The journal’s main scope is taxonomy in a broad sense, but includes other disciplines like ecology, evolution, genetics, morphology, palaeontology, parasitology, phylogeny, physiology, and zoogeography. On the basis of these charac- teristics it is confi rmed that 5 previously described species should remain in the genus while the inclusion of P. crassisetosus Marquet & Conde, 1950 is questioned. A new species of Propolyxenus from Southern Australia is described. Key words Myriapoda, Diplopoda, Penicillata, Polyxenida, Polyxenus, new species, distribution Introduction Th e genera Polyxenus and Propolyxenus can be distinguished from all other genera in the family Polyxenidae (Diplopoda, Polyxenida) by the presence of two caudal bundles of trichomes, a fan-shaped arrangement of trichomes dorsal to the caudal bundles (to be referred to subsequently as ornamental trichomes), and caudal trichomes with the same hooked shape (Fig. 1). Th e genus Polyxenus was fi rst described by Latreille (1802/1803). In 1948 Silvestri created the genus Propolyxenus for the type species Propolyxenus aegeus. Silvestri’s description of the genus and the type species is very brief with the only dis- tinguishing character being three rows of trichomes per tergite in contrast to two rows in the genus Polyxenus. Subsequent to P. aegeus, three more species were described in the genus Propolyxenus: P. lawrencei Conde, 1949, P. crassisetosus Marquet & Conde, 1950, and P. forsteri Conde, 1951. Nguyen Duy-Jacquemin (1971) and P. patagonicus (Silvestri, 1903) by Conde & Mas- soud (1975). In this paper the type specimens of P. aegeus are re-examined and the spe- cies redescribed in order to clarify the diagnostic features of the genus Propolyxenus. Th e morphological characters of P. aegeus are compared with those of Polyxenus lagurus (L., 1758) as described by Nguyen Duy-Jacquemin (1982, 1987) and observed in speci- mens of P. lagurus from France. A new species of Propolyxenus from Southern Australia is described. A key is given for identifi cation of species within the genus. Materials and methods Specimens were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. For light mi- croscopy, preparations were made of specimens of P. aegeus and P. australis. Specimens were cleared in 15% potassium hydroxide, heated in a water-bath for 2 minutes at 80° C, then neutralised in 20% acetic acid for 2 minutes, rinsed in distilled water and dehydrated in a series of ethanol baths prior to staining with 1% Fast Green solution to increase contrast. Th e head and body were separated, the body cut open with a sin- gle latero-longitudinal incision and contents removed. After rinsing in 100% ethanol, stained specimens were transferred to 100% isopropanol, then xylene and mounted on slides with DPX. A scanning electron micrograph (SEM) was obtained for an adult male P. australis sp. n. Th e specimen was fi xed in 70% ethanol, prior to being gently mounted on stubs using adhesive tabs, air-dried and sputter coated with gold before being examined with a Philips XL20 scanning electron microscope. Propolyxenus aegeus Silvestri, 1948 Figures 2-12 Material examined: 30 syntypes preserved in alcohol and deposited in the Museo Civi- co di Storia Naturale di Genova, Italy. Th e specimens were labelled ‘Propolyxenus aegeus Silv. Rodi, Pelecano, 29 March 1935’, and comprise 7 adult females, 8 adult males and 1 sub-adult female. Th e sex of a further 14 immature specimens could not be de- termined. Five specimens were damaged. Microscope preparations were made of two adults of each sex for examination of diagnostic features. Revised description Coloration: Body pale yellow due to prolonged immersion in alcohol. Of the small number of trichomes retained, most colourless; a small number in the vertex region of the head dark brown. Measurements: Average body length without caudal bundle: adult males 3.07 mm (N=3), female adults 3.37 mm (N=3). Caudal bundle length 0.5 mm for each sex. Th ese measurements diff er from those reported by Silvestri (body length 4.8 mm) and may refl ect the degree of dehydration of the body since publication of Silvestri’s description 60 years ago (Silvestri 1948). Head (Fig. 2): Six ocelli each side with 3 tergal, 3 laterally placed: 1 anterior, 1 medial and 1 posterior-sternal. This is a basal group of Diplopoda, sister group of all other diplopods (Enghoff, 1984; Sierwald & Bond, 2007). With about 160 known species (Nguyen Duy- Jacquemin & Geoffroy, 2003) the Polyxenida are divided in four families, three of them being known from Europe (Enghoff & Desmond Kime, 2007): Lophoproctidae, distri- buted in Mediterranean Europe; Polyxenidae, present in all Europe; and Synxenidae, only known from Spain. Despite the wide distribution of some species, polyxenids were never cited from mainland Portugal. They were however referenced for Azores, namely Polyxenus lagurus (Lin- naeus, 1758) at the islands of São Miguel and Pico (Condé & Nguyen Duy-Jacquemin, 1994) and Polyxenus fascicula- tus Say, 1821 in Madeira and Selvagens (Enghoff & Des- mond Kime, 2007; Enghoff, in prep.).

The identification of 5 species from a recent collection of 23 specimens from two areas in Israel is given. Two new species of Polyxenida are recorded, including the first species in the family Synxenidae (Phryssonotus sp.) and the first species from the family Polyxenidae, subfamily Macroxeninae (Chilexenus sp.), from Israel. These spe- cies are identified only to genus due to the lack of undamaged adult material. Two species in the family Lophoprocti- dae are also identified, one previously recorded but not described, is now described as Lophoproctus israelensis sp. nov., and Lophoproctinus chichinii Condé, 1951is recorded from Israel for the first time. The fifth species is identified as possibly a new species in the genus Polyxenus and likely to be synonymous with the specimens identified as Polyx- enus lagurus Linnaeus, 1758 in a previous study. This is just the second collection from Israel to be identified and brings the total number of Polyxenida species found in Israel to 8. All 3 families of Polyxenida are represented in this list, together with all 3 subfamilies of the most numerous family, Polyxenidae. Keywords. We gathered at Twin Creeks in the evening for a barbecue dinner and went into the field just before dusk. One of the best times to collect millipedes is early spring on a warm, drizzly night. We knew it was a bit early in the year for things to be active but decided to use the opportunity for our first attempt. We divided into three teams, one team going to Metcalf Bottoms, one went to Ash Hopper trailhead and one Polyxenus fasciculatus. photo by James Cokendolpher worked across from the nature trail near Sugarlands. We sifted leaf litter and searched the residue for critters. We found ten species of millipedes repre- senting eight families. Dr. Richard Hoffman, an expert on Diplopoda who works with the Vir- ginia Museum of Natural History, is identifying and studying the millipede fauna of the Park for the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI). About 900 species have been described from the U.S. He estimates that about 50 to 60 species of millipedes will be found in the Park. ABSTRACT This paper deals with the conceptions, knowledge and attitudes of the inhabitants of the county of Pedra Branca, Bahia State, on the arthropods of the class Diplopoda. Data were collected from February to June 2005 by means of open-ended interviews carried out with 28 individuals, which ages ranged from 13 to 86 years old. It was recorded some traditional knowledge regarding the following items: taxonomy, biology, habitat, ecology, seasonality, and behavior. Results show that the diplopods are classified as “insects”. The characteristic of coiling the body was the most com- mented, as well as the fact that these animals are considered as “poisonous”. In gen- eral, the traditional zoological knowledge of Pedra Branca’s inhabitants concerning the diplopods is coherent with the academic knowledge. These are Diplopoda, Penicillata, the oldest known records of Penicillata because Phryssonotus burmiticus Polyxenidae, (Cockerell, 1917), from Burmese amber, is dated as being from upper Albian. Synxenidae, They belong to the family Polyxenidae. This family contains the recent genus Early and Late Cretaceous, fossil, Polyxenus Latreille, 1803, which is known from Eocene Baltic amber. amber, Electroxenus n. gen. and Libanoxenus n. gen. are very close to the recent genera Electroxenus jezzinensis n. gen., n. sp., of Polyxenidae. The first French fossil Penicillata, discovered in the Libanoxenus hammanaensis Cretaceous amber of Haute-Provence, is also described and referred to the n. gen., n. sp., genus Phryssonotus Scudder, 1885 (sole genus of the family Synxenidae). The Phryssonotus, new genera, recent polyxenid families Polyxenidae and Synxenidae therefore already new species.

Moldenke Headwater streams and their riparian zones are a common, yet poorly understood, component of Pacific Northwest landscapes. I sought to describe the ecological significance of headwater stream riparian zones as habitat for forest-floor invertebrate communities,and to assess how alternative management strategies for riparian zones may impact these communities. I compared community composition of forest-floor invertebratesat five distances along 70 m trans-riparian (stream edge to upsiope) gradients in three treatments:mature forests; clearcuts; and across riparian buffers of 30 m width. In the buffer treatments, I looked forevidence of microclimatic edge effects, and also biological edge effects,as characterized by species distribution and movement patterns across the forest-clearcut boundary. Invertebrateswere collected in pitfall traps, in five replicate blocks of three treatments each, in theWillamette National Forest, OR. Air and soil temperature, and relative humiditywere measured at a subset of pitfall locations at each site.
