Media Contacts: For Immediate Release Brooks Addicott, 435.658.3456 December 3, 2008 [email protected] Amy McGee, 310.492.2333 [email protected] 2009 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FILMS IN COMPETITION Festival Celebrates 25 Years of Independent Filmmaking and Cinematic Storytelling Park City, UT—Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the 25th Sundance Film Festival. In addition to the four Competition categories, the Festival presents films in five out-of-competition sections to be announced tomorrow. The 2009 Sundance Film Festival runs January 15-25 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. The complete list of films is available at www.sundance.org/festival. "This year's films are not narrowly defined. Instead we have a blurring of genres, a crossing of boundaries: geographic, generational, socio-economic and the like," said Geoffrey Gilmore, Director, Sundance Film Festival. "The result is both an exhilarating and emotive Festival in which traditional mythologies are suspended, discoveries are made, and creative storytelling is embraced." "Audiences may be surprised by how much emotion this year's films evoke," said John Cooper, Director of Programming, Sundance Film Festival. "We are seeing the next evolution of the independent film movement where films focus on storytelling with a sense of connection and purpose." For the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, 118 feature-length films were selected including 88 world premieres, 18 North American premieres, and 4 U.S. premieres representing 21 countries with 42 first-time filmmakers, including 28 in competition. -

Bill’s Guide to Week Two of the 47th Annual Chicago International Film Festival By Bill Stamets Special for Films for Two® My recommended films in Week Two (in “must see” order): 1.) Pina: German director Wim Wenders previously profiled Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Cuban musicians. His latest documentary introduces cinefiles to the choreography of German avant-gardist Pina Bausch. In his first use of 3-D cinematography, Wenders evokes the volume of the stage, even for performances staged in non-theatrical settings, including a tramway and an escalator. Four different works are presented. Some are revisited via archival 2-D footage. Seeing various versions adds more figurative depth to our appreciation of Bausch's work than the 3-D adds literal depth to our onscreen perception. Bausch's death during the making of the film may have lent an elegiac note to the laudatory interviews with members of her international company Tanztheater Wuppertal. They do not speak on camera during looking-into-the lens portrait sessions. The soundtrack excerpts their comments, apparently recorded off- camera, to underscore their role as voiceless dancers. Wenders channels Bausch's tactile and theoretical grasp of the body as metaphysical material for art. 2.) The Descendants: Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth) directs George Clooney as Matt King, an Hawaiian lawyer dealing with his wife hospitalized in a coma and their 10-year-old and 17- year-old daughters. Payne and his co-writers start from Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2008 novel for a truly touching male melodrama, as Clooney's character reconciles his mixed emotions about his wife. -

Seattle continues to outperform the region, the state, and the country in our rate of job growth and retail sales. Our monthly unemployment rate is down to 4.7 percent in April, well below that of the state and the nation as a whole. We’re training workers through the Seattle Jobs Initiative, investing in schools, and building new infrastructure. This is great news for Seattle. But we can’t coast on our success. We can look across America to see examples of cities that did not continue innovating and fell into decline. Seattle has been there before. And we have more work to do. Some residents still struggle to find work. Others have a job but still don’t make enough money to support their families. Our neighborhood businesses have bounced back from the recession, but still need support to remain strong. This Seattle Jobs Plan update is focused on supporting innovation and building shared prosperity. We are launching Startup Seattle, an initiative to support the growth of the Seattle technology startup community. We will work to streamline regulation and permitting of restaurants and cafés. We will also improve construction permitting across City departments to save time and improve transparency. 'Bad' Sound: What Puts the 'Mumble' Into Mumblecore?
Theorising ‘bad’ sound: what puts the ‘mumble’ into mumblecore? This is a pre-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in The Velvet Light Trap following peer review. The definitive publisher-authenticated version is available through the University of Texas Press. Few film genres, styles or movements are named with respect to their sound quality; ‘mumblecore’ – a cycle of independent, very low-budget American movies that emerged in the middle of the last decade – is a rare exception. The label is somewhat pejorative – the ‘origin myth’ is that it was jokingly coined by a sound mixer, but has since stuck.1 Aymar Jean Christian observes that mumblecore directors are uncomfortable with the term and tend not to self-identify as mumblecore, making the term analogous to the subcultural term ‘hipster.’2 However, despite being named with reference to its sound, there has been little analysis of its soundtracks, either academically or in the popular press, beyond dismissing the sound as ‘bad,’ with no further comment. This particular notion of ‘bad’ sound bears closer examination; however, close attention to mumblecore’s audiovisual style needs to be contextualised within the broader category of American independent cinema, of which it is a part. Hence, the label is attached to more than just a style – as has been widely argued, American independent or ‘indie’ cinema is partly an economic category, partly a style and partly a discourse.3 As an economic category, given their very low budgets and self-financed status, mumblecore films can be categorised as ‘house indie,’ as delineated by a critic cited by Michael Z. -
Tigerstyle Bio Tigerstyle Are an Influential Asian Electronic Fusion
Tigerstyle Bio Tigerstyle are an influential Asian electronic fusion act that also produces artists on their own digital record label (Soldier Sound Records), and have a growing a reputation for creating effective youth projects. They started their music career in 1997 when as DJs they created Desi Bombsquad Sound System with the intent of nurturing the bhangra scene in Scotland as they felt it lagged behind the English bhangra scene. The brothers have have toured all over the world and shared stages with the likes of Lily Allen, Dub Pistols, Misty in Roots, Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney, Gunjan, Asian Dub Foundation,Badmarsh & Shri, Truth Hurts, Panjabi MC, Future World Funk as well as Bobby Friction and DJ Nihal on BBC Radio 1. In the second series of Britain's Got Talent on ITV1 in May 2008, the song used by dance act Signature in their audition and again in their performance in the final was "Nachna Onda Nei," a bhangra remix of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure," featuring Kaka Bhaniawala with covering vocals. After being featured, it made the top 100 for the first time, spending one week at #62. Tigerstyle are one of the few Asian acts to have ever recorded a live session for the late John Peel. They also performed on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury Festival in July 2007. Their Bollywood debut came in the shape of exclusive remixes of "Bas Ek Kinng" and "Bhootni Ke," on the soundtrack of the blockbuster movie of summer 2008, Singh Is Kinng.
