Let’s continue build- ing an inclusive society together! 4 4 Impact report — 2017 who we are We are the Naked Heart Foundation, a charity created by Natalia Vodianova in 2004. The charity was set up in order to support children with disabilities in Russia. We started by creating inclusive parks and playgrounds for children of all ages and abilities under our “Play with Purpose” programme. In 2011, we expanded our work and launched the “Every Child Deserves a Family” programme, which consists of a range of projects to support families of children with special needs. Our mission is to help create an inclusive society that is open to people with disabilities and special needs. We aim to ensure that no child with living parents ends up in an orphanage or a children’s home. We want to prevent parents from feeling that there is no other option but to place children with special needs in institutions, due to social pressures or failures in the health-care system. We also work with families who have made the difficult decision to keep their disabled child at home, making sure that they have access to a comprehensive range of free services and support from child development specialists who are trained in modern practices and methods. We want every child to have access to a vibrant, safe and stimulating place to play. Every neighbourhood, children’s hospital and school should offer a modern play area that is suitable for children of all physical, mental and sensory abilities. We are working on creating and developing a comprehensive support system that helps parents and professionals acquire new knowledge and improve existing skills relating to working with children with special needs. After all, effective support for such children starts with educating the adults taking care of them. There is still a pressing need to develop a community of experts and specialists who work with children with special needs in Russia. There is currently a lack of professionals working in essential fields such as physical and occupational therapy, applied behavioural analysis, alternative and augmentative communication, and feeding and nutrition for children with multiple disorders. This is a new and costly area of education. Crucially, all our programmes and workshops use evidence-based methods. This means that every decision relating to a support programme is based on clear evidence of the effectiveness and safety of existing methods, obtained through clinical trials. Only such an approach can enable the development of modern and effective programmes involving minimal cost and maximum benefit for children and their parents. We believe that we need to work systemat- ically, gradually developing existing infra- structure to improve the living conditions of each individual child. 5 who are we autism key facts Since 2004, we have: 1 in 160 children in the world has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). • How to Make a Russian Salad: Food, Art and Patriotism on the Russian Internet
How to Make a Russian Salad: Food, Art and Patriotism on the Russian Internet JAMES RANN University of Birmingham Abstract: People often now ask what our food means. But what happens when our food liter- ally spells something out? A form of popular creativity often treated with derision – namely, salads in which ingredients form pictures or words – is here read as an instructive example of the production and reproduction of patriotic ideology on the Russian internet. After a brief consideration of connections between salads and discourses of nation and class, this article considers pictorial salads in the context of postmodernism in art, architecture and politics. I propose that the way in which images of these salads are shared and discussed is typical not only of the antagonistic, politicised space of the Russophone internet, but also of the online “prosumption” of images in general, which, I ultimately suggest, does not empower and liber- ate, but rather replicates the constrictive scopic regime of Socialist Realism. Keywords: prosumption, postmodernism, foodways, Russia, image sharing, Internet 2.0, ide- ology, patriotism o one would now dispute that what is important about food is not just how it tastes, but N also what it means. Not only are restaurants, recipes and diets an increasingly promi- nent part of the media landscape we inhabit, but, after about half a century of trying, scholars have finally established that food is a worthy and uncontroversial object of inquiry since, as an element of culture, it can be understood as ‘a system of communication, a body of images, a protocol of usages, situations and behavior’, and that it ‘constitutes an information; it signi- fies’ (Barthes 2008: 29; cf.

The present study investigates how the Soviet past has been mediated in the period between 1991 and 2012 as one element of a prominent structure of feeling in present-day Russian culture. The Soviet past is represented through different mediating arenas – cultural domains and communicative platforms in which meanings are created and circulated. The mediating arenas examined in this study include television, the Internet, fashion, restaurants, museums and the- atre. The study of these arenas has identified common ingredients which are elements of a structure of feeling of the period in question. At the same time, the research shows that the representations of the past vary with the nature of the medium and the genre. The analysis of mediations of the Soviet past in Russian contemporary culture reveals that there has been a change in the representations of the Soviet past during the past twenty years, which roughly correspond to the two decades marked by the presidencies of Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s and of Vladimir Putin in the 2000s (including Dmitrii Medvedev’s term, 2008–2012).

Making the Ordinary Fashionable: New sartorial languages from Russia and China. Hazel Clark and Alla Eizenberg Parsons School of Design The New School New York. Across the twentieth century the politics, histories and culture of both Russia and China resonated with one another, and in addition the dress of both countries served as ‘inspiration’ for Western fashion designers. As we know, this referencing drew in particular on spectacular and extraordinary garments from imperial Russia (e.g. Yves St Laurent’s ‘Russian’ collection 1976/77) and China (Christian Lacroix, Frontière Chinoise F/W 1992/3). It also impacted, in the late 20c, the aesthetic adopted by some emerging Chinese and Russian designers and brands towards self-Orientalization. We can mention in this context the enormous attention given to the work of Chinese haute couture designer Guo Pei in the Metropolitan Museum, Costume Institute exhibition, China Through the Looking Glass (2015), including the dress she designed for Rihanna to wear at the Met Ball. Similarly, Russian designers Ulyana Sergeenko and Vika Gazinskaya became regulars on the Paris haute couture and ready to wear fashion week schedules, with designs referencing Russian imperial and folk dress. Other Chinese and Russian designers, however, have taken less predictable - and arguably more interesting - directions. For this paper we have chosen to look at two - Russian Gosha Rubchinskiy and Chinese Ma Ke. While working with different aesthetics, both have developed design strategies that are informed by ordinary garments and aspects of everyday life in their respective cultures and nations. In a broader sense, they are also affiliated by the historical synergies and political alliances between their two countries, in particular in the first half of the twentieth century, between the Soviet Union and Communist China (the complexities of which we will consider more in the book chapter).
