A Cinema Guild release 2018 / 188 minutes / 2.39:1 / DCP Dolby Digital 5.1 / Turkish PRESS BOOKING Adam Walker Tom Sveen Film Forum, 212.627.2035 Cinema Guild [email protected] [email protected] The Cinema Guild, Inc. 2803 Ocean Ave Brooklyn, NY 11229 Tel: (212) 685-6242, Fax: (212) 685-4717 www.cinemaguild.com Press Materials: http://www.cinemaguild.com/theatrical/wildpeartree_press.htm SYNOPSIS Sinan (Aydin Doğu Demirkol), an aspiring writer, returns home after university hoping to scrape together enough money to publish his first novel. He wanders the town encountering old flames and obstinate gatekeepers and finds his youthful ambition increasingly at odds with the deferred dreams of his gambling- addict father (Murat Cemcir). As his own fantasies mingle with reality, Sinan grapples with the people and the place that have made him who he is. Following in the great tradition of family dramas like Death of a Salesman and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, The Wild Pear Tree weaves an evocative tale of creative struggle and familial responsibility with inspired performances, sumptuous imagery and surprising bursts of humor. It’s one of Ceylan’s most personal works to date, a film as rich, layered and uncompromising as the novel its headstrong hero is working to publish. DIRECTOR’S NOTE To make contact with other entities, every person has to reach out of their sheltered cave and take a certain amount of risk. If one reaches out too much and goes too far, one may lose their own orientation, their own identity. And if one fears this too much, one will start refusing to reach out, restrain themselves and retreat, in turn suspending their own growth and development. -

The commanding officer has received word that the villagers are hiding guns. It is announced that all the men of the village will be kept in custody until their families submit and hand over the guns they are hiding. But the problem is there are no guns, at least to the knowledge of these two blameless women. Despairing and on their own, Berfé and Jiyan are faced with a long journey in search of a gun that they can exchange for their beloved Temo. But how can their innocence and naivety find a way out in a system that threatens, eventually, to drag them into the sullied world of an interminable conflict? Hüseyin Karabey (1970) has been making films since 1996. He graduated from the Film and Television Department of Marmara University in 2001. His involvement in the democracy movement in the 90s and his background as a documentarian have determined the style and the content of his subsequent film work. His first feature film My Marlon and Brando was selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival and had its North American premiere at Tribeca, where it won Hüseyin Karabey the Best Director award. -
WINTER SLEEP (Kiş Uykusu)
WINTER SLEEP (Kiş Uykusu) A film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan FIPRESCI Prize Cannes 2014 196 min - 1:2.40 - 5.1 - Turkey / Germany / France Opens November 21, 2014 FOR ALL PRESS ENQUIRIES PLEASE CONTACT Sue Porter/Lizzie Frith – Porter Frith Ltd Tel: 020 7833 8444/E-mail: [email protected] FOR ALL OTHER ENQUIRIES PLEASE CONTACT Robert Beeson – New Wave Films [email protected] 10 Margaret Street London W1W 8RL Tel: 020 3178 7095 newwavefilms.co.uk Synopsis The film is set in the hilly landscape of Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, where the local celebrity, a former actor Aydin (Haluk Bilginer), owns a small hotel cut into the hillside. It’s now winter and the off-season. Aydin runs the hotel with his younger wife Nihal (Melisa Sözen), writes a column for the local newspaper, and is playing with the idea of producing a book on Turkish theatre. He has also inherited local properties from his father, but leaves the business of rent collection to his agent. When a local boy, resentful of his father’s humiliation at the hands of the agent, throws a stone at a jeep whilst Aydin and his agent are driving in it, Aydin ducks out of any responsibility or involvement. As the film progresses, the cocoon in which the self-satisfied and insular man has wrapped himself is gradually unravelled . In a series of magnificent set pieces, the film takes a close look at Aydin's interactions with his wife, his recently divorced sister, and the family of the stone-throwing boy. Aydin is finally brought face-to-face with who and what he truly is. -
