Resilience to climate change: adaptation strategies for the water supply system of Formia, Gaeta (Province of Latina, Central Italy) Azzurra Lentini1 and the De Caterini Giovanni, Cima Ennio, Manni Rino, Della Ventura Giancarlo* 1UGR Universidad de Granada , Italy ([email protected]) *A full list of authors appears at the end of the abstract The aqueduct that serves the municipalities of Formia, Gaeta (province of Latina, Italy), for which “ATO 4” Integrated Urban Water Management Agency is responsible, is supplied by two important karst sources fed by the western Aurunci Mountains: Mazzoccolo spring, with an average flow rate of 1100 l/s, and Capodacqua di Spigno spring, whose average flow rate is 1300 l/s. Although these sources were already used in ancient Roman times and the quality of their water is excellent, the precipitation regime modifications, caused by climate changes, has exacerbated the following problems: a decrease in the flow rates of the springs caused by the cyclical reduction of winter rainfall. an increase of turbidity that makes the water temporarily unfit for human consumption. In order to mitigate these problems affecting a resident population of about 150,000 people, Acqualatina S.p.A. – the water service provider – has promoted a series of unpublished geological, hydrogeological and geophysical studies to increase the knowledge of the hydrogeological aspects and to find additional sources of supply to improve the existing system. We studied, therefore, a strategy aimed at diversifying the water supply by connecting the adjacent areas to the main water network and by identifying new aquifers in the area that were not affected by the aforementioned problems. We hereby present the results of the research carried out before and during the construction of the wellfield called "25 Ponti" located in the plain of Formia, in the coastal area near the Tomb of Cicero (Tomba di Cicerone) archaeological site. Four (4) wells with a depth ranging between 55m and 100m and four (4) monitoring piezometers were drilled which intercepted a pressurized aquifer underlying Pleistocene marine terrace deposits, with a thickness ranging between 20m and 75m, which act as an aquiclude. The quality of the water was excellent from a physical chemical and bacteriological point of view, with different chemical properties compared to Mazzoccolo and Capodacqua springs. The first work carried out during the 2017 water crisis showed an increase in salinity over time, potentially suggesting saltwater intrusion (Sappa, 2019). In collaboration with D.I.C.E.A., the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering of “La Sapienza” University in Rome, the groundwater was monitored to verify, and thus avoid, any saltwater intrusion. To this end, two wells with a total flow rate of about 50 l/s were commissioned and remained active for a period of 8 months (August 2019 - March 2020). About 120 water samples were analyzed from a chemical and isotopic point of view, while the piezometric trend, the electrical conductivity and temperature were recorded by means of multiparameter probes. The results obtained showed that the increased mineralization of the aquifer follows a seasonal trend regulated by the groundwater extraction from the wells that, in some periods of the year, affects the regulated reserves. This seasonal phenomenon was also confirmed when monitoring was performed in absence of pumping. To date, the change in salinity is believed to be due to the extraction of deep waters rather than to seawater intrusion. The Circeo National Park lies in a territory that was deeply shaped by human activity, and represents one of the few remaining patches of plain wetland habitat in Central Italy. In this study distribution and few demographic information of the amphibians in the Park were provided. Seven species and 25 bibliographic and 84 original breeding sites were recorded, and population size estimations were carried out for a population of these three species: Pelophylax sinkl esculentus, Bufo balearicus and Rana dalmatina. For the studied populations of pool frog and green toad the oper- ational sex ratio and the demographic effective population size was also estimated. For Rana dalmatina, which is strictly associated to forest environment, a positive and significant correlation between the number of egg clutches and maxi- mum depth of the swamps was found. The State plain forest is the most important habitat for amphibians’ conservation in the park. The occurrence of dangerous alien species was investigated and they are evaluated as the major threat for amphibians in the park, especially the crayfish Procambarus clarkii in the State plain forest.

This work was the beginning of a new preventive school health service aimed at the prophylaxis of Cooley's disease. In 23 places investigated in Latium, 17 724 students were examined, 13 354 of whom were in Rome and 4370 elsewhere. The mean percentage of co-operation was 70% and the mean percentage of thalassaemia 2.42%. Thalassaemic students were invited to attend the centre for a check-up along with their families: about half had already come in by the end of June 1976. All students examined, whether normal or thalassaemic, have received written results of the tests. The screening survey aroused notable interest and obtained wide approval both at school and at home. The news of being thalassaemia carriers, even if not welcome, was never the cause of family tragedy. copyright.     Territorio e popolazione La provincia di Latina si estende per 2.250 kmq, è costituita da 33 comuni e una popolazione residente di 569.664 abitanti (Maschi 280.314 e Femmine 289.350), di cui 42.821 stranieri (Fonte Dati ISTAT al 31 dicembre 2013) Il territorio, diviso tra aree collinari, montuose e piane costiere comprende anche le isole dell’arcipelago pontino. Il 67% della popolazione risiede in pianura, il 32% in collina e l’1% circa in montagna e nelle isole dell’arcipelago pontino. La densità abitativa della provincia di Latina è di 245 abitanti/kmq con una variabilità di 722 abitanti/kmq nel comune di Gaeta e di 17 abitanti/kmq nel comune di Campodimele. La provincia di Latina si caratterizza per una popolazione giovane con un’età media di 42,7 anni e un indice di vecchiaia (i.v.) pari a 133 il più basso del Lazio. Seppur più lento rispetto alle altre province laziali, è comunque emergente il progressivo invecchiamento della popolazione dovuto alla diminuzione del tasso di natalità e al contemporaneo aumento della sopravvivenza e speranza di vita. Dall’analisi degli indicatori di struttura della popolazione per zone altimetriche emerge che le classi d’età più giovani dai 15 ai 64 anni prevalgono in pianura e in collina. In montagna e nelle isole prevale la popolazione di età superiore ai 65 anni.Il territorio dell’Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale di Latina è organizzato in 5 Distretti Sanitari. Il Distretto 1 si caratterizza per un territorio prevalentemente pianeggiante, una popolazione giovane e un’ elevata presenza di stranieri, che nel comune di Aprilia raggiunge l’11,2% della popolazione.

La ricchezza dei nostri 362 km di costa, da Montalto a Minturno, con le 11 bandiere blu conquistate, quasi il doppio rispetto al 2012, con la sua varietà di luoghi e la sua storia antica e nobile saranno pilastri su cui costruire il Lazio del futuro. Per questo, la Regione investe con ancora più forza su questo enorme patrimonio. Dal 2013 al 2020, abbiamo finanziato 84 opere di riqualificazione delle nostre località costiere, con altre 12 in fase di chiusura, per un totale di oltre 48 milioni di euro di investimento. Inoltre, con oltre 51 milioni di euro, stiamo finanziando 38 interventi di difesa delle coste, tuttora in corso. E proprio su questo tema ci stiamo dotando di un piano generale di difesa dell’intero litorale laziale, redatto dall’Università di Roma Tre, che ci consentirà di estendere a tutto il Lazio il programma di lotta all’erosione. Adesso è il momento di raddoppiare i nostri sforzi. Con il Bando 2020-21 mettiamo in campo un nuovo piano da oltre 21 milioni di euro per 14 progetti in 15 comuni del litorale: nuove piste ciclabili, percorsi pedonali, sistemazione dei lungomare, valorizzazione di aree di pregio e parchi riqualificati.
