Martha (c1847) Elizabeth (c1850) and Henry (c1851) were baptised together in 1855. Ann (c1840) appears to have avoided recorded baptism, as does Francis (c1854). Mattersey 1841 Mattersey Thorpe 1851 Daughter Ann was convicted of theft in 1856. “Larceny – before convicted of felony” Nottinghamshire Guardian - Thursday 17 April 1856 It’s not clear who the Jane Kipling mentioned is. Hooton Roberts. 1901 Son William was still living with his mother in 1911, at Conisbrough (#311A). William died in 1920. Sheffield Daily Telegraph - Monday 01 March 1920 Frank George (1878) Frank married Edith Morris in 1902. Son Frank William Middleton was born the following year. Harry’s date of death is unknown (a Harry of the right aged died in 1934, but this would not explain the 1945 electoral roll entry; son Harry born in 1933 would not have been included at age 11 or 12). Churchyard, Everton. 1891 Hanwell Lane, Everton. 1901 Joseph and Ann were still living in Everton in 1911 (#230) Joseph died in 1925. William (1865) William married Mary Kendall in 1896 (quarter 2). Son Frederick was born in quarter 3. Hanwell Lane, Everton, 1901 (#311) William died in Doncaster in 1940. Son Frederick enlisted in November 1915 and was posted to the Royal Field Artillery. He did not serve abroad. He was discharged in September 1916 as physically unfit (he had suffered nephritis) National Union of Railwaymen. Register. Doncaster 1939. Doncaster 1947 Urban, Road. Doncaster Frederick died in Doncaster in 1964. George (1868) George married Jane Ann Wraith in 1895. Albion Rd., Ardsley. 1901 (#295) George died in 1933. Son Charles lived in Stainton in the Don Valley. Electoral Roll 1924 He died there in 1968. Son John married Gladys Crossland in 1924. In 1939, he was working on the canals. 1939 Barnsley He died in 1970. Francis (1869) Francis married Ann Elizabeth Fisher in 1892. Sturbanks, Styrrup with Oldcotes. At the time of the 1911 census, Mary was at her parents in Rotherham and Fred was living in Doncaster (#313A) (#312A) The following year, son Stanley Robert was born. Mary died in 1934. 11 Levitt Hagg, Doncaster.1939 In 1947, Fred living with son Stanley and daughter-in-law Hilda. Cecil Avenue, Warmsworth. 1947 Electoral Roll Fred died in 1947. Stanley in 2002. Edwin (1882) Rawmarsh, Yorks. 1901 (#340) Edwin was killed in Flanders in 1917 (see ‘Kiplings in the Great War 1917’) Anne Elizabeth (1884-) (#336) Anne married in 1918. George (1833) George married Selina Spencer in East Retford district in 1855 Wiseton, 1861 He died in 1872. Rawmarsh. 1881 Selina may have remarried the following year. Son William moved to Barrow-in-Furness Barrow. 1891 What happened to him after this is not known. Daughter Ann had three illegitimate children: Arthur (1861), Walter (1868) and Ada. Mattersey Thorpe 1871 Ann senior died in 1876 and grand-daughter Ada in 1879. Ann junior married William Drake in 1876. Thorpe Cottages, Mattersey 1881 Arthur Kipling (1861) Arthur married Annie Bellamy in 1883. Eldest son Harry was born in 1888 at Firbeck, just over the county border in Yorkshire. Firbeck Firbeck Yorks. 1891 Woodsetts Woodsetts, Yorks. 1901 (#233) Woodsetts, Lincolnshire Chronicle - Saturday 22 November 1913 Son Frederick died in 1918. St Georges, Woodsetts.1918 Arthur died in 1920. In 1929, son Harry was charged with offences against an under-age girl. He was acquitted. Sheffield Daily Telegraph - Tuesday 12 March 1929 Son Harry died in 1967 in N Kesteven district, Lincs., son Walter died in 1961 in Rother Valley district, Yorkshire and son George died in 1975. St Georges, Woodsetts. Daughter Mary Elizabeth was living at her fiancé’s home in Eckington, Derbyshire at the time of the 1911 census (#6). She married later the same month. She died in 1951. Walter Kipling (1868) Sheffield Daily Telegraph - Monday 20 April 1885 Walter married Elizabeth Ann Wright in 1888. Woodsetts, Yorks. 1891 Woodsetst. 1901. Youngest son Harry was born in 1907. Woodsetts (#213) Electoral Register. 1925. Walter died in 1938. Woodsetts William (1895) William was working on a farm in 1911, along with his sister (#235). He joined the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. He served in France, being invalided home after being accidentally wounded by a stray bullet from his own side. # William died in 1961 in Worksop district. Leonard (1899) Leonard married Bertha Carnall in 1925. Kiveton Park, Yorks. 1939 Leonard died in 1966. Harry (1907) Harry was a golf professional at Southport. Lancashire Evening Post - Tuesday 14 May 1935 He married Mary Vidal Dunlop at Southport, Lancs. in 1938. Liverpool Evening Express - Monday 27 February 1939 He served as a gunner in the Royal Artillery in WW2. His heavy ant-aircraft battery was stationed at Batavia on Java in early February 1942. Less than a month later, the Japanese invaded, leading to a British and Dutch surrender within nine days. He became a prisoner of war of the Japanese. Later in the year, he was sent to work on the Burma Railway in Thailand, where he died in September 1943 from exhaustion following dysentery and vitamin B3 deficiency. Haddon (clerk), 3 members of the public 4/19/236 Public Forum Residents raised the following: • Increase in precept, cost of village maintenance • Need more affordable housing for young people • Offered to help with maintenance of Mattersey Millennium Gree Chris Bailey, Chair of Governors of Mattersey Primary School gave an update: • £4,000 deficit was excellent outcome in view of financial restrictions • School numbers were now 34 plus 5 in nursery • One teacher was returning from maternity leave and will be job sharing • There are discussions taking place regarding early years provision • Collaboration with Everton will continue and may consider having one Governing body Two Parish Councillors had attended school and were very impressed with the School Council. One had offered to work on the school garden and bring it back into use. 4/19/237 To receive apologies for absence Apologies were accepted from Cllr Wilson. 4/19/238 To receive any new declarations of interest or dispensation requests No declarations were made. 4/19/239 To receive reports from County & District Councillors District Cllr Gray stated that he would be standing as an independent candidate at the forthcoming election. He felt that the Police alert system was not local enough and he hoped to start a new system at Ranskill which could be rolled out to other villages in the future.

    Summary of feedback from Mattersey Future Development Questionnaires Overall Of the 308 questionnaires that were delivered to the households in Mattersey, 55 were returned, giving a response rate for the village of 17.86%. 1. Open Market Housing Numbers of new houses Respondents were asked to indicate the future levels of growth they would like to see in their village. These are the answers received: Answer Number of respondents % of respondents No new housing 25 45.5% 0-10 houses 11 20.0% 10-20 houses 7 12.7% 20-30 new houses 5 9.1% 30-40 houses 2 3.6% 30-40+ 1 1.8% 40+ houses 3 5.5% No answer given 1 1.8% Total 55 100% Taking into consideration all answers, the average (mean) number of new houses that residents wanted in their village was 12.6 houses . However, the most common answer given was no new housing . Types and size of new houses Respondents were asked to mark down which type of housing they believed the village needed in the future. The answer was multiple choice and people were not limited to only providing one answer.
