Et mul aga oli võimalik selle käsikirja- ga kui füüsilise objektiga tegeleda, võlgnen tänu Tallinna Linnaarhiivile ja eriti Tiina Kalale. Siiski oleks töö jäänud poolikuks, kui Rich ard Newhauser poleks mul võimaldanud kasutada oma märkmeid ja Eestis viibimise ajal juhtinud tähelepanu mitmetele olulistele detailidele käsikirja juures. Tema konsultatsioonid on olnud töö valmimise juures hin- damatu väärtusega. Raamatu kodikoloogilise poole kirjelda- misel olid mulle abiks Rene Haljasmäe märkused, säilitamis- alaste tähelepanekute ja kõige erinevamatel teemadel inspi- reerivate vestluste eest tänan Kurmo Konsat. Samamoodi on mind palju aidanud nii sisulise vestluse kui toimetamise ja asjalike nõuannetega Anu Lepp ja Pärtel Piirimäe. Tractatus de oculo mõistmiseks vajaliku fi losoofi lise teeraja kätt ejuha- tamise eest tänan Eduard Parhomenkot. Toetuse ja võima- luse eest sellise teemaga teaduse ja religiooni problemaa- tika raames tegeleda tänan Anne Kulli, kelle osavõtlikkus on mul võimaldanud akadeemilises sfääris üldse püsida. Akadeemilises sfääris siiani püsida on aidanud mind ka mu perekonna – fi losoofi line – kannatlikkus. Minu juhendaja Urmas Pett i on andnud mulle selle väitekirja kirjutamiseks hädavajaliku mõtt eraamistuse ning vestlused temaga sun- disid mind mitmeid olulisi momente selle töö juures ümber hindama – ilma tema heade nõuanneteta oleks see töö tõe- näoliselt kirjutamata jäänud. Lõpuks aga tahan tänada Marju Lepajõed, kelle töö oli paleo- graafi a, ümberkirjutuse ja tõlke valmimise juures otsustava tähtsusega – tema parandusteta oleks tulemus olnud prae- gusest palju halvem.     Philosophical Disputations at the University of Tartu Õäìó–ÕßÕþ: Boundaries of a Discipline Meelis Friedenthala,c , Pärtel Piirimäe b,c aUniversity of Tartu Library bInstitute of History and Archaeology, University of Tartu c Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study e article focuses on the denitions and divisions of philosophical disciplines in the disputations presented at the University of Tartu during the rst two periods of its existence: Academia Gustaviana (Õäìó–Õä¢ä) and Academia Gustavo-Carolina (ÕäÉþ–ÕßÕþ). e classications of philosophy in Tartu are studied in the context of competing traditions of classifying knowledge and the spread of novel pedagogical methods in early modern Europe. ese trends were also reected in the univer- sity statutes that were directly borrowed from the University of Uppsala, the par- ent institution of the academy in Tartu. e article shows that a strong emphasis on Ramist methods of teaching in the Õäìó constitution and a similar prominence given to Aristotelianism in the ÕäÉ constitution aected, to some extent, the pri- orities given to certain disciplines in the faculties but did not always determine the division of responsibilities between professors nor the conceptual tools and con- tents of instruction. Introduction: Systems of knowledge in early modern Europe In early modern European academia, new dialectical or logical methods were introduced with the aim of constructing philosophical systems to fa- cilitate the introduction of a given subject to students. Classication and denition were viewed as two of the three central purposes of logic, or as in- struments of human knowledge (next to inductio or demonstration) (Freed- man ÕÉÉÉ, ó).

    Ajalooline Ajakiri, 2014, 1 (147), 85–114 The first year of the Academia Gustaviana print shop as seen through the history of paper Anu Lepp Abstract Watermarks and paper evidence are useful tools for researching manuscripts as well as printed books on paper, and not only for dating and identifying au- thenticity, but for studying the history of documents and printed books as ma- terial objects themselves. Th e present paper is based on the publications print- ed in Tartu in 1632, the fi rst year of operation of the Swedish-era University of Tartu print shop, and the paper used in them. Th e purpose is to study the wa- termarks gathered from all survived copies of publications deposited in Esto- nia, to discuss the possible origins of the paper and the principles for its acqui- sition and use, and to draw some conclusions concerning general conditions of printing and the printer’ personal contacts and preferences during the early days of the print shop. The tasks assigned by lawmaker to the Academy have not changed in the past couple of decades, while the interest displayed by representatives of the state to making use of the competence of the Academy has diminished.
