Some entries have been removed, added, or modified to better fit this format. The DC universe is long and storied one, in more ways than one. It’s a universe filled with adventure around every corner, not least among them on Earth, an unassuming but cosmically significant planet out of the way of most space territories. Heroes and villains, from the bottom of the Dark Multiverse to the top of the Monitor Sphere, endlessly struggle for justice, for power, and for control over the fate of the very multiverse itself. It was a pleasure to meet and talk with each of them. For obvious reasons, I would not have been able to finish this dissertation without their help. This dissertation benefited greatly from guidance by members of my dissertation committee: Maria Charles, Fernando Lopez-Alves, Jennifer Earl, and Nelson Lichtenstein. I consider myself very fortunate to have such skilled and friendly scholars on my committee. Each member made unique contributions and all made me a better researcher and writer. My co-chairs, Maria Charles and Fernando Lopez-Alves were real champions. I am particularly grateful to them for encouraging me to do the hard work of publishing findings from my thesis research, which later helped me make critical connections with other outside scholars.

Free Trade & Family Values: Kinship Networks and the Culture of Early American Capitalism Rachel Tamar Van Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Rachel Tamar Van All Rights Reserved. ABSTRACT Free Trade & Family Values: Kinship Networks and the Culture of Early American Capitalism Rachel Tamar Van This study examines the international flow of ideas and goods in eighteenth and nineteenth century New England port towns through the experience of a Boston-based commercial network. It traces the evolution of the commercial network established by the intertwined Perkins, Forbes, and Sturgis families of Boston from its foundations in the Atlantic fur trade in the 1740s to the crises of succession in the early 1840s. The allied Perkins firms and families established one of the most successful American trading networks of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and as such it provides fertile ground for investigating mercantile strategies in early America. An analysis of the Perkins family’s commercial network yields three core insights. First, the Perkinses illuminate the ways in which American mercantile strategies shaped global capitalism. The strategies and practices of American merchants and mariners contributed to a growing international critique of mercantilist principles and chartered trading monopolies. While the Perkinses did not consider themselves “free traders,” British observers did. Their penchant for smuggling and seeking out niches of trade created by competing mercantilist trading companies meant that to critics of British mercantilist policies, American merchants had an unfair advantage that only the liberalization of trade policy could rectify.

  • Annual Report
OUR STRENGTH IS IN OUR UNITY 1 2019 ANNUAL REPORT 2 OUR STRENGTH IS IN OUR UNITY Letter from the President Dear Friends: This has been a year when we had to fight, night and day, for the soul of this country, when it was entirely clear that our rights, our dignity, and our future were on the line. When our own government put the health care families rely on at risk, tried to gag health care providers from even saying the word “abortion,” wreaked havoc on our country’s family planning network, denied basic services to impoverished immigrant families, attacked the school lunch program, sanctioned discrimination against the trans community, and tore asylum-seeking families apart. Some of the Trump administration’s most cruel initiatives that the courts had temporarily blocked took effect, making our country meaner and more divided and putting our future at risk. The National Partnership fought back, protecting and whenever possible building on our gains. We used every means at our disposal to continue the progress. Our victories on paid family and medical leave, pregnancy discrimination, fair pay, minimum wage, paid sick days and other issues continued in state after state. At the federal level, we beat back attack after attack on our health care. We’ve intensified our work to stop disparities in maternity care and maternal health, strengthen the #MeToo movement, and fight bigotry, racism and discrimination in all its forms. We stood up for the free and fair elections that are the foundation of our democracy. We’ve broken down silos in our work and are more purposefully connecting the issues, so more people will understand that wage discrimination affects our ability to access quality health care, lack of paid sick days impedes access to health care and imposes more barriers to abortion services, lack of paid family and medical leave particularly traps women and families of color in poverty, and the inability to access reproductive care prevents women and families from thriving.
