haggas. • History of Thoroughbred Breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley
Thoroughbred Breeding History in the Upper Hunter Valley Executive Summary The history of thoroughbred breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley dates back to the very early days of settlement with the importation of the TB Stallion ‘Crawford’ to Potter Macqueen’s Segenhoe Stud in 1826. Since then there has been an expanding continuum. In the early 21st century the valley is acknowledged as one of the premier TB breeding areas of the world comparing favourably with both Newmarket UK and Kentucky USA. There have been a number of iterations when one area of the valley or another has reigned supreme. Broadly speaking the region has been divided into at least three geographical clusters: Denman and environs including Widden, Bylong and Baerami Valleys plus Jerrys Plains, Muswellbrook and district, Scone and region with Merriwa and also latterly the Murrurundi/Timor precinct. It might be reasonable to argue that the TB enterprises were gradually squeezed northwards by the encroaching coal mining industry from earlier establishments in the lower Hunter Valley; especially around Maitland. Remarkably the ‘mud map’ of thoroughbred studs in 1900 very closely resembles that for 2016 with ownership the only issue. There is one notable exception: Widden Stud. The Hon James White was the pioneer leviathan owner-breeder in the early days of metropolitan racing in both Sydney and Melbourne. His trail blazing forays included Epsom Derby assault on the august Jockey Club establishment in England. During the latter part of the 19th century the Thompson family of the Widden & Bylong Valleys were preeminent. Brothers W & F. A. Moses sustained a brief but exceptionally productive period at ‘Arrowfield’ (now ‘Coolmore’) near Jerrys Plains early in the 20th century.

PRIME DISPATCH Edition 88 – 21/10/2015 Compiled by Joe o’Neill Annaman as a yearling. He was a solid winner at Ipswich on Friday He now heads to Doomben on Melbourne Cup Day Annaman’s 3rd win at Ipswich on Friday topped of a very good week for the Prime team. I wrote a couple of weeks ago we are in a transitional phase where quite a number of our older horses which have served us so well have moved on and we are now we are starting to step out some of the younger horses we have in our team and in the main they look to have plenty of ability which is what we want. In many ways I see myself as a talent scout at a football club, moving around trying to get the best possible players within our salary cap. I’m confident we have done a pretty good job during the past few years. Page 1 On Wednesday at Warwick Farm Miss De Vega had her first run and she looked very good coming home from last on the turn to run 4th. She is a beautifully bred filly being out by Lope de Vega out of the very well related mare Blonde Mafia. On Saturday Isthmian had her first run at Randwick finishing 4th after setting the pace in a race where the winner broke Sweet Idea’s race record. Isthmian drew poorly and had to be used up early causing her to over race. If she drew a decent marble our feeling is she would have gone close to winning the race.
