Under this alternative, the 1989 Tal/ac Historic Site Master Plan directions will be updated to provide current direction forthe historic site including the conversion of the Valhalla boathouse to a small community theatre. Restrooms would be included within the Valhalla boat house. The Valhalla Main House could be used as a support facility for the community theatre. Mitigation measures and monitoring requirements for the implementation of this alternative are found in Chapter II.E & F and Appendix F of the FEIS. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

On the origins of the Gothic novel: From Old Norse to Otranto Martin Arnold A primary vehicle for the literary Gothic in the late eighteenth to early nineteen centuries was past superstition. The extent to which Old Norse tradition provided the basis for a subspecies of literary horror has been passed over in an expanding critical literature which has not otherwise missed out on cosmopolitan perspectives. This observation by Robert W. Rix (2011, 1) accurately assesses what may be considered a significant oversight in studies of the Gothic novel. Whilst it is well known that the ethnic meaning of ‘Gothic’ originally referred to invasive, eastern Germanic, pagan tribes of the third to the sixth centuries AD (see, for example, Sowerby 2000, 15-26), there remains a disconnect between Gothicism as the legacy of Old Norse literature and the use of the term ‘Gothic’ to mean a category of fantastical literature. This essay, then, seeks to complement Rix’s study by, in certain areas, adding more detail about the gradual emergence of Old Norse literature as a significant presence on the European literary scene. The initial focus will be on those formations (often malformations) and interpretations of Old Norse literature as it came gradually to light from the sixteenth century onwards, and how the Nordic Revival impacted on what is widely considered to be the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole (1717-97). -

However, intertextuality is proven to be an obstacle in the adaptation process since adaptation might trigger losses on the meaning of the original works. Addressing this issue, this descriptive qualitative research attempts to reveal (1) the types of intertextuality found from the Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok by Ben Waggoner and its TV-Series Version: Vikings through the characterization of Ragnar Lodbrok,(2) how intertextuality is presented in the Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok by Ben Waggoner and its TV-Series Version: Vikings through the characterization of Ragnar Lodbrok. Intertextuality theory by Fitzsimmons (2013) and characterization theory by Bernardo (2015) were applied to answer these problems. The data of this research were words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and visualizations, considered to reflect the characters of the story. The data were taken from the Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok and Vikings TV series. The data were analyzed by employing Spradley’s componential analysis. Symbolic Interactionism approach was applied in this research to reveal how characters were treated as a symbolic meaning in intertextual domain. Derived from the analysis, this research unveils three types of intertextuality namely optional, obligatory, and accidental. The data shows that optional intertextuality is the most common type of intertextuality found from this research. Characterization of Ragnar was intertextually presented through thirteen manners or types with what others say and physical visualization as the recurring types. -

1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -

Introduction The TV show Vikings restored the popularity of a men, who may have never existedi: Ragnar Lodbrok. Since the middle ages the Danish king was incredibly famous. He and his sons defined the modern perception of Vikings.ii Ragnar was said to be “extremely heroic, utterly murderously and capable of extraordinary deeds.”iii Allegedly he was one of the first men to attack the British Isles.iv The show even portrayed him as the leader of the raid of Lindisfarne in 793. Actually, there is no known reference that Ragnar was involved.v It seems highly unlikely: If Ragnar existed, he led the attack on Paris in 845.vi After the successful raid Ragnar allegedly continued to be active.vii His career would have lasted for more than seventy years. Although this is not completely impossible, it seems improbable. We only know about Ragnar through his Sagas.viii There is no other source mentioning him directly by name. One question inevitably arises: How trustworthy are these Sagas? Waggoner, one of the most recent translators of Ragnar’s Sagas, pointed out multiple parts that are clearly fictional.ix He was not the only scholar to do that. To quote Anders Winroth: “Nothing about him [Ragnar] is ordinary, not even his death, a special kind of execution. -

He was the scientist in charge of product develop- ment and analysis. Purexo was the global leader of food, events and fa- cilities management services. Its morals and ethics had been questioned in the media several times. There had been demonstrations against the company, sometimes bordering on riots. Even some famous people had been arrested during these demonstrations. As for some of the less famous persons arrested – they had never been heard from again. Lothar had long ago learned not to care of his em- ployer’s public image, and did not feel any measure of guilt twisting his heart if he happened to ponder what fate had fallen upon those poor devils. And in any case that was a matter for the security division, not product 5 development. -
