Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has been established under the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 as a statutory body for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food so as to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, the Authority has a mandate of ensuring safety of food items imported into the country also. The Authority is preparing a Blue Print for Structuring and Implementation of an IT enabled Imported Food Safety System. The Authority has engaged the National Institute of Smart Government under the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology for the design and conceptualization of the IT enabled imported Food Safety System. The project team of NISG has completed the assessment study of the existing system and Global Best practices.

In this context, the Food Safety and Standards Authority proposes to hold Regional Workshops of all stakeholders, including State Ministries/ Departments, State Food Safety Commissioners, Importers associations, Experts and consumer associations associated with the various activities related to import of food items into the country, to update and discuss the outcomes of the As_Is assessment study, benchmarking of Best Practices and the Business process Re- engineering study, and the way forward for development of an integrated IT enabled Imported Food Safety System.

The workshop shall be organised at Surya Hall, The Park, 601, Anna Salai, Chennai, on 19 th April, 2010 from 10.00 AM.
