Historians recognize that Paul was one of the most important men in all of world history. It was largely through his ministry that the message of Christianity was brought to much of the urban society of the Roman Empire within one generation. To better appreciate Paul’s ministry and impact, read the Scriptures, consider and discuss the following questions: 1. We first meet Paul in Scripture when Stephen was being stoned (Acts 7:54-60). At that time he was then called Saul. What role did Saul have in Stephen’s stoning? What impression might the dying Stephen’s words and behavior have on Saul? 2. Though born in Tarsus in Asia Minor, Paul was raised in Jerusalem, where he was a student of the beloved Gamaliel. What was Gamaliel’s attitude to the new sect of Christians? Why might Saul’s attitude differ so markedly from his teacher (Acts 22:3; 5:34-39; cf. 8:3; 9:1-2)? 3. Saul was not seeking the Lord Jesus, but the Lord was seeking him and spoke to Saul as he was on his way to Damascus to further persecute the Christians (Acts 9:1-7). -

BIBUOTHECA SACRA 155 (July-September 1998): 299-315 THE CESSATION OF HEALING MIRACLES IN PAUL'S MINISTRY τ Gary W. Derickson .^L. his article addresses the issue of the cessation of the exer cise of the gift of healing by the apostle Paul on the basis of the historical-theological evidence of the New Testament record. Three lines of evidence suggest that Paul was unable to perform healing miracles near the end of his ministry. The first line of evidence comes from a study of Pauline literature. The second line of evidence is from an evaluation of the record of the three men Paul failed to heal, their circumstances, and arguments that Paul would have healed them if he could. A third line of evidence stems from Hebrews 2:3-4. These three areas of evidence indi cate that miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit were no longer being distributed to the body of Christ by the end of the first century, but that the church was being given gifted individuals (Eph. 2:20; 4:11). Nonmiraculous spiritual gifts, of course, continued to be given to believers by the Holy Spirit. Further, even those who had previously had the ability to perform miracles were no longer able to exercise that gift as they had previously done. God's inter ventions through individuals gradually ceased in the waning years of the first century. MIRACLES AND MIRACLE WORKERS The range of opinion on the issue of miracle workers is spread between those who believe God continues to work miracles today in the same manner and number as in the first century1 and Gary W. -

Paul requested that people pray for him, his ministry, and his effectiveness in preaching the good news about Jesus. Paul also said that people should commit themselves wholeheartedly to prayer and to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Since our battles are most often against cosmic powers in the heavenly places and not against human adversaries (see Ephesians 6:12), we need prayer to win these battles, overcome temptations, and understand the true meaning of the Word of God. -

Remember my chains. Grace be with you.” Colossians 4:16-18 Christian Standard Bible God’s Church is truly amazing. He draws together people from a variety of backgrounds, passions, and abilities and unites them into the one Body of Christ, an unstoppable force empowered by the Holy Spirit and equipped with His grace in such a way that the gates of hell cannot stand against it. Under Christ’s lordship, the church is a network of relationships connecting people into a community to carry the Gospel until He returns. People in the church have the wonderful privilege of being a part of something greater than themselves. They have the opportunity to glorify and serve God. They also have the joy of enriching one another’s lives as they work together and minister to each other. In the closing verses of Colossians, Paul reflected upon some of the people in the church who had served with him and ministered to him. Through his reflections, he highlighted three principles about people in the church. -

The apostle Paul is used as a heuristic model of the ideal ancient traveller. His first journey in provincial Galatia— geographical Pamphylia, Pisidia, and Phrygia—is examined, particularly as it relates to suggested routes and time of travel. It will utilise Bekker-Nielsen’s pioneering 3D methodology that applies Naismith’s rule to produce more objective outcomes. Practical issues related to ancient travel, such as equipment, load, and weather, will also be explored. This investigation will help to refine travel times and itineraries, and thus hopefully produce more accurate Pauline chronologies. Keywords: Paul’s first journey; ancient travel; Naismith’s rule; Via Sebaste Introduction “I have been on frequent journeys experiencing dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, … dangers in the city, dangers in the countryside, dangers at sea, … fatigue and hardship, frequent sleepless nights, hunger and thirst, frequent missed meals, cold and exposure.”1 Paul’s descriptive summary could easily sum up the vicissitudes of travellers in Asia Minor during the Roman period.
