Method:The study was conducted in the maleo bird conservation area of PT. Panca Amara Utama in Uso Village, Batui District, Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, from August 2016 to December 2018, by using 10 1-day-old maleo birds. Variables observed included cloaca morphology, macrocephalon and estrogen hormone concentration. Results:The cloaca of Maleo birds has a difference. The difference is in the protrusion on the top of the cloaca. The male Maleo birds have a protrusion in the cloaca while the females do not have it. Organs in the form of protrusion in the cloaca are thought to be a sign of male sex. There are differences in shape and size between the male and female macrocephalon, the males have about 3.96 ± 011 cm width in average with rounded shape while the females have about 3.20 ± 0.10 cm width in average with oval shape. -

The triumphs, challenges and failures of young North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli): a study of behaviour, growth, dispersal and mortality Stephanie Walden A thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Alexandra Louise Wilson 2013 i ii Abstract North Island brown kiwi (NIBK, Apteryx mantelli), an endemic New Zealand species, are estimated to have declined by 90% from pre-human colonisation numbers. Currently, at least 60% of mortality is attributed to introduced mammalian predators, namely stoats (Mustela erminea) preying on chicks. Therefore, conservation effort focuses on predator trapping/killing, and hatching and rearing NIBK chicks in captivity and releasing them back into the wild. These efforts are resulting in increased recruitment of chicks into populations. However, little is known about the biology and behaviour of NIBK chicks in the wild and how this may affect management of these populations. Consequently, the aim of this study was to examine the ecology of young wild NIBK in a natural high density population with reduced predator diversity on Ponui Island. More specifically, the goal was to determine their growth rates, behaviour around the natal nest, dispersal and mortality, and how these factors may be influenced by environmental variables. During the 2010 - 2011 and 2011 - 2012 breeding seasons 29 young NIBK were observed from hatching until mortality or the end of 2012. -
Diversity, Abundance and Seasonality of Birds in a Caribbean Pine Plantation and Native Broad-Leaved Forest at Trinidad, West Indies

HAYES and ISHMAELANGELO SAMAD Summary Monoculture plantations of exotic Caribbean pine Finns caribaen have been planted extensively in many tropical countries, but little is known about the bird communities inhabiting them. From October 1995 to September 1996, we compared bird populations in a 37-ha stand of mature Caribbean pine forest (planted in 1972) with an adjacent, similar-sized stand of native broad-leaved forest at Mount Saint Benedict, Trinidad, West Indies. Ten censuses, each including 10 fixed-radius point counts (25 m radius, 10 minutes duration), were conducted simultaneously during different months of the year in each habitat. Both species richness and species diversity were significantly lower in the pine forest, but the overall abundance of individual birds did not differ between the two forests. Seasonal variation in bird populations was more pronounced in the pine forest, where fewer birds (and presumably food resources) were present during the dry season. The pine forest bird community was dominated by forest edge specialists and the native forest by forest interior specialists at both the individual and species levels. At the individual level, nectarivores, aerial foragers and understorey foragers were proportionately more common in the pine forest; insectivores and canopy foragers were more common in the native forest. At the species level, more aerial foragers occurred in the pine forest and more understorey foragers in the native forest. The diversity of bird communities in pine plantations may be promoted by increasing habitat heterogeneity. -

Camera Installation Instructions
Camera Installation Instructions Before going into the field: The following field equipment and supplies need to be ready and packed before the team leaves for a field assignment: 1) Trail camera unit. Unit should include the actual trail camera with 8 Eneloop batteries and SD card already in place, the trail camera armored case with label attached, and the master python cable lock with matching key on keychain. REMEMBER!!! When packing the camera traps to take in the field do not store them with food or any other substances that might attach odors to the camera trap. Food or other smells might attract animals to the camera trap in the field, thus biasing the estimates of detection probability. 2) GPS capable device. This can either be a portable or handheld GPS unit or a GPS- capable smartphone with either the TopoMaps+ (iPhone) or Backcountry Navigator (Android) application downloaded. 3) Fieldwork folder. The fieldwork folder should include this camera installation sheet; the datasheet required for each check; the station placard to be displayed after a deployment, check, or takedown; a dry erase marker, and a pen. 4) Hiking equipment. Please make sure to have AT LEAST the following whenever going out into the field: a. Daypack and hiking partner (all volunteers MUST be accompanied by AT LEAST one other person b. Map, GPS, or compass c. Extra clothing, food, and water d. First-aid kit e. Headlamp or flashlight f. Matches and fire-starting kit or lighter g. Knife or multi-use camping tool h. Sunglasses and sunscreen i. Water treatment device j.
