    Thoroughbred Breeding History in the Upper Hunter Valley Executive Summary The history of thoroughbred breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley dates back to the very early days of settlement with the importation of the TB Stallion ‘Crawford’ to Potter Macqueen’s Segenhoe Stud in 1826. Since then there has been an expanding continuum. In the early 21st century the valley is acknowledged as one of the premier TB breeding areas of the world comparing favourably with both Newmarket UK and Kentucky USA. There have been a number of iterations when one area of the valley or another has reigned supreme. Broadly speaking the region has been divided into at least three geographical clusters: Denman and environs including Widden, Bylong and Baerami Valleys plus Jerrys Plains, Muswellbrook and district, Scone and region with Merriwa and also latterly the Murrurundi/Timor precinct. It might be reasonable to argue that the TB enterprises were gradually squeezed northwards by the encroaching coal mining industry from earlier establishments in the lower Hunter Valley; especially around Maitland. Remarkably the ‘mud map’ of thoroughbred studs in 1900 very closely resembles that for 2016 with ownership the only issue. There is one notable exception: Widden Stud. The Hon James White was the pioneer leviathan owner-breeder in the early days of metropolitan racing in both Sydney and Melbourne. His trail blazing forays included Epsom Derby assault on the august Jockey Club establishment in England. During the latter part of the 19th century the Thompson family of the Widden & Bylong Valleys were preeminent. Brothers W & F. A. Moses sustained a brief but exceptionally productive period at ‘Arrowfield’ (now ‘Coolmore’) near Jerrys Plains early in the 20th century.

Through two Book 2 sessions, Keeneland sold 466 yearlings for $69,281,000. The Book 2 average was $148,672--up 10.7% from a year ago--and the median was $117,500, an 11.9% increase from 2015. The book=s top price was $1 million and there were 22 horses to sell for $400,000 or over. During last year=s Book 2, 525 yearlings grossed $70,557,000 for an average of $134,394 and a median of $105,000. The top price was $700,000 and there were 17 yearlings sold for $400,000 or over. Race first run at Morphettville in1876. Previous to this date it was run on the Old Course. He was a solid winner at Ipswich on Friday He now heads to Doomben on Melbourne Cup Day Annaman’s 3rd win at Ipswich on Friday topped of a very good week for the Prime team. I wrote a couple of weeks ago we are in a transitional phase where quite a number of our older horses which have served us so well have moved on and we are now we are starting to step out some of the younger horses we have in our team and in the main they look to have plenty of ability which is what we want. In many ways I see myself as a talent scout at a football club, moving around trying to get the best possible players within our salary cap. I’m confident we have done a pretty good job during the past few years. Page 1 On Wednesday at Warwick Farm Miss De Vega had her first run and she looked very good coming home from last on the turn to run 4th. She is a beautifully bred filly being out by Lope de Vega out of the very well related mare Blonde Mafia. On Saturday Isthmian had her first run at Randwick finishing 4th after setting the pace in a race where the winner broke Sweet Idea’s race record. Isthmian drew poorly and had to be used up early causing her to over race. If she drew a decent marble our feeling is she would have gone close to winning the race.
