  • History of Thoroughbred Breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley
Thoroughbred Breeding History in the Upper Hunter Valley Executive Summary The history of thoroughbred breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley dates back to the very early days of settlement with the importation of the TB Stallion ‘Crawford’ to Potter Macqueen’s Segenhoe Stud in 1826. Since then there has been an expanding continuum. In the early 21st century the valley is acknowledged as one of the premier TB breeding areas of the world comparing favourably with both Newmarket UK and Kentucky USA. There have been a number of iterations when one area of the valley or another has reigned supreme. Broadly speaking the region has been divided into at least three geographical clusters: Denman and environs including Widden, Bylong and Baerami Valleys plus Jerrys Plains, Muswellbrook and district, Scone and region with Merriwa and also latterly the Murrurundi/Timor precinct. It might be reasonable to argue that the TB enterprises were gradually squeezed northwards by the encroaching coal mining industry from earlier establishments in the lower Hunter Valley; especially around Maitland. Remarkably the ‘mud map’ of thoroughbred studs in 1900 very closely resembles that for 2016 with ownership the only issue. There is one notable exception: Widden Stud. The Hon James White was the pioneer leviathan owner-breeder in the early days of metropolitan racing in both Sydney and Melbourne. His trail blazing forays included Epsom Derby assault on the august Jockey Club establishment in England. During the latter part of the 19th century the Thompson family of the Widden & Bylong Valleys were preeminent. Brothers W & F. A. Moses sustained a brief but exceptionally productive period at ‘Arrowfield’ (now ‘Coolmore’) near Jerrys Plains early in the 20th century.

SEMPATRECMHB 2E2R 21012 02020 ISSVUOEL 2051 1 OTI GAZETTE The official newsletter of OTI RACING and Management Sparks flew earlier this week in Australia when Racing Victoria IN THIS WEEK'S announced that it would propose a nationwide reduction in the use of EDITION the whip. Rather than this important topic taking the limelight, the discussion quickly and unfortunately moved to whether Racing Victoria had acted appropriately in making such an announcement. OTI NEWS Upcoming OTI Runners OTI Fun and Games In the eyes on the general public, the use of the whip in racing is A CONVERSATION intrinsically linked to horse welfare. In this age, despite whatever WITH argument racing may use to justify its use, most people, especially GLEN BOSS children, see it as unacceptable that a horse is whipped to make it go faster. MICHAEL LYNCH Despite the backlash against Racing Victoria, it is comforting for the ON FIELD SIZES future of the industry to see that it has taken a position on the issue. Hopefully a united stand by all the peak bodies on the reduction and OTI TO RACE ultimately elimination of the whip will do wonders for racing’s image. It MONTABOT will support our welfare claims and equally, importantly lay the foundation for more young people to want to enter the sport. SOMETHING TO The price of inaction on the issue is high. In losing the support of the WATCH, LISTEN OR public, we encourage politicians to make the decision for us. It’s an easy READ policy to sell for a major party to attract votes.

  • The Title of NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year Is on the Line for O'reilly Filly
The title of NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year is on the line for O’Reilly filly Miss Selby this Saturday, when she sets out in the Gr.1 Wellfield Stud New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham. The last start winner of the Gr.3 Lowland Stakes has been a model of consistency, placing in all six of her career starts. As a consequence, the John Bary-trained galloper has netted 12 points in the prestigious NZB-sponsored Filly series, with victory on Saturday securing a vital 12 points which would see her overtake Costa Viva (20.5 pts), Hera (O’Reilly) and Bounding (13 pts). Whilst these three horses are notable omissions on Saturday, Miss Selby is tipped to face her stiffest opposition in the form of the last start Gr.3 Sunline Vase winner Rock Diva and from no less than four other WS-sired chances (see picture below). He was a solid winner at Ipswich on Friday He now heads to Doomben on Melbourne Cup Day Annaman’s 3rd win at Ipswich on Friday topped of a very good week for the Prime team. I wrote a couple of weeks ago we are in a transitional phase where quite a number of our older horses which have served us so well have moved on and we are now we are starting to step out some of the younger horses we have in our team and in the main they look to have plenty of ability which is what we want.
