PASSOVER south african The Jewish Report wishes you Chag Sameach V’Kasher jewish report www.sajewishreport.co.za Photographs that change the world

Last week, Jonathan Klein, CEO and founder of Getty Images, and former Davidian who matriculated in 1977, spoke to a capacity audience at King David Linksfield, about photographs that changed the world. Klein, who currently lives in New York, founded Getty Images in 1995 in partnership with Mark Getty. Today it yields some $2,8 billion annually, and employs over 140 000 photographers on a freelance basis internationally. It was the first company in the world to licence images on-line. He spoke of how photography has been democratised by camera phones, low-priced digital cameras and social media. “Images do not change the world. People do. Since the advent of photography, images have moved people to take action to change the world. The intimacy of a single photograph can resonate across the world. Across generations. Across cultural barriers. This school is where it all started,” he added, referring to King David. “It was here that values of philanthropy and competitiveness were instilled in me.” (PHOTOGRAPH BY ILAN OSSENDRYVER)

4 SA JEWISH REPORT News 06 - 20 April 2012 Jewish community proposes changes to Info Bill in Parliament

The SAJBD submission on the Protection of State Information Bill, in which the Board makes a case for a “public interest defence”, cited several judgments from the European Court of Human Rights that support a public interest defence. It urged for such a defence to be included in the SA legislation.

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL WONDERFULLY ENTERTAINING

An elite group of British stars, which includes Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson, have been assembled for John Madden’s enchanting production, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Ol Parker’s script, adapted from Deborah Moggach’s novel, is superbly written, with a number of small, but intriguing sub-plots that keep one perpetually engaged – even with its odd contrivance. It’s a good-natured comedy about British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retire- ment to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive in Jaipur to find the palace a shell of its former self. The film looks at how the various individ- uals, all saddled with their own problems, are forced to come to grips with their new envi- ronment.
