HOUSTON CHILDREN’S CHARITY • FA L L 2 0 1 6 • 3 ALL DRESSED UP, PREPARED, AND READY TO GO! Each summer the inevitable happens - temperatures rise and students get ready to go back to school. For 8 consecutive years, Rod Ryan, from 94.5 The BuZZ, and Joe Dotterweich, of BullShirts, have lead the way in helping to get our special children “Back2School.” Each year, the duo teams up to raise funds through a radio campaign and sales from their online store to purchase backpacks full of supplies for underprivileged, school-aged children in the Greater Houston Area. Volunteers from Greystar, CIRRO Energy, Humana Medi-Care, Whataburger, Methodist Hospital I-Care, AT&T, Asurion, NCL Wildflowers, Landry’s Inc., PVAMU Student Athletes, and McGuyer Homebuilders, Inc. helped distribute more than 3,380 backpacks on August 13, 2016! Along with backpacks, volunteers handed out over 3,000 books collected for Maddy’s Annual Children’s Book Drive donated by Vanessa Streavel. Along with receiving backpacks and books, Whataburger donated pencil cases and coupons and families collected a dental “goodie bag” donated by Charles E. Dyer, IV. in addition to a backpack and supplies, most students are required to wear a uniform to school. This year, Asurion and Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists donated uniforms to the program. Additional sponsors for the 2016 Back2School program include: 501st Legion, Which Wich?, PrimeWay Federal Credit Union, Whataburger, Schlotzsky’s, Office Depot Foundation, Monster Jam, H&H Tents, and PDQ. We’d like to thank all of our sponsors for their unwavering support. With their help, we’re able to supply thousands of students in our community with the supplies needed to succeed in school.

Mattress Firm hosted the event at their headquarters in Houston, Texas to benefit HCC’s “A Better Night’s Sleep” program. Simmons Bedding Company donated the 500 while Mattress Firm donated the accompanying bed frames, sheet sets, and pillows. Ken Murphy, Mattress Firm President and CEO, said, “Serving the communities where we live and work is a central part of how we do business.
