Pulp Fiction © Jami Bernard The A List: The National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films, 2002 When Quentin Tarantino traveled for the first time to Amsterdam and Paris, flush with the critical success of “Reservoir Dogs” and still piecing together the quilt of “Pulp Fiction,” he was tickled by the absence of any Quarter Pounders with Cheese on the European culinary scene, a casualty of the metric system. It was just the kind of thing that comes up among friends who are stoned or killing Harvey Keitel (left) and Quentin Tarantino attempt to resolve “The Bonnie Situation.” time. Later, when every nook and cranny Courtesy Library of Congress of “Pulp Fiction” had become quoted and quantified, this minor burger observation entered pop (something a new generation certainly related to through culture with a flourish as part of what fans call the video games, which are similarly structured). Travolta “Tarantinoverse.” gets to stare down Willis (whom he dismisses as “Punchy”), something that could only happen in a movie With its interlocking story structure, looping time frame, directed by an ardent fan of “Welcome Back Kotter.” In and electric jolts, “Pulp Fiction” uses the grammar of film each grouping, the alpha male is soon determined, and to explore the amusement park of the Tarantinoverse, a the scene involves appeasing him. • Oscar-Winning 'Slumdog Millionaire:' a Boost for India's Global Image?
ISAS Brief No. 98 – Date: 27 February 2009 469A Bukit Timah Road #07-01, Tower Block, Singapore 259770 Tel: 6516 6179 / 6516 4239 Fax: 6776 7505 / 6314 5447 Email: [email protected] Website: www.isas.nus.edu.sg Oscar-winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’: A Boost for India’s Global Image? Bibek Debroy∗ Culture is difficult to define. This is more so in a large and heterogeneous country like India, where there is no common language and religion. There are sub-cultures within the country. Joseph Nye’s ‘soft power’ expression draws on a country’s cross-border cultural influences and is one enunciated with the American context in mind. Almost tautologically, soft power implies the existence of a relatively large country and the term is, therefore, now also being used for China and India. In the Indian case, most instances of practice of soft power are linked to language and literature (including Indians writing in English), music, dance, cuisine, fashion, entertainment and even sport, and there is no denying that this kind of cross-border influence has been increasing over time, with some trigger provided by the diaspora. The film and television industry’s influence is no less important. In the last few years, India has produced the largest number of feature films in the world, with 1,164 films produced in 2007. The United States came second with 453, Japan third with 407 and China fourth with 402. Ticket sales are higher for Bollywood than for Hollywood, though revenue figures are much higher for the latter. Indian film production is usually equated with Hindi-language Bollywood, often described as the largest film-producing centre in the world.

The Matrix as an Introduction to Mathematics Abstract In my classes on the nature of scientific thought, I have often used the movie The Matrix (1999) to illustrate how evidence shapes the reality we perceive (or think we perceive). As a mathematician and self-confessed science fiction fan, I usually field questionselated r to the movie whenever the subject of linear algebra arises, since this field is the study of matrices and their properties. So it is natural to ask, why does the movie title reference a mathematical object? Of course, there are many possible explanations for this, each of which probably contributed a little to the naming decision.

Edited by Marcus Leaning & Birgit Pretzsch The Desert of the Real: Christianity, Buddhism & Baudrillard in The Matrix Films and Popular Culture James F. McGrath Abstract The movie The Matrix and its sequels draw explicitly on imagery from a number of sources, including in particular Buddhism, Christianity, and the writings of Jean Baudrillard. A perspective is offered on the perennial philosophical question ‘What is real?’, using language and symbols drawn from three seemingly incompatible world views. In doing so, these movies provide us with an insight into the way popular culture makes eclectic use of various streams of thought to fashion a new reality that is not unrelated to, and yet is nonetheless distinct from, its religious and philosophical undercurrents and underpinnings.

  • (Nhris) and Regional Human Rights Institutions
HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS AS MEDIUM: NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS (NHRIS) AND REGIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS (RHRIS) IN ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS CONTEXT A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of the Science of Law by Buhm Suk Baek August 2011 © 2011 Buhm Suk Baek HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS AS MEDIUM: NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS (NHRIS) AND REGIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS (RHRIS) IN ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS CONTEXT Buhm Suk Baek, J.S.D. Cornell University 2011 The purpose of my dissertation is to examine whether and how national human rights institutions (NHRIs) can be a driving force for the establishment of regional human rights institutions (RHRIs) in the Asia-Pacific region, which remains the only region without such institutions in contrast to Europe, the Americas, and Africa. I first explore the issue of whether RHRIs are desirable in this region, and argue that such a system is desirable. Then I examine the reasons why RHRIs have not emerged in this region. I located these reasons in part by examining the reception of human rights in Asia and issues like the emergence of international human rights law from the Western cultural heritage, and the problematic question of what the Asian way of human rights means. The analysis of the obstacles that have hampered the creation of RHRIs leads me to focus on NHRIs. By reviewing the role that NHRIs can play in addressing the concerns and inhibitions of Asian states, while furthering the aims of international human rights law, I maintain that the way in which NHRIs collaborate demonstrates that they can be eminent actors toward the establishment of RHRIs.
