Publicado por: Joaquín Borges-Triana Esto de llevar muchos años en el asunto de seguir lo que pasa en un género musical, lo priva a uno del candor o inocencia con que, en un primer momento, nos acercábamos a la música de nuestra predilección. Como dice el refrán, más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo y, a tono con ello, tengo la impresión de que me estoy volviendo un veterano al que pocos trabajos discográficos logran quitarle el sueño. Justo lo anterior es lo que me sucedía con Adrenaline Mob y sus dos primeras producciones fonográficas, es decir, los discos Omerta y Coverta. Esos dos materiales me transmitían la sensación de que la banda era solo un producto (en la línea del muy exitoso grupo Nickelback) diseñado por la industria a fin de que fuese consumido por grandes audiencias, sobre todo en el mercado estadounidense. Su álbum del presente 2014, titulado Men of Honor, sigue siendo una propuesta que transita entre una sonoridad hard, el heavy clásico y momentos muy groove, a lo que se añaden algunas power baladas en el estilo de finales del decenio de los 80 de la anterior centuria. Si bien tengo total conciencia de que este material no va a ser la quintaesencia del rock y que no aporta nada nuevo, debo admitir que oír el disco se me ha vuelto un adictivo en semanas recientes. Publicado por el sello Century Media Records, Men of Honor ha visto la luz en dos formatos: un CD tradicional y otro en lo que se conoce como un Digibook. Para esta grabación, el grupo lo integran el vocalista Russell Allen, Mike Orlando en la guitarra (los únicos fundadores del proyecto que continúan en el ensamble), el bajista John Moyer y Anthony Jude Pero en la batería. Mob is back, el tema que inicia el fonograma, arranca con una batería atronadora y unos impactantes riffs guitarrísticos. El solo de Mike Orlando es excelente y de lo mejor del álbum en cuanto a desarrollo instrumental. Por su parte, Come on get up es un buen ejemplo de groove metal, en él la base de batería y bajo atacan con la fuerza que tipificará en su conjunto la grabación, en la que Russell Allen se mueve con asombrosa soltura entre un canto agresivo y melódico por momentos. Dearly departed me retrotrae a inicios de los años 90, en un estilo muy hard roquero en el que potencia y melodía logran congeniar sin el menor problema. Con breve pero virtuoso solo de la guitarra, pienso que en la pieza las palmas se las lleva lo realizado por el bajista John Moyer. En el caso de Behind these eyes, estamos ante una power balada en la que lo eléctrico y lo acústico se integran en perfecta simbiosis, transmisora de un sentimiento que me hace evocar el grupo Mr. Big en su etapa dorada de hace ya más de 20 años. Los aires fuertes retornan con Let it go, de nuevo con los lineamientos clásicos hardrockeros, ideales para que Russell evidencie su potencial como uno de los vocalistas metaleros de mayor impacto en la actualidad. Feel the adrenalina nos enseña un potente y bien construido riff principal y clasifica dentro de lo que los españoles denominan un corte muy cañero. A continuación toca el turno al número que da nombre al disco, Men of Honor, en el que A.J. Pero sobresale en la utilización del doble bombo y Russell Allen vuelve a ofrecer lecciones como excelente vocalista. En el caso de Crystal clear se trata de otra balada, pero la que no me parece que aporte algo singular al CD. En tanto, House of lies es un corte en el que prevalece el costado rítmico. Ya casi al final del álbum nos encontramos con Judgment, donde Russell asume en determinados pasajes el canto gutural, con el respaldo de uno de los más intensos riffs de la grabación. Finalmente, Fallin’to pieces es también una balada, en la que la voz se mueve de superficies suaves a otras más ásperas.
