Northwest Argentina (custom tour) 13 – 24 November, 2015 Tour leader: Andrés Vásquez Co-guided by Sam Woods Trip Report by Andrés Vásquez; most photos by Sam Woods, a few by Andrés V. Elegant Crested-Tinamou at Los Cardones NP near Cachi; photo by Sam Woods Introduction: Northwest Argentina is an incredible place and a wonderful birding destination. It is one of those locations you feel like you are crossing through Wonderland when you drive along some of the most beautiful landscapes in South America adorned by dramatic rock formations and deep-blue lakes. So you want to stop every few kilometers to take pictures and when you look at those shots in your camera you know it will never capture the incredible landscape and the breathtaking feeling that you had during that moment. Then you realize it will be impossible to explain to your relatives once at home how sensational the trip was, so you breathe deeply and just enjoy the moment without caring about any other thing in life. This trip combines a large amount of quite contrasting environments and ecosystems, from the lush humid Yungas cloud forest to dry high Altiplano and Puna, stopping at various lakes and wetlands on various altitudes and ending on the drier upper Chaco forest. Tropical Birding Tours Northwest Argentina, Nov.2015 p.1 Sam recording memories near Tres Cruces, Jujuy; photo by Andrés V. All this is combined with some very special birds, several endemic to Argentina and many restricted to the high Andes of central South America. Highlights for this trip included Red-throated

  • Avifaunal Inventory of a Southern Amazonian Transitional Forest Site
Bol. Mus. Para. Emílio Goeldi. Cienc. Nat., Belém, v. 6, n. 2, p. 147-161, maio-ago. 2011 Avifaunal inventory of a Southern Amazonian transitional forest site: the São Luiz farm, Mato Grosso, Brazil Inventário da avifauna de uma área em floresta de transição no sul da Amazônia: Fazenda São Luiz, Mato Grosso, Brasil Luiz Augusto Macedo MestreI, II, Juliana RecheteloII, III, Mark Alan CochraneI, Jos BarlowIV I South Dakota State University. Brookings, South Dakota, U.S.A. II Universidade Federal do Paraná. Palotina, Paraná, Brasil III James Cook University. Townsville, Queensland, Austrália IVLancaster University. Lancaster, Lancashire, Inglaterra Abstract: This paper describes the avifauna sampled at the São Luiz farm, in Northern Mato Grosso State, a Southern Brazilian Amazonian forest site. The avifauna was sampled at forested and open sites, between 29 June and 27 July 2008, using point counts, mist-nets and general observations. We recorded 194 bird species within 18 orders and 46 families. The records of this study expanded the known range limits of at least 16 bird species. Despite the need for sampling in other seasons, the rarefaction curves indicate a representative sampling effort. The bird community observed at this site contains most of the species typically associated with Amazonian forests, south of the Amazon, and suggests that ‘transitional forests’ found at this site should be qualified as ‘Amazonian’ when considering their legal status. Our data highlights the importance of this anthropogenically-impacted and poorly-known region of Amazonia. Keywords: Bird checklist. Amazonian Birds. Northern Mato Grosso. Southern Amazon. Resumo: Este estudo descreve a avifauna amostrada na fazenda São Luiz, norte do estado do Mato Grosso, uma área de floresta localizada no sul da Amazônia brasileira.

  • Peru: from the Cusco Andes to the Manu
The critically endangered Royal Cinclodes - our bird-of-the-trip (all photos taken on this tour by Pete Morris) PERU: FROM THE CUSCO ANDES TO THE MANU 26 JULY – 12 AUGUST 2017 LEADERS: PETE MORRIS and GUNNAR ENGBLOM This brand new itinerary really was a tour of two halves! For the frst half of the tour we really were up on the roof of the world, exploring the Andes that surround Cusco up to altitudes in excess of 4000m. Cold clear air and fantastic snow-clad peaks were the order of the day here as we went about our task of seeking out a number of scarce, localized and seldom-seen endemics. For the second half of the tour we plunged down off of the mountains and took the long snaking Manu Road, right down to the Amazon basin. Here we traded the mountainous peaks for vistas of forest that stretched as far as the eye could see in one of the planet’s most diverse regions. Here, the temperatures rose in line with our ever growing list of sightings! In all, we amassed a grand total of 537 species of birds, including 36 which provided audio encounters only! As we all know though, it’s not necessarily the shear number of species that counts, but more the quality, and we found many high quality species. New species for the Birdquest life list included Apurimac Spinetail, Vilcabamba Thistletail, Am- pay (still to be described) and Vilcabamba Tapaculos and Apurimac Brushfnch, whilst other montane goodies included the stunning Bearded Mountaineer, White-tufted Sunbeam the critically endangered Royal Cinclodes, 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Peru: From the Cusco Andes to The Manu 2017 www.birdquest-tours.com These wonderful Blue-headed Macaws were a brilliant highlight near to Atalaya.

Christmas Island: Karst features Helictite, (2001) 37(2): 59-74. Subterranean Fauna of Christmas Island, Indian Ocean W.F. Humphreys and Stefan Eberhard. W.F. Humphreys - Western Australian Museum, Francis Street, Perth, WA 6000, Australia. Email: [email protected] Stefan Eberhard - CaveWorks, P.O. Witchcliffe, WA 6286, Australia. Email: [email protected] Abstract The subterranean environment of Christmas Island is diverse and includes freshwater, marine, anchialine, and terrestrial habitats. The cave fauna comprises swiftlets, and a diverse assemblage of invertebrates, both terrestrial and aquatic, which includes a number of rare and endemic species of high conservation significance. At least twelve species are probably restricted to subterranean habitats and are endemic to Christmas Island. Previously poorly known, the cave fauna of Christmas Island is a significant component of the island's biodiversity, and a significant cave fauna province in an international context. The cave fauna and habitats are sensitive to disturbance from a number of threatening processes, including pollution, deforestation, mining, feral species and human visitors. Keywords: Island karst, biospeleology, stygofauna, troglobites, anchialine, scorpion, Procarididae INTRODUCTION DEFINITIONS As recently as 1995 Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) It has been found useful to classify cave-dwelling ani- was considered to have no specialized subterranean mals according to their presumed degree of ecological/ fauna (Gray, 1995: 68), despite biological collections evolutionary dependence on the cave environment. Many surface-dwelling forms enter caves by chance and having been made since 1887 (especially Andrews while such ‘accidentals’ may survive for some time they et al., 1900). However, in 1996 a specimen of blind do not reproduce underground.

This is not to say that the birds are dull on this tour, far from it. Some of the avian highlights included wonderfully jeweled hummingbirds like Wedge-tailed Hillstar and Red-tailed Comet; getting EXCELLENT views of 4 Tinamou species of, (a rare thing on all South American tours except this one); nearly 20 species of ducks, geese and swans, with highlights being repeated views of Torrent Ducks, the rare and oddly, parasitic Black-headed Duck, the beautiful Rosy-billed Pochard, and the mountain-dwelling Andean Goose. And we should not forget other popular bird features like 3 species of Flamingos on one lake, 11 species of Woodpeckers, including the hulking Cream-backed, colorful Yellow-fronted and minuscule Ochre-collared Piculet on the extension to Iguazu Falls.
