Derickson .^L. his article addresses the issue of the cessation of the exer­ cise of the gift of healing by the apostle Paul on the basis of the historical-theological evidence of the New Testament record. Three lines of evidence suggest that Paul was unable to perform healing miracles near the end of his ministry. The first line of evidence comes from a study of Pauline literature. The second line of evidence is from an evaluation of the record of the three men Paul failed to heal, their circumstances, and arguments that Paul would have healed them if he could. A third line of evidence stems from Hebrews 2:3-4. These three areas of evidence indi­ cate that miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit were no longer being distributed to the body of Christ by the end of the first century, but that the church was being given gifted individuals (Eph. 2:20; 4:11). Nonmiraculous spiritual gifts, of course, continued to be given to believers by the Holy Spirit. Further, even those who had previously had the ability to perform miracles were no longer able to exercise that gift as they had previously done. God's inter­ ventions through individuals gradually ceased in the waning years of the first century.     TMSJ 14/2 (Fall 2003) 263-286 CESSATIONISM, “THE GIFTS OF HEALINGS,” AND DIVINE HEALING Richard L. Mayhue Senior Vice President and Dean Professor of Theology and Pastoral Ministries The study of divine healing must include the tragic abundance of false teachers with false teachings and false practices, who claim biblical authority, but upon closer examination are clearly not of God. Do “gifts of healings” mentioned in 1 Cor 12:9, 28, 30 still operate today as in NT times? This sign-gift ceased with the close of the NT canon. Does God still heal as He did in both the OT and the NT? An inductive study of the biblical record (including the OT, Gospels, Acts, and NT Epistles) establishes unmistakable characteristics of genuine divine healing. The biblical standards become the measure by which alleged contemporary divine- healing claims should be judged, whether of God or not. Next, God’s ultimate healing promise of salvation in 1 Peter 2:24 deserves attention. In context, the passage speaks of spiritual healing (salvation), not physical healing. Finally, a series of theological observations lead to the practical conclusion that Christians should focus on the spiritual/eternal rather than the physical/temporal. When God does heal today, it will not be through human agency, and it will be characterized as were His healings recorded in Scripture. * * * * * Regarding the idea of cessationism, a recent publication contained this remarkable comment.     LUKE THE JEW? by Avram Yehoshua THE SEED OF ABRAHAM The racial lineage of Luke, the writer of the Gospel and also the Book of Acts that bear his name, has been seen as Gentile by most Christians because of what Colossians 4:7-14 states, but there are some who oppose this and teach that Luke was a Jew.1 Thomas McCall is one such person and he bases his fanciful position on the amount of pages that Luke writes in the New Testament (in other words, Luke has more pages than any other NT writer, amassing about 27% of the NT), and so McCall asks, ‘How else could Luke have written that much if he were a Gentile?’ With a few more superficial rhetorical, but fact-less questions like that, some arguments from silence, and a highly imaginative interpretation of Colossians 4:11, McCall concludes; “we must infer that Luke was a Jew. The idea that he was a Gentile appears to be based on nothing more than wishful thinking and tradition. The biblical evidence strongly sup- ports the position that Luke was a Jew, and we should always believe the Scriptures over tradition, when there is a conflict between the two.”2 (emphasis in italics are mine noted for further discussion) I strongly agree that we should ‘always believe the Scriptures over tradition,’ but after reviewing Mc- Call’s article it appears that he has absolutely no understanding of what constitutes biblical evidence to support his position. Colossians 4:7-14 is the scriptural foundation for understanding that Luke was a Gentile, and there’s nothing in Scripture to support that Luke was a Jew.

After Paul’s arrest, imprisonment, and trip to Rome, Tychicus was a helpful messenger and representative for Paul to various churches. He carried Paul’s letters to the Ephesians, and possibly the second letter to the Corinthians. Legend has it that Tychicus became Bishop at Chalcedon in Asia Minor, and later died a martyr. B. Onesimus (Colossians 4:9): The runaway slave that became a Christian under Paul. He is the subject of the Book of Philemon. Onesimus had stolen some of his master’s money and left. He encountered Paul, probably at Rome, and ministered to Paul as a servant. Onesimus was recommended to Philemon as a Christian brother, not as a slave, because of his conversion to Christ. Tradition has it that Onesimus became a trusted and respected leader in the church, although the legends are confusing and could refer to several persons of the same name.

There are two aspects of the overall picture of Jesus’ miracles that are important to notice 1. The miracles of Jesus were upon people and before people - Jesus didn’t heal sick dogs, hurt oxen or fix broken carts - Jesus didn’t restore lost money or fix bad investment - Of the specific miracles that Jesus did, they were upon outward and visible things that the crowds could see, know and test. Often they were upon people that were known in villages - blindness, demon possession, paralysis, leprosy, deafness, fevers—those were all observable handicaps that the multitudes could see healed - there are no examples of Jesus healing cancer, ulcers, bad hearts—those “internal” problems are much harder to observe and to “witness” 2.
