COURSE DESCRIPTION A study of the appropriation of Scripture's rich literary texture for preaching today. The student will investigate literary genres of Old Testament law, narrative, prophecy, praise and wisdom and New Testament narrative, parable, epistle, speech, and prophetic-apocalyptic and their promise for preaching. He will develop and execute, from study through preached sermon, an exegetical- homiletical method designed to produce effective sermons which embody the literary-rhetorical moves of the various Biblical genre. Develop an understanding of the basic pattern of Scripture =s main literary genre and their subgenre: Old Testament BLaw, Narrative, Prophecy, Praise, Wisdom; New Testament B Narrative, Parable, Epistle, Speeches, Prophetic-Apocalyptic. 2. Develop an understanding of the explanatory and persuasive function Bthe literary-rhetorical moves Bof the basic components of each genre and subgenre. HOM 9413 [Summer 2011] - 2 3. Develop an ability to analyze any portion of Scripture in terms of the form and function of the genre/subgenre in which it participates so that its Aliterary-rhetorical moves @ are completely revealed. 4. Develop an ability to perceive and appreciate the values which genre analysis findings have for homiletical appropriation 5. Develop an ability to choose a homiletical method for preaching a particular passage which will maximize the contribution of its genre/subgenre for persuasive communication. 6. Demonstrate, from study through preached sermon, the use of an exegetical-homiletical method which produces effective sermons which embody the literary-rhetorical moves of the various Biblical genre. 7. Develop an appreciation for and motivation to preach sermons that fully utilize the possibilities of Biblical literary genre. IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Pre-Campus Assignments a. Textbook Reading : Read each of the textbooks listed above and be prepared to discuss them in class. As you read take notes of books = contents which can provide the raw material for creating one page matrixes of Literary Genre Form & Function for the following genre categories (a sample on epistle is attached): Old Testament (Using Sandy & Giese and Kaiser) 1) Narrative (should apply to New Testament as well) 2) Law (e.g. covenant or legislation) 3) Prophets (e.g., announcements of judgment or oracles of salvation) 4) Praise (e.g., psalm of praise or a lament) 5) Wisdom (e.g., proverb or non-proverb form) New Testament (Using Bailey & Vanderbroek, Larkin and Arthurs) 1) Parable 2) Speeches 3) Prophetic-Apocalyptic NOTE: 4) Epistle Matrix is provided as a sample. Submit a reading checklist at the beginning of the campus period indicating your progress in completing the assignment. b. Sermon Manuscripts or Outlines Selection : Select and bring with you several (perhaps five to seven) sermon manuscripts or outlines preached in the last three to five years. If possible, choose materials in which you preached on preaching portions representing various literary genre of Scripture. c. DUE DATE: Submit Reading Checklist 9 am MON June 27, 2011. 2. On-Campus Assignments a. Literary Genre Homiletical Strategizing : Using the sermon materials brought to the course (b above), strategize how the form and function of the literary genre of the preaching HOM 9413 [Summer 2011] - 3 portion for one of your sermons should affect the framing and homiletical structure of that sermon. Do the same thing with a second sermon based on a preaching portion from the other Testament and for a different literary genre. Be prepared to summarize in two or three minutes the entire sermon as it was originally preached. Mention the text, subject/theme, purpose, and the sermon plan/outline. Then, explain two to three effects study of the preaching portion =s literary genre has had on your revisiting of the sermon and tell how you believe these will make the sermon a more textually faithful and effectively persuasive. The entire presentation, including the sermon summary, should not take over seven or eight minutes. You will be responsible for two of these class presentations. One is due on Wednesday and the other is due on Thursday . b. Preaching a ARefreshened @ Sermon with the Aid of Literary Genre Study : Take one of your sermon manuscripts and refresh it with the aid of Literary Genre study. Preach it in class and view the video tape with a peer evaluator. Serve as a peer evaluator for another class member =s videotaped sermon. Due on Friday . 3. Post-Campus Assignments a. Sermon Series. Prepare and preach three sermons from a Bible book on three preaching portions representing three different literary genres. Submit the following to the instructor: 1) A video of the actual preaching of one sermon and an audio tape of the other two. 2) The written outline or manuscript of each sermon. 3) A brief two-page paper (double-spaced) explaining the role the form and function of the literary genre played in your framing and development of the homiletical structure for each sermon. DUE DATE : The post-campus requirements are due in the instructor's office by 5 pm, Friday, August 26, 2011. Include your name and return address on all assignments. NOTE : b. The video and the two audio tapes will be returned along with comments from the instructor regarding the sermons and the written assignments. V. COURSE EVALUATION/GRADE DISTRIBUTION 25% Reading 10% In-class Literary Genre Homiletical Strategizing presentations (2 at 2 hrs. each) 15% In-class Preaching a ARefreshened @ Sermon with the Aid of Literary Genre Study 50% Sermon Series (three sermons): preparation, presentation, and 2 page explanation/ evaluation for each. STUDENT WORKLOAD & DISABILITY SERVICES A class valued at 3 semester hours requires about 135 clock hours of work including the time spent in class, approximately 27-28 hours.     Literary Techniques: The following literary techniques are introduced in sequence at various points in the year, and then reviewed and practiced as the year progresses. Understanding how formal techniques of literature are used by an author to present his or her content in a particular way involves use of the fourth level or sixth level of cognitive tasks in Bloom’s taxonomy, and involves cross- curricular integration as the same sort of questions are asked in Literature class as well.     Power, Eros, and Biblical Genres Christine Mitchell What Is Genre? But something created is always created out of something given.… What is given is completely transformed in what is created. (Bakhtin 1986:119–20). Biblical form criticism supposes that genres are givens: they are forms that give the key to content. This is the reason there is such concern for trac- ing, say, the development of apocalyptic literature as a genre. Genre simply exists as a set form. This particular kind of deductive genre theory, seen in lit- erary studies most clearly in the work of Northrop Frye (247–48), is implicit in almost all work on biblical genres. We may consider, with Thomas Beebee, that genre theory has moved through four phases: (1) ancient-through- Renaissance “production-oriented” theory, that is, “genre as rules”; (2) early modern classification theory, looking at the growth and change in genre, that is, “genre as species”; (3) early twentieth-century theory, looking at the textual forms and features that indicate genre, that is, “genre as patterns of textual features”; and (4) late twentieth-century theory, locating the meaning of genre not in the intention of the author or in literary history or in the features of the text, but in the reader/s of the text, that is, “genre as reader conventions” (2–3). In this broad scheme, biblical genre theory is located roughly in the third phase, although the concern with tracing the development of a genre (like apocalyptic from prophecy) is located squarely in the second phase. But before biblical scholars start jumping on the fourth-stage bandwagon (i.e., genre as reader-created), it should be noted that with a revived interest in genre theory in literary studies, most contemporary genre theory has moved into a new phase, one that locates genre both in text and in reader, in text and in context, and in the combination and recombination of genres and frag- ments with each other (Cohen 2003).

Bringing together a close analysis of biblical prophetic texts with contemporary theoretical work on masculinity, embodiment, and prophecy, I argue that the male bodies of the Hebrew prophets subvert the normative representation of masculine embodiment in the biblical text. While the Hebrew Bible establishes a relatively rigid norm of hegemonic masculinity – emphasizing strength, military valor, beauty, and power over others in speech and action – the prophetic figures while clearly male, do not operate under these masculine constraints.

The five books in the order in which they are placed are: • Job • Psalms • Proverbs • Ecclesiastes • Song of Songs The books deserve to be grouped together since they are clearly different in character from the other parts of the Old Testament (with the possible exception of Lamentations, which was placed together with them in the Hebrew Bible but is placed after Jeremiah in English translations because its authorship is traditionally attributed to the prophet), but they really comprise books of two different major genres: a) Poetry – the Psalms are a collection of poems or songs. b) Wisdom – Job, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes belong within this genre. Having identified these two genres, however, it must be said that the division is not as absolute as it may appear, for a number of reasons: • There is some debate as to which category Song of Songs should be placed in – is it a poetic song or an example of “lyric wisdom” (see the section on Song of Songs for further discussion).

    The Book of Revelation of The Book The Book of Revelation NT338 LESSON 01 of 03 The Background of Revelation Dr. Steve Brown Emeritus Professor of Preaching, Reformed Theological Seminary INTRODUCTION When Jesus died, many of his disciples and admirers believed that he had experienced his final defeat. Some even believed that all his teachings and miracles were for nothing. What his disciples didn’t understand until the third day was that Jesus’ death wasn’t the end of the story. In fact, his resurrection proved that his death was actually his victory. His resurrection allowed his disciples to understand Jesus’ ministry, suffering and death from a completely new perspective. And when John wrote the book of Revelation, his readers needed this new perspective too. The early church faced persecution from the powerful Roman Empire. And many Christians began to view this as a defeat. But John encouraged his readers to find both comfort and confidence in the victory that Jesus achieved at his resurrection. He wanted them to understand that even if their lives ended in martyrdom, that wouldn’t be the end of their story either. Eventually, Jesus would consummate his kingdom, and every believer that had ever lived would share in his victory. This is the first lesson in our series on The Book of Revelation, sometimes called The Apocalypse, or The Apocalypse of John. We’ve entitled this lesson “The Background of Revelation.” In this lesson, we’ll see that Revelation’s context and setting can help us understand its original meaning, and apply its message to our own lives in the modern world.
